Bermudan government pledges to end regiment conscription
HAMILTON, Bermuda, Jul 12, CMC -- Premier Michael Dunkley says legislation to end conscription to the Bermuda Regiment will be brought to the House of Assembly during its next session, paving the way for the defence unit to become an all-volunteer force. Dunkley told the House of Assembly on Friday said that while the transition would take more than \"a stroke of a pen\", a considerable amount of planning to halt the practice of conscription had been undertaken over the past two months. \"The move to an all-volunteer force will not be without its challenges and the means by which the government proposes to mitigate those challenges is through a phased end to conscription working towards the last ballot for recruits in 2015 for 2016's recruit camp and a completion of service for those soldiers in 2019,\" Dunkley said.
Bermudan government announces cash for guns scheme
HAMILTON, Bermuda, Apr 13, CMC -- Public Safety Minister Michael Dunkley has announced that a cash for guns scheme is to be introduced next month in a fresh attack on violent crime in Bermuda. \"Let me re-emphasise that Bermuda has a zero tolerance for illegal firearms and that policy remains unchanged. Together we can make Bermuda safer again and together we will make Bermuda safer again,\" Dunkley told a news conference. New Crime Stoppers chairman Raphael Simons, a former police officer who now heads up the security and fraud unit at the island's largest bank, HSBC, said Crime Stoppers was happy to cooperate with police.
Bermudan opposition deputy leader tops opinion poll
The poll also showed the ruling Progressive Labour Party (PLP) still trailing the main opposition party, the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA). Forty-one per cent of registered voters reported that they had a favourable impression of [Michael Dunkley], a dairy owner who is deputy leader of the six-month-old OBA. The UBP won 14 seats at the last election in 2007.The poll found that 79 per cent of registered voters were likely to vote in the next general election. Forty-one per cent of registered voters reported that they were likely to vote for the OBA, compared to 35 per cent for the PLP. Those numbers represent an improvement for both parties since September when just 33 per cent said they would vote for the ruling party and 38 per cent for the OBA. Just one per cent said they would vote for the UBP.

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC - The latest independent poll here has put Premier Ewart Brown only narrowly ahead of Opposition Leader Michael Dunkley in the popularity stakes going into the December 18 general elections even though another recent poll showed the governing Progressive Labour Party (PLP) well ahead of the Opposition United Bermuda Party (UBP) in popular support. There is a marked racial tinge to how people view Brown, who promised to \"bury\" the UBP after he was elected Premier in October of last year. Some 78.7 per cent of blacks are in favour of him, 16.5 per cent against and 4.9 per cent not sure.

Promising no major policy shift, Dunkley said the party would be about team work. He is the UBP's third leader in 15 months. Dunkley was elected unopposed on Monday night along with Shadow Finance Minister Patricia Gordon-Pamplin who became deputy leader. Dunkley paid tribute to outgoing leader Wayne Furbert, who finally stepped down a week ago after weeks of party wrangling.

While the percentage of voters who have a favourable impression of Cox remains relatively, the proportion of voters who view her unfavourably has increased from 35 per cent in May to 41 per cent. Voters also gave a resounding thumbs-down to Cox's deputy Derrick Burgess with just 18 per cent of poll respondents saying they had a favourable impression of him and 48 per cent viewing him unfavourably.

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC - New Opposition leader Kim Swan has named his predecessor Michael Dunkley as leader of the United Bermuda Party (UBP) in the Senate while giving himself the tourism brief. The party's new deputy leader, Cole Simons, stays with Environment, adding Energy to his brief. John Barritt remains the UBP's House Leader, whip and spokesman for legislative reform. The UBP was beaten by 22 seats to 14 by the ruling Progressive Labour Party (PLP) in December's bitterly fought election, a repeat of the 2003 national poll.
