2018
\"Closely examine website scraping and data processing: the technique of extracting data from websites in a format suitable for further analysis. You'll review which tools to use, and compare their features and efficiency. Focusing on BeautifulSoup4 and Scrapy, this concise, focused book highlights common problems and suggests solutions that readers can implement on their own. Website Scraping with Python starts by introducing and installing the scraping tools and explaining the features of the full application that readers will build throughout the book. You'll see how to use BeautifulSoup4 and Scrapy individually or together to achieve the desired results. Because many sites use JavaScript, you'll also employ Selenium with a browser emulator to render these sites and make them ready for scraping. By the end of this book, you'll have a complete scraping application to use and rewrite to suit your needs. As a bonus, the author shows you options of how to deploy your spiders into the Cloud to leverage your computer from long-running scraping tasks\"--Back cover.

Creating the Ethical Academy

2011,2010
For those who believe in the promise of higher education to shape a better future, this may be a time of unprecedented despair. Stories of students regularly cheating in their classes, admissions officers bending the rules for VIPs, faculty fudging research data, and presidents plagiarizing seem more rampant than ever before. If those associated with our institutions of higher learning cannot resist ethical corruption, what hope do we have for an ethical society?
In this edited volume, higher education experts and scholars tackle the challenge of understanding why ethical misconduct occurs in the academy and how we can address it. The volume editor and contributing authors use a systems framework to analyze ethical challenges in common functional areas (e.g., testing and admissions, teaching and learning, research, fundraising, spectator sports, and governance), highlighting that misconduct is shaped by both individuals and the contexts in which they work, study, and live. The volume argues compellingly for colleges and universities to make ethics a strategic, institutional priority. Higher education researchers, students, and practitioners will find this volume and its application of empirical research, real-life examples, and illustrative case studies to be an inspiring and applicable read.
Dr. Tricia Bertram Gallant is the academic integrity coordinator for the University of California, San Diego.
\"This edited book provides an excellent summary of the complexity of academic corruption and offers a wide-ranging list of recommendations for teachers, students, and administrators.\" — The Journal of Higher Education
\"Bertram Gallant offers a long overdue break from the many texts on student plagiarism and moral corruption, by examining academic integrity using a systems approach...[A] sophisticated understanding of the academic integrity agenda coupled with an impassioned plea for ethics to become an “intentional strategic priority for higher education” makes Creating the Ethical Academy essential reading for anyone interested in reinvigorating higher education.\"-- International Journal for Educational Integrity
\"Something is rotten in academe. There is, as Tricia Bertram Gallant and Lester F. Goodchild point out in the introduction to this disturbing, yet valuable, collection of essays, a \"continuing academic ethics crisis\" … Tricia Bertram Gallant and her contributors have done the rest of us a favor by offering a useable intellectual framework for understanding the ethical dilemmas facing higher education today.\" —Teachers College Record

Modeling & simulation-based data engineering : introducing pragmatics into ontologies for net-centric information exchange

2007
Data Engineering has become a necessary and critical activity for business, engineering, and scientific organizations as the move to service oriented architecture and web services moves into full swing. Notably, the US Department of Defense is mandating that all of its agencies and contractors assume a defining presence on the Net-centric Global Information Grid. This book provides the first practical approach to data engineering and modeling, which supports interoperabililty with consumers of the data in a service- oriented architectures (SOAs). Although XML (eXtensible Modeling Language) is the lingua franca for such interoperability, it is not sufficient on its own. The approach in this book addresses critical objectives such as creating a single representation for multiple applications, designing models capable of supporting dynamic processes, and harmonizing legacy data models for web-based co-existence. The approach is based on the System Entity Structure (SES) which is a well-defined structure, methodology, and practical tool with all of the functionality of UML (Unified Modeling Language) and few of the drawbacks. The SES originated in the formal representation of hierarchical simulation models. So it provides an axiomatic formalism that enables automating the development of XML dtds and schemas, composition and decomposition of large data models, and analysis of commonality among structures.Zeigler and Hammond include a range of features to benefit their readers. Natural language, graphical and XML forms of SES specification are employed to allow mapping of legacy meta-data. Real world examples and case studies provide insight into data engineering and test evaluation in various application domains. Comparative information is provided on concepts of ontologies, modeling and simulation, introductory linguistic background, and support options enable programmers to work with advanced tools in the area. The website of the Arizona Center for Integrative Modeling and Simulation, co-founded by Zeigler in 2001, provides links to downloadable software to accompany the book. * The only practical guide to integrating XML and web services in data engineering* Introduces linguistic levels of interoperability for effective information exchange* Covers the interoperability standards mandated by national and international agencies * Complements Zeigler's classic THEORY OF MODELING AND SIMULATION

Differences of Pareto principle performance in e-resource download distribution
2016
Explores whether the databases from a certain library are compliant or not with the Pareto principle - which states that, for many events, roughly 80 per cent of the effects come from 20 per cent of the causes - and, if so, to what extent the Pareto principle performance is evident among these databases. Determines the differences in Pareto principle performance according to time change and database type. Focuses on full-text downloads from six e-resources – Elsevier ScienceDirect (SD), Wiley Blackwell, Springer Journal, EBSCO Business Source Premier (BSP), American Chemical Society and American Institute of Physics (AIP) – for the period 2007-2013.
