Symbols of leadership and conceptions of power in Hausa Literature: An intertextual reading of a Dodo folktale and a popular song
This article presents a brief exploration of the interface between the collective or ancestral archetype of the “Dodo”, symbolising destructive power in Hausa tales and the more individual interpretation and stylistic concerns of a contemporary popular singer, Ali Na Maliki, addressing, at another level, the subject of power and leadership portrayed by the traditional chief. The paper will focus on the interaction between genres, seen in the light of intertextuality as defined by Michael Riffaterre and M.H. Abrams among others. It highlights, moreover, the thematic and aesthetic contribution of the oral artist Ali Na Maliki to contemporary Hausa orature and culture. It reposes on an analysis of the manipulation of certain images and animal symbols of leadership and power borrowed from the world of tales used with a certain degree of innovation in order to evoke, symbolically, the mythical attributes of power in the artistic universe of his songs.

The New Caucus-Race: Methodological Considerations for Meta-Analyses of Psychotherapy Outcome
2018
The Dodo Bird Verdict (DBV)-the proposition that all psychotherapies are equally effective-remains bitterly contested by researchers, who have mainly used meta-analyses as the primary tool to adjudicate the disagreements about relative psychotherapy efficacy. However, the meta-analytic literature remains inconclusive and contradictory, due in part to heterogeneity in researchers' methodological and statistical decisions. We undertake a review of a number of recent meta-analyses of psychotherapy outcomes to highlight key methodological issues in the DBV meta-analytic literature. Issues under consideration include the inclusion of direct versus indirect comparisons; the restriction of analyses to bona fide rather than intent-to-fail treatments; the outcomes to be included and distinguished in the analysis (e.g., primary and secondary outcomes, outcomes at termination and at follow-up, intent-to-treat and completer analyses); methods for effect size aggregation; the question of what constitutes a clinically significant effect size; search strategies for locating primary studies; statistical considerations; and possible moderators for use in metaregression analysis, including treatment class, disorder, allegiance, and methodological quality. We conclude with recommendations for ensuring that meta-analytic assessments of the DBV are both accurate and even-handed.
Public Significance Statement
To reduce the burden of mental health difficulties and maximize clients' well-being, it is critical to be able to determine which, if any, psychotherapies should be considered first-line treatment options. Meta-analyses undertaken with consistent and accurate methodologies will be key to making such determinations.

Developing Device of Death Operation (DODO) to Detect Apoptosis in 2D and 3D Cultures
2024
The real-time detection of intracellular biological processes by encoded sensors has broad application prospects. Here, we developed a degron-based modular reporting system, the Device of Death Operation (DODO), that can monitor various biological processes. The DODO system consists of a “reporter”, an “inductor”, and a “degron”. After zymogen activation and cleavage, the degron will be released from the “reporter”, which eventually leads to the stabilization of the “reporter”, and can be detected. By replacing different “inductors” and “reporters”, a series of biological processes can be reported through various signals. The system can effectively report the existence of TEV protease. To prove this concept, we successfully applied the DODO system to report apoptosis in 2D and 3D cultures. In addition, the reporter based on degron will help to design protease reporters other than caspase.

Effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural, person-centred, and psychodynamic therapies in UK primary-care routine practice: replication in a larger sample
2008
Psychotherapy's equivalence paradox is that treatments tend to have equivalently positive outcomes despite non-equivalent theories and techniques. We replicated an earlier comparison of treatment approaches in a sample four times larger and restricted to primary-care mental health.
Patients (n=5613) who received cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), person-centred therapy (PCT) or psychodynamic therapy (PDT) at one of 32 NHS primary-care services during a 3-year period (2002-2005) completed the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation - Outcome Measure (CORE-OM) at the beginning and end of treatment. Therapists indicated which approaches were used on an End of Therapy form. We compared outcomes of groups treated with CBT (n=1045), PCT (n=1709), or PDT (n=261) only or with one of these plus one additional approach (e.g. integrative, supportive, art), designated CBT+1 (n=1035), PCT+1 (n=1033), or PDT+1 (n=530), respectively.
All six groups began treatment with equivalent CORE-OM scores, and all averaged marked improvement (overall pre/post effect size=1.39). Neither treatment approach nor degree of purity ('only' v. '+1') had a statistically significant effect. Distributions of change scores were all similar.
Replicating the earlier results, the theoretically different approaches tended to have equivalent outcomes. Caution is warranted because of limited treatment specification, non-random assignment, incomplete data, and other issues. Insofar as these routine treatments appear effective for patients who complete them, those who fail to complete (or to begin) treatment deserve attention by researchers and policymakers.

2017
Fire was rare on Mauritius prior to human arrival (AD 1598); subsequently three phases of elevated fire activity occurred: ca 1630–1747, 1787–1833, and 1950–modern. Elevated fire frequency coincided with periods of high human impact evidenced from the historical record, and is linked to the extinction of island endemics.
