FOR DESORMEAUX, LOSS ISN'T EASE-Y
After receiving well-wishes from Bob Baffert - who was the trainer for Real Quiet - Desormeaux disappeared into the jockeys' clubhouse for nearly an hour. When he emerged, dressed in slick designer shades and - what else? - a brown pinstriped suit, Desormeaux initially balked at making an appearance for the media. As he took a seat next to the left of Da' Tara's owner, Robert LaPenta, Desormeaux said he was \"numb\" and \"a little lost.\" \"When I got to the outside, going into the first turn, I said, 'That's it, the race is over, I got it,' \" Desormeaux said. \"There's no popped tires,\" the jockey went on. \"He's just out of gas. I'll be quite proud knowing I'm not going to finish in the money, and this horse was in no way, shape or form lame or sore. But there's something amiss.
Redemption, brotherhood among key storylines to watch during Kentucky Derby
Pace makes the race: With 20 horses, you can usually count on the Kentucky Derby to have a blazing pace on the front end, which favors the horses that can sit back and wait for the leaders to get tired. This year, however, more of the top contenders prefer to come from behind, which means the first half-mile may be reasonable and make it that much tougher to catch the frontrunners. It seems almost certain Danzing Candy, who drew the 20 hole, will be sent to the lead so he can save ground going into the first turn. The question is whether jockey Mike Smith will have to use too much horse and whether he can slow the pace down from there. \"I would think from 20 he's going to have to commit a little bit, maybe even more so than from an inside post,\" said Todd Pletcher, who trains two horses in Destin and Outwork that figure to sit just behind Danzing Candy. \"He looks to be the speed of the race and I imagine they'll try to come out of there running.\" Benson squared: Tom Benson, the 88-year-old owner of the New Orleans Saints, just recently got into the horse racing game with his wife Gayle and formed GMB Racing Stables. Remarkably, the first group of yearlings they purchased in 2014 produced two Kentucky Derby starters in Mo Tom and Tom's Ready. \"My first time doing it, so might as well enjoy it,\" Benson said. Both horses are pretty significant longshots but could have a chance under the right scenario. Mo Tom finished fourth in his last start in the Louisiana Derby but encountered severe traffic trouble in the stretch, forcing his jockey to check to avoid a collision. Tom's Ready has just one win in nine starts, but his trainer, Dallas Stewart, has a knack for getting horses to hit the board at big odds in these kinds of races. Horses trained by Stewart finished second in the 2013 and 2014 Derbys.
