Challenges In The Selection Of Esp Materials
The key elements in teaching English for Specific Purposes are the proper selection, development and use of materials. Due to the specificity of the subject-matter specialisms in diverse courses, the available published textbooks have often proved to be insufficient. This articles addresses the problem of ESP materials and suggests ways in which the ESP instructor can identify, adapt and use ESP materials in an effective way.
Subtle Energy Perception: Pilot Study with a Buddha relic
Buddha relics are crystal-like objects that are purportedly found among the cremated ashes of Buddhist spiritual masters. Because these objects are believed to emanate subtle energy, we were interested to test the ability of professional clairvoyants to detect the presence of the Buddha relic without visual cues. After 5 minutes of the subject becoming familiar with the sensations associated with relic inside the first container, the PI escorted the subject out of the building while the RA returned to the room and moved the relic into one of the numbered containers (chosen according to the output of a random number generator). The fact that the seers reported discernible energetic perceptions that were distinct from the empty containers highlights the need to maximize the signal to noise ratio for measures tests of subtle energy perception.
Electrostatic Precipitators as an Indoor Air Cleaner—A Literature Review
Many people spend most of their time in an indoor environment. A positive relationship exists between indoor environmental quality and the health, wellbeing, and productivity of occupants in buildings. The indoor environment is affected by pollutants, such as gases and particles. Pollutants can be removed from the indoor environment in various ways. Air-cleaning devices are commonly marketed as benefiting the removal of air pollutants and, consequently, improving indoor air quality. Depending on the type of cleaning technology, air cleaners may generate undesired and toxic byproducts. Different air filtration technologies, such as electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) have been introduced to the market. The ESP has been used in buildings because it can remove particles while only causing low pressure drops. Moreover, ESPs can be either in-duct or standalone units. This review aims to provide an overview of ESP use, methods for testing this product, the performance of existing ESPs concerning removing pollutants and their byproducts, and the existing market for ESPs.
ESP Teachers: Insights, Challenges and Needs in the EFL Context
This research investigated ESP teachers’ perceptions of the underlying concepts, challenges, and needs of ESP teaching in Thailand. A six-Likert questionnaire and checklist were given to 63 ESP teachers at a Thai government university. An interview was also used to further explore 12 teacher participants’ issues, challenges, and needs in ESP practices. The results indicated that Thai university teachers had a piecemeal understanding of ESP concepts, and they also agreed that ESP practice is a complex and challenging task. Moreover, the current findings indicate that language teachers must work in tandem with the content teachers. Indeed, the results strongly suggest that teachers require professional training in ESP teaching. Overall, ESP teachers must embody the five essential elements of ESP, including a language teacher, a content teacher, a researcher, a course planner and material provider, and a course evaluator.
Rorschach Inkblot Test and Parapsychology
Since Gertrude Schmeidler's monograph ESP in relation to Rorschach test evaluation (1960), the famous Rorschach inkblot test has hardly been associated with parapsychology. [...]a study has investigated traumatic experiences of 31 people who report recurrent ESP experiences using the Rorschach Traumatic Content Index with a control group (Scimeca et al., 2015). The most obvious are the influence of his psychiatric colleagues Carl Gustav Jung (1919) (word association test), based on his own studies on mediumship; the self-taught psychoanalyst Herbert Silberer, who was interested in symbolism, mysticism, and esotericism, and published an article in 1912 on lecanomancy (a method of divination by inspecting the water in a pool); and Szymon Hens (1917) (inkblots and imaginative function).
Reconsidering ESP Assessment Against the Background of Online Learning
Online learning has placed the educational process not behind a screen but in front of a mirror that has challenged its face-to-face practices and has led to major changes not only as regards the design of the teaching materials, but also as regards the strategies employed in the assessment activities. Online environment has marked a shift within the educational process by establishing the need to focus more on a formative assessment, rather than on the summative one. As part of this continuous assessment the teacher has to provide effective and knowledge-yielding learning input, he/she needs to constantly guide the learners in the learning process, to identify methods to keep them motivated, to constantly provide feedback on their progress, to create opportunities for them to get involved, and finally, to turn them from passive recipients confined behind a screen into active creators of knowledge.
Investigating the English Specific Needs of the M.A Students of Ancient Iran History
This study investigated the different aspects of the English for Specific Purposes Needs of M.A students of Ancient Iran History studying at the Department of History in Iranian universities. The participants were selected from the universities of Iran based on convenience sampling. The Needs Analysis was designed on a qualitative and quantitative survey, using the semi-structured interviews and the questionnaires. 45 M.A students and 5 ESP instructors expressed their views through questionnaires and interviews. The results revealed that the students asked for the inclusion of the four language skills in their ESP courses. That is, a new ESP course focusing on the integration of all four skills should be developed. The instructors, however, echoed the reading skill as the predominant need for students to achieve a higher standard in academic and future careers. The interviews showed that the ESP courses were not sufficient to account for the specific needs of the students since these courses were not prepared according to the learners’ needs. The students expressed that they needed to master English because they had to use English sources during their academic studies. However, the ESP courses did not fully prepare the students to embark on their studies because it did not sufficiently take into account the learners’ needs. The students were dissatisfied with the current ESP courses of Ancient Iran History and asked for the urgent revision of ESP materials. The ESP instructors’ responses to the interviews indicated dissatisfaction with the students’ poor language skills, lack of motivation, and the insufficiency of the needs-responsive ESP coursebook. Giving more weight to English in the M.A entrance exam was suggested by instructors as one possible solution as this may increase the students’ level of motivation which may lead to the improvement of their language proficiency. The findings of this study can help researchers and ESP practitioners make particular pedagogic decisions. It presented a detailed description of the process of the Needs Analysis as a prerequisite step to design an ESP coursebook for English specific courses of the Ancient Iran History field at M. A level.
