Detection of Earthquake-Induced Landslides during the 2018 Kumamoto Earthquake Using Multitemporal Airborne Lidar Data
A series of earthquakes hit Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, continuously over a period of two days in April 2016. The earthquakes caused many landslides and numerous surface ruptures. In this study, two sets of the pre- and post-event airborne Lidar data were applied to detect landslides along the Futagawa fault. First, the horizontal displacements caused by the crustal displacements were removed by a subpixel registration. Then, the vertical displacements were calculated by averaging the vertical differences in 100-m grids. The erosions and depositions in the corrected vertical differences were extracted using the thresholding method. Slope information was applied to remove the vertical differences caused by collapsed buildings. Then, the linked depositions were identified from the erosions according to the aspect information. Finally, the erosion and its linked deposition were identified as a landslide. The results were verified using truth data from field surveys and image interpretation. Both the pair of digital surface models acquired over a short period and the pair of digital terrain models acquired over a 10-year period showed good potential for detecting 70% of landslides.
Three-Dimensional Modeling of Weed Plants Using Low-Cost Photogrammetry
Sensing advances in plant phenotyping are of vital importance in basic and applied plant research. Plant phenotyping enables the modeling of complex shapes, which is useful, for example, in decision-making for agronomic management. In this sense, 3D processing algorithms for plant modeling is expanding rapidly with the emergence of new sensors and techniques designed to morphologically characterize. However, there are still some technical aspects to be improved, such as an accurate reconstruction of end-details. This study adapted low-cost techniques, Structure from Motion (SfM) and MultiView Stereo (MVS), to create 3D models for reconstructing plants of three weed species with contrasting shape and plant structures. Plant reconstruction was developed by applying SfM algorithms to an input set of digital images acquired sequentially following a track that was concentric and equidistant with respect to the plant axis and using three different angles, from a perpendicular to top view, which guaranteed the necessary overlap between images to obtain high precision 3D models. With this information, a dense point cloud was created using MVS, from which a 3D polygon mesh representing every plants’ shape and geometry was generated. These 3D models were validated with ground truth values (e.g., plant height, leaf area (LA) and plant dry biomass) using regression methods. The results showed, in general, a good consistency in the correlation equations between the estimated values in the models and the actual values measured in the weed plants. Indeed, 3D modeling using SfM algorithms proved to be a valuable methodology for weed phenotyping, since it accurately estimated the actual values of plant height and LA. Additionally, image processing using the SfM method was relatively fast. Consequently, our results indicate the potential of this budget system for plant reconstruction at high detail, which may be usable in several scenarios, including outdoor conditions. Future research should address other issues, such as the time-cost relationship and the need for detail in the different approaches.
Spatio-Temporal Estimation of Biomass Growth in Rice Using Canopy Surface Model from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Images
The awareness of spatial and temporal variations in site-specific crop parameters, such as aboveground biomass (total dry weight: (TDW), plant length (PL) and leaf area index (LAI), help in formulating appropriate management decisions. However, conventional monitoring methods rely on time-consuming manual field operations. In this study, the feasibility of using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based remote sensing approach for monitoring growth in rice was evaluated using a digital surface model (DSM). Approximately 160 images of paddy fields were captured during each UAV survey campaign over two vegetation seasons. The canopy surface model (CSM) was developed based on the differences observed between each DSM and the first DSM after transplanting. Mean canopy height (CH) was used as a variable for the estimation models of LAI and TDW. The mean CSM of the mesh covering several hills was sufficient to explain the PL (R2 = 0.947). TDW and LAI prediction accuracy of the model were high (relative RMSE of 20.8% and 28.7%, and RMSE of 0.76 m2 m−2 and 141.4 g m−2, respectively) in the rice varieties studied (R2 = 0.937 (Basmati370), 0.837 (Nipponbare and IR64) for TDW, and 0.894 (Basmati370), 0.866 (Nipponbare and IR64) for LAI). The results of this study support the assertion of the benefits of DSM-derived CH for predicting biomass development. In addition, LAI and TDW could be estimated temporally and spatially using the UAV-based CSM, which is not easily affected by weather conditions.
GIS-Based Distribution System Planning for New PV Installations
Solar panel installations have increased significantly in Japan in recent decades. Due to this, world trends, such as clean/renewable energy, are being implemented in power systems all across Japan—particularly installations of photovoltaic (PV) panels in general households. In this work, solar power was estimated using solar radiation data from geographic information system (GIS) technology. The solar power estimation was applied to the actual distribution system model of the Jono area in Kitakyushu city, Japan. In this work, real power consumption data was applied to a real world distribution system model. We studied the impact of high installation rates of solar panels in Japanese residential areas. Additionally, we considered the voltage fluctuations in the distribution system model by assessing the impact of cloud shadows using a novel cloud movement simulation algorithm that uses real world GIS data. The simulation results revealed that the shadow from the cloud movement process directly impacted the solar power generation in residential areas, which caused voltage fluctuations of the overall distribution system. Thus, we advocate distribution system planning with a large number of solar panels.
The Application of Airborne Lidar Data in the Modelling of 3D Urban Landscape Ecology
Compared with traditional remote sensing technologies, airborne Lidar data can provide researchers with additional 3D positional information, which is a key factor for advanced urban research, and particularly that of urban landscape ecology. Therefore, the need for applying Lidar data to a variety of disciplines is rapidly growing. However, the lack of remote sensing background makes the wider use of Lidar data highly difficult for scholars from other disciplines. In contrast to the majority of Lidar-related books that focus on sophisticated principles and general applications of Lidar data, this book provides the reader with a feasible framework for applying airborne Lidar data to urban research. In addition to providing a general introduction to the subject, this book explains in detail a series of case studies to demonstrate how these theoretical models can be employed to address practical urban issues. As such, this book not only provides Lidar scholars with a series of specifically designed research methods, but will also serve to inspire scholars from other disciplines, such as geographers, urban planners, ecologists, and decision-makers, with a complete framework of potential application fields.
Estimating tree height and biomass of a poplar plantation with image-based UAV technology
Poplar is considered one of the forest crops with greatest potential for lignocellulose production, so rapid and non-destructive measurements of tree growth (in terms of height and biomass) is essential to estimate productivity of poplar plantations. As an alternative to tedious and costly manual sampling of poplar trees, this study evaluated the ability of UAV technology to monitor a one-year-old poplar plantation (with trees 4.3 meters high, on average), and specifically, to assess tree height and estimate dry biomass from spectral information (based on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI) and Digital Surface Models (DSM). We used an UAV flying at 100 m altitude over an experimental poplar plantation of 95 × 60 m2 (3350 trees approx.), and collected remote sensing images with a conventional visible-light camera for the generation of the DSM and a multi-spectral camera for the calculation of NDVI. Prior to the DSM generation, several adjustments of image enhancement were tested, which improved DSM accuracy by 19–21%. Next, UAV-based data (i.e., tree height, NDVI, and the result of fusing these variables) were evaluated with a validation set of 48 tree-rows by applying correlation and linear regression analysis. Correlation between actual and DSM-based tree heights was acceptable (R2 = 0.599 and RMSE = 0.21 cm), although DSM did not detect the narrow apexes in the top of the poplar trees (1 m length, on average), which led to notable underestimates. Linear regression equations for tree dry biomass showed the highest correlation with NDVI × Tree-height (R2 = 0.540 and RMSE = 0.23 kg/m2) and the lowest correlation with NDVI (R2 = 0.247 and RMSE = 0.29 kg/m2). The best results were used to determine the distribution of the trees according to their dry biomass, providing information about potential productivity of the entire poplar plantation by applying a fast and non-destructive procedure.
Applicability of Data Acquisition Characteristics to the Identification of Local Artefacts in Global Digital Elevation Models: Comparison of the Copernicus and TanDEM-X DEMs
Several global digital elevation models (DEMs) have been developed in the last two decades. The most recent addition to the family of global DEMs is the TanDEM-X DEM. The original version of the TanDEM-X DEM is, however, a nonedited product (i.e., it contains local artefacts such as voids, spikes, and holes). Therefore, subsequent identification of local artefacts and their editing is necessary. In this study, we evaluated the accuracy of the original TanDEM-X DEM and its improved edited version, the Copernicus DEM, in three major European mountain ranges (the Alps, the Carpathians, and the Pyrenees) using a digital surface model derived from airborne laser scanning data as a reference. In addition, to evaluate the applicability of data acquisition characteristics (coverage map, consistency mask, and height error map) and terrain characteristics (slope, aspect, altitude) to the localization of problematic sites, we modeled their associations with the TanDEM-X DEM error. We revealed local occurrences of large errors in the TanDEM-X DEM that were typically found on steep ridges or in canyons, which were largely corrected in the Copernicus DEM. The editing procedure used for the Copernicus DEM construction was evidently successful as the RMSE for the TanDEM-X and Copernicus DEMs at the 90 m resolution improved from 45 m to 12 m, from 16 m to 6 m, and from 24 m to 9 m for the Alps, the Pyrenees, and the Carpathians, respectively. The Copernicus DEM at the 30 m resolution performed similarly well. The boosted regression trees showed that acquisition characteristics provided as auxiliary data are useful for locating problematic sites and explained 28–50% of deviance of the absolute vertical error. The absolute vertical error was strongly related to the height error map. Finally, up to 26% of cells in the Copernicus DEM were filled using DEMs from different time periods and, hence, users performing multitemporal analysis or requiring data from a specific time period in the mountain environment should be wary when using TanDEM-X and its derivations. We suggest that when filling problematic sites using alternative DEMs, more attention should be paid to the period of their collection to minimize the temporal displacement in the final products.
Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) for High-Resolution Reconstruction of Topography: The Structure from Motion Approach on Coastal Environments
The availability of high-resolution Digital Surface Models of coastal environments is of increasing interest for scientists involved in the study of the coastal system processes. Among the range of terrestrial and aerial methods available to produce such a dataset, this study tests the utility of the Structure from Motion (SfM) approach to low-altitude aerial imageries collected by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The SfM image-based approach was selected whilst searching for a rapid, inexpensive, and highly automated method, able to produce 3D information from unstructured aerial images. In particular, it was used to generate a dense point cloud and successively a high-resolution Digital Surface Models (DSM) of a beach dune system in Marina di Ravenna (Italy). The quality of the elevation dataset produced by the UAV-SfM was initially evaluated by comparison with point cloud generated by a Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) surveys. Such a comparison served to highlight an average difference in the vertical values of 0.05 m (RMS = 0.19 m). However, although the points cloud comparison is the best approach to investigate the absolute or relative correspondence between UAV and TLS methods, the assessment of geomorphic features is usually based on multi-temporal surfaces analysis, where an interpolation process is required. DSMs were therefore generated from UAV and TLS points clouds and vertical absolute accuracies assessed by comparison with a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) survey. The vertical comparison of UAV and TLS DSMs with respect to GNSS measurements pointed out an average distance at cm-level (RMS = 0.011 m). The successive point by point direct comparison between UAV and TLS elevations show a very small average distance, 0.015 m, with RMS = 0.220 m. Larger values are encountered in areas where sudden changes in topography are present. The UAV-based approach was demonstrated to be a straightforward one and accuracy of the vertical dataset was comparable with results obtained by TLS technology.
An Automatic Random Forest-OBIA Algorithm for Early Weed Mapping between and within Crop Rows Using UAV Imagery
Accurate and timely detection of weeds between and within crop rows in the early growth stage is considered one of the main challenges in site-specific weed management (SSWM). In this context, a robust and innovative automatic object-based image analysis (OBIA) algorithm was developed on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) images to design early post-emergence prescription maps. This novel algorithm makes the major contribution. The OBIA algorithm combined Digital Surface Models (DSMs), orthomosaics and machine learning techniques (Random Forest, RF). OBIA-based plant heights were accurately estimated and used as a feature in the automatic sample selection by the RF classifier; this was the second research contribution. RF randomly selected a class balanced training set, obtained the optimum features values and classified the image, requiring no manual training, making this procedure time-efficient and more accurate, since it removes errors due to a subjective manual task. The ability to discriminate weeds was significantly affected by the imagery spatial resolution and weed density, making the use of higher spatial resolution images more suitable. Finally, prescription maps for in-season post-emergence SSWM were created based on the weed maps—the third research contribution—which could help farmers in decision-making to optimize crop management by rationalization of the herbicide application. The short time involved in the process (image capture and analysis) would allow timely weed control during critical periods, crucial for preventing yield loss.
Simplification of three-dimensional urban buildings in Digital Surface Model
Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are extensively utilized for terrain analysis, representation, and visualization. Various application scenarios require DEMs at different Level of Details (LODs). Although traditional multi-scale landform expression methods primarily target DEMs at small scales, the simplifying Digital Surface Models (DSMs) for urban modeling at large scales remains a significant challenge. By integrating map generalization theory with computer vision techniques, we developed a novel method for urban building simplification in DSMs, termed Building Simplification in Digital Surface Models (BS-DSM). First, the buildings extracted from the DSMs are subjected to morphological analysis and aligned to a specific orientation. Next, the DSMs are divided into rectangular pixel blocks through energy-driven sampling, followed by horizontal simplification of building shapes in a 2D projection plane according to the geometric characteristics of these pixel blocks. Finally, to preserve the average height and total volume of the simplified 3D buildings in the vertical direction, the building heights across different pixel blocks are adjusted and interpolated based on the skeleton lines of building roofs and calculations of adjacent height values. The proposed BS-DSM method was evaluated using the publicly available Vaihingen DSM dataset. The result shows that the BS-DSM method performs better in simplifying building shape and height while meeting basic multi-scale expression constraints compared with traditional filtering methods.
