Denham On DuVal: Florida Southern College History Professor Celebrates Double Publication
2015
DuVal's name was spelled various ways during his lifetime, and \"Duval\" became the common spelling now used for the county in Northeast Florida and the renowned street in Key West. [James M. Denham], however, honors the spelling the subject preferred, with a capital \"V.\" As the book's subtitle suggests, Denham said DuVal's political accomplishments were matched by his reputation for dazzling rhetoric. As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, DuVal befriended the famed author Washington Irving, and Denham said the politician's highly embellished stories provided inspiration for Irving's book, \"The Early Experiences of Ralph Ringwood.\" \"That's what really captivated me about DuVal is he was a political operative ... He was kind of a man of the frontier and used humor and tall tales and embellished rhetoric, all the kinds of things that are not really that popular today,\" Denham said. \"Though not well known, he kind of made Davy Crockett look like an amateur.\"
