Challenges in Recognizing and Supporting Gifted Students with Dual Exceptionalities in the Educational Process
Twice-exceptional students, who have giftedness combined with special educational needs, are often overlooked, which hinders the provision of appropriate support in the educational process. This paper analyses the attitudes and competences of professionals working with this group of students, as well as the ways knowledge is acquired in this field. The research results show that most professionals recognize the importance of identifying twice-exceptionality, yet only a few systematically incorporate appropriate pedagogical approaches into practice. Knowledge in this area is mostly gained through informal sources and experience sharing, since formal professional training is limited. The need for developing specialized training programs is emphasized to improve the identification and effective support of this specific group of students.
撥雲見日─身心障礙資賦優異學生教學輔導之行動研究Dispelling the Clouds and Seeing the Sun: Action Research on Teaching and Counseling for Twice-Exceptional Students in an Elementary School
本研究以一所國小為研究場域,採行動研究法,邀集該國小之導師、身障教育教師及資優教育教師組成研究團隊,透過計畫、行動、觀察、省思、修改、再行動的動態歷程,檢視並調整一名自閉症兼一般智能資賦優異學生原有之教學輔導運作機制及內涵,且探討調整之結果。研究結果顯示,教師合作之身心障礙資賦優異學生教學輔導運作有助於提升學生整體表現,其具體成果在教師合作方面有:一、建立以個管教師擔任教師合作協調者之機制;二、採用靈活有彈性的教師合作方式;三、主動協調各類教師進行師生配對。在身障資優學生所需之支持與成效方面,則有:一、擬定以優勢發展為核心的教學輔導內涵與執行策略,使身障資優學生整體表現提升;二、建構普通班的支持性環境,成為身障資優學生展現優勢的舞臺。本研究根據研究結論,分別從實務現場及未來研究提出若干建議。 This study explored the operating mechanism and the content of teaching and counseling provided to twice-exceptional students by a team of teachers consisting of a regular classroom teacher, a disability resource room teacher, and a giftedness resource room teacher. The subject of the case study was a gifted fourth-grade student with autism. The research was conducted through a cyclical process of plan, action, observation, reflection, revision, and reaction. The results demonstrated that providing appropriate services for twice-exceptional students through collaborative efforts of various types of teachers can improves students’ overall performance. The results for teacher collaboration were (1) establishing a mechanism for case managers to lead teachers through collaboration; (2) adopting teacher cooperation flexibility; (3) actively coordinating various teachers for teacher-student matching. The results for providing support for twiceexceptional students were (1) developing strengths-based content and implementing strategies for twice-exceptional students; (2) constructing a performance stage for twice-exceptional students to demonstrate their talents in a supportive regular classroom setting. Finally, we proposed some suggestions for governmental education departments, schools, and future studies.

The Effects of Disability Labeling on Teachers’ Referrals of Twice-exceptional Children to Gifted Programs in Saudi Arabia
The issue of biases associated with labeling students as gifted or as having a disability presents a significant challenge to educational professionals with regard to identification and the provision of services. In the presence of labels indicating giftedness, disability, and twice exceptionality, research consistently demonstrated biases on the part of parents, teachers, and even other students. These biases could prevent students from receiving the services they need to achieve their fullest potential (Bianco & Leech, 2010). The current study systematically replicated a study by Bianco and Leech (2010) and examined the influence of disability labels on teachers’ decisions to refer students to gifted programming. Further, this study investigated whether there were any differences in teachers’ responses based on the type of teaching certificate they held (i.e., gifted education, special education, general education). Three groups of in-service teachers (85 general, 59 special, and 43 gifted education teachers) from the Western region of Saudi Arabia participated in the study. A cross-sectional survey methodology was employed. Teachers were randomly assigned to one of three survey conditions that consisted of a vignette that described a student with both giftedness and high potential traits, differing only with respect to one of three labeling conditions (no label, learning disability [LD], autism spectrum disorder [ASD]). Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess the influence of teacher type and the labeling condition on the teachers’ ratings. Responses to an open-ended question that asked teachers to provide a reason for their referral decisions were analyzed qualitatively. The quantitative analysis showed neither teacher type nor the presence or absence of a disability label had a significant influence on the overall ratings, which was in sharp contrast to Bianco and Leech’s (2010) results. The interaction of the two variables was also nonsignificant. Most of the participants (94%) chose to agree or strongly agree with a referral. However, of the few nonreferrals, most were for students with ASD. Three themes emerged from the qualitative analysis of the teachers’ rationales including (a) the student shows gifted traits, (b) the student’s skills could be cultivated with support, and (c) the student does not fit the definition for giftedness. Findings from this study provided insights into the issues of labeling students and the status of twice-exceptionality in Saudi Arabia. The results indicated limited, negative bias among different types of teachers with respect to students with disabilities. Also, the participants in this study showed a strong orientation toward supporting the growth and development of the student in all three vignette conditions. However, it remained clear that Saudi Arabia would still greatly benefit from establishing a clear policy on twiceexceptionality and providing training programs to educators with respect to defining, identifying, and educating students with giftedness and disabilities.
FACTORES SISTÉMICOS ASOCIADOS A LA EXPERIENCIA ESCOLAR DE ADOLESCENTES CON ALTO POTENCIAL INTELECTUAL
En este estudio de enfoque mixto, comparativo, se evaluó la influencia de factores sistémicos internos y externos en alumnos con alto potencial intelectual que acuden a un centro educativo extracurricular (CEE). Los hallazgos indican que los factores internos, resiliencia e inteligencia emocional, ayudan en el manejo de estrés que tienen los alumnos para sobrellevar las actividades extracurriculares, y los factores externos de organización familiar y su experiencia dentro del CEE impactan en la motivación y el desempeño que tienen para a seguir preparándose académicamente.
فاعلية برنامج تدريبي لتنمية القدرات الحسية مبنى على نظرية التكامل الحسي في خفض السلوك الإنعزالي لدى الأطفال التوحديين
هدفت الدراسة: هدفت الدراسة إلى التحقق من فاعلية برنامج تدريبي لتنمية القدرات الحسية مبني على نظرية التكامل الحسي في خفض السلوك الإنعزالي لدي أطفال التوحد.nعينة الدراسة: تكونت من 4 أطفال مصابين بالتوحد تتراوح أعمارهم بين 5-7 سنوات.nأدوات الدراسة: استخدمت الدراسة، مقياس تقدير توحد الطفولة (CARS) Childhood Autism Rating Scale، مقياس فينلاند للسلوك التكيفي، مقياس تقدير القدرات الحسية للأطفال التوحديين، مقياس الانعزال للأطفال التوحديين، برنامج تدريبي لتنمية القدرات الحسية مبني على نظرية التكامل الحسي للأطفال المصابين بالتوحد.nنتائج الدراسة: أشارت نتائج الدراسة إلى نجاح البرنامج التدريبي القائم على نظرية التكامل الحسي في تنمية القدرات الحسية لدى الأطفال المصابين بالتوحد، كما نجح البرنامج التدريبي القائم على نظرية التكامل الحسي في خفض السلوك الإنعزالي لدى الأطفال المصابين بالتوحد
Access to special education for exceptional students in French immersion programs: An equity issue
Abstract Exceptional pupils enrolled in Canadian French immersion programs rarely have access to the same range of special education programs and services that are available to students in the regular English program. More often than not, students with special needs are encouraged to transfer to English programs to access necessary support services. This counselling-out process perpetuates the elitist status commonly attributed to French immersion programs. From a critical pedagogy perspective, this inquiry examines the lack of incentive on the part of multiple French immersion stakeholders to accommodate students with special needs. It further attempts to unveil the myths created by these stakeholders to better understand this discriminatory educational practice. The impact of federal and provincial funding models on access to special education programs and services is discussed, and the application of funding allocations by English-language district school boards is explored. The inquiry concludes with recommendations to promote more inclusionary practices.
