IDENTIFICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF THE FOYER OF THE NATIONAL THEATER OF COSTA RICA AS PART OF THE METHODOLOGICAL STRATEGY FOR THE THREE-DIMENSIONAL MODELING OF THE FUTURE DIGITAL TWIN
This paper summarizes the first results of the third specific objective of the research project: Digital Twin (DT) as a management tool for the programmed conservation plan (PCP), case study: Foyer and Smokers of the National Theater of Costa Rica (TNCR, by its Spanish acronym), developed with the support of the Vice Rectory of Research and Extension of the Technological Institute of Costa Rica. This objective aims to integrate graphic, non-graphic and linked information from the diagnostic stages of the PCP, through three-dimensional modeling, for the definition of conservation actions and future visualization of the DT. However, prior to modeling it was necessary to understand the composition of the structural system of the first body of the TNCR.The project has the information of the building systematized in documents and plans, both original and from subsequent studies and interventions, as well as a three-dimensional model made in 2021. However, there is no \"as built\" information after the construction or the interventions that have been carried out; in addition, the structural information of foundations, mezzanines and roofs is not integrated with the ornamental and pictorial information; that is, prior to this research there was no precise documentation of the structural elements that make up the study area and that support the heritage with artistic value of the building. Therefore, this paper presents the work carried out between June 2022 and March 2023 to identify and characterize the components of the Foyer and Smokers of the TNCR, using non-invasive techniques.
What enabled the production of mathematical knowledge in complex analysis?
With the objective of identifying intrinsic forms of mathematical production in complex analysis (CA), this study presents an analysis of the mathematical activity of five original works that contributed to the development of Cauchy’s integral theorem. The analysis of the mathematical activity was carried out through the identification of the types of expressions used and the way they were used by the historical subjects when communicating their results, to subsequently identify transversal elements of knowledge production. The analysis was refined by the notion of confrontation, which depicts the development of mathematical knowledge through the idea of building knowledge against previous knowledge. As a result of the study we established epistemological hypothesis, which are conceived as conjectures that reveal ways in which mathematical knowledge was generated in CA.
OnlineLino—A Website on Architect Raul Lino’s Built Heritage at Médio Tejo, in Portugal
The cultural context and values of twentieth-century architecture and construction confirm the need to preserve them for future generations, given the multiple challenges to overcome. Raul Lino da Silva (1879–1974) is a celebrated Portuguese architect who worked throughout the twentieth century and whose architectural legacy is scattered from the north to the south of the country. The aim of this paper is to present the development of the website OnlineLino, which is related to the architectural and construction heritage of Raul Lino in the Médio Tejo region, an inland Portuguese territory with low demographic density. This work is focused on integrating documentary information dispersed across different digital funds, by aggregating it on a website that will be made available for public access in the future. To this end, data were collected from different funds, and the information was aggregated and systematised so that it could be included in the digital database developed, the OnlineLino website. The work was carried out by a multidisciplinary team in an academic setting, involving the areas of architecture, civil engineering, computer engineering and design. We hope that this website will contribute to the dissemination of Raul Lino’s architectural legacy, especially for buildings that are less studied and known.
Italian Universities’ actions targeting refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants: an initial mapping
The paper presents the first results of a documentary research aimed at mapping specific actions or programmes addressed to holders of international protection, asylum seekers and migrants carried out by public and private universities, in Italy. The research reached a total of 98 universities, using the universities’ official websites as primary sources. From the data it emerges that universities are implementing both integration projects within the university education framework and projects of hosting, as well as social and cultural inclusion projects. The mapping pointed out a diverse and complex framework of interventions, together with potentialities and paths that universities could follow to develop or activate new services in terms of social responsibility as well as of research to better understand migratory phenomena.
Compatibility of the CSR practices of Islamic banks with the United Nations SDGs amidst COVID-19: a documentary evidence
PurposeThis study aims to establish whether the corporate social responsibilities (CSR) practices of Islamic banks are compatible with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.Design/methodology/approachA documentary research method was applied by examining the annual reports of selected Islamic banks from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, the UAE and Malaysia for 2020, which coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic.FindingsThe results indicate that Islamic banks discharged various CSR activities and contributed huge funds toward achieving the SDGs of the United Nations. Specifically, the banks prioritized the following CSR sectors: education, health, environmental protection and disaster relief and management. Besides, they provided support to micro and small businesses toward poverty alleviation.Research limitations/implicationsThis study examined only CSR reports of the selected Islamic banks for 2020.Practical implicationsThe findings have practical implications that may enable Islamic banks across the globe to improve their CSR initiatives, activities and reporting toward realizing the SDGs. They are also helpful to policymakers and regulators for the provisions of policies and regulations to motivate or mandate Islamic banks to effectively improve their CSR practices.Social implicationsCSR practices of Islamic banks can significantly support the SDGs toward mitigating many economic and social problems.Originality/valueThis study applied a relevant but rarely used method to explore the role of CSR practices of Islamic banks in achieving the SDGs.
Muhājirūn as a Name for the First/Seventh Century Muslims
It is by now commonly known that the early followers of the Prophet Muhammad were not primarily titled Muslims, muslimun. Rather, the documentary Arabic evidence shows that they called themselves \"Believers,\" mu'minun. It must be admitted that there are some Qur'anic passages where muslimun and isitem seem to be employed as technical terms. Outside the Quran, the word Islam, as a name of the religion, appears for the first time on the tombstone of a woman named 'Abbasa dated 71 AH/691 CE. Here, Lindstedt shows that the word muhajirun was used sometimes, albeit rarely, in the Arabic literary evidence as an appellation for the first-second/seventh-eighth century Muslims.
‘The televising of science is a process of television’: establishing Horizon, 1962–1967
BBC Television's Horizon series, fifty years old on 2 May 2014, despite its significance to the history of the public culture of science, has been little studied. This microhistorical account follows the gestation and early years of the programme, demonstrating how it established a social and cultural account of science. This was a result of televisual factors, notably the determination to follow the format of the successful arts television programme Monitor. It illuminates how the processes of television production, with a handful of key participants – Aubrey Singer, Gerald Leach, Philip Daly, Gordon Rattray Taylor, Ramsay Short, Michael Peacock and Robert Reid – established the format of the programme. This occurred over seventeen months of prior preparation followed by three troubled years of seeking to establish a stable form. This was finally achieved in 1967 when the programme adopted a film documentary approach after extended attempts at making it as a studio-based magazine programme. The story has implications for understanding the social accounts of science that were circulating in the key decade of the 1960s.
Representing Absences in the Postdictatorial Documentary Cinema of Patricio Guzmán
For nearly 40 years, Patricio Guzmán has explored the complex relationships between time, memory, and absence in postdictatorial Chile while infusing his documentaries with personal narrative and devices more commonly seen in literary fiction. His films have redefined the genre from the advent of the New Latin American Cinema through the 2010s and are characterized by marked subjectivity and the representation of absence in the postdictatorial context. His filmmaking, beginning in the early 1970s and ending with his latest film, Nostalgia de la luz (2010), constitutes the most complete attempt in any medium to document Chilean national life before, during, and after the Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990).
