Radio Personality Lubna Al Turki Brings Hope To Loyal Listeners in Palestine
In the city of Hebron, Palestine, the door of a well-lit, air-conditioned meeting room opens and Lubna Al Turki strides in. Usually this wouldn't be an action worth mentioning. However, in this ultra-conservative city it is rare to find a female who shakes the hand of a man who isn't a relative, demonstrating a level of confidence and authority not found in most Hebron women. A warm smile and an apology for being late; one of her radio programs was due to go on air soon. A well-known radio personality, TV presenter and journalist, Al Turki takes a seat and tells us she will do her best to answer all our questions. She began her career in 2009 as a TV presenter, and after a few years she decided she wanted a new challenge.
Musikalische DIY-Praktiken des Sekundären und Professionalität der Beiläufigkeit: DJs und Producer im Bereich House/Techno
House and techno are in Germany to established genres of electronic popular music, which are still present in a translocal scenes after a youth culture boom in the 1990s, but also in the charts as part of Electronic Dance Music (EDM). In the following, a music ethno-based approach will be used to investigate to what extent and in what forms the criterion of professionalism also appears significant in the subculturally oriented house and techno scene. For this purpose, expert interviews with protagonists from Cologne, Berlin and Frankfurt were evaluated, who make their living entirely or mostly through their appearances as DJs or live artists, their own music productions, record labels or party events and initially predominantly in this purely economic Meaning as professional actors. In the context of this exploratory study the questions of which musical, technical and other competences were necessary to obtain their respective status, the ways in which they were acquired and how they are used during concrete situations should be investigated, above all based on the statements of these DJs and producers as applied in the club or music production. In addition, it seems interesting to outline how the actors define themselves in their initially central role as DJs and to what extent their subculturally oriented practices, motivations and attitudes lead to delimitations within the respective genres and towards pop culture and society 'mainstream' In this context, aspects of the random, the spontaneous, or the casual and unplanned achievements that have been emphasized partly in the context of music production, but above all also with regard to successful publications and career progression in many interviews, have to be considered.
Vintage Radio: a Media Trust Community Voices project
Purpose - In 2010, Vintage Radio, a community radio station in Birkenhead set up and run entirely by older people for older people, received funding from communications charity Media Trust as part of the Community Voices scheme - a nationwide campaign that aims to support disadvantaged and isolated communities to get their stories told. The purpose of this paper is to record and document the creation and development of Vintage Radio and its outcomes to date. The paper seeks to outline the importance of inspiring, engaging, and supporting older communities to get their voices heard through digital media.Design methodology approach - Data were gathered via interviews with listeners, members, and volunteers from Vintage Radio via phone and e-mail to find out about their involvement with the station and what it means to them. Quotes were recorded and included in this paper. Information was also gathered from the Vintage Radio web site.Findings - The findings demonstrate that Vintage Radio has made a significant difference to the local community in a number of ways. A greater number of older volunteers have learned new digital and technical skills and this has improved the quality of the station's programming. Participants have forged new friendships and enabled other older people to overcome the sense of invisibility they sometimes suffer from. The radio station has reached out to those in care homes giving isolated and lonely residents a sense of belonging.Research limitations implications - Owing to geographical distance, face-to-face interviews are not possible.Originality value - This paper demonstrates how important it is to inspire, engage, and support older communities to get their voices heard through digital media and aims to encourage further similar activity in the UK.
