With a subtle yet penetrating understanding of the intricate interplay of gender, race, and class, Sheba George examines an unusual immigration pattern to analyze what happens when women who migrate before men become the breadwinners in the family. Focusing on a group of female nurses who moved from India to the United States before their husbands, she shows that this story of economic mobility and professional achievement conceals underlying conditions of upheaval not only in the families and immigrant community but also in the sending community in India. This richly textured and impeccably researched study deftly illustrates the complex reconfigurations of gender and class relations concealed behind a quintessential American success story. When Women Come First explains how men who lost social status in the immigration process attempted to reclaim ground by creating new roles for themselves in their church. Ironically, they were stigmatized by other upper class immigrants as men who needed to \"play in the church\" because the \"nurses were the bosses\" in their homes. At the same time, the nurses were stigmatized as lower class, sexually loose women with too much independence. A groundbreaking book that seeks to understand dance as labor,Sweating Sarisexamines dancers not just as aesthetic bodies but as transnational migrant workers and wage earners who negotiate citizenship and gender issues.Srinivasan merges ethnography, history, critical race theory, performance and post-colonial studies among other disciplines to investigate the embodied experience of Indian dance. The dancers' sweat stained and soaked saris, the aching limbs are emblematic of global circulations of labor, bodies, capital, and industrial goods. Thus the sweating sari of the dancer stands in for her unrecognized labor.Srinivasan shifts away from the usual emphasis on Indian women dancers as culture bearers of the Indian nation. She asks us to reframe the movements of late nineteenth century transnational Nautch Indian dancers to the foremother of modern dance Ruth St. Denis in the early twentieth century to contemporary teenage dancers in Southern California, proposing a transformative theory of dance, gendered-labor, and citizenship that is far-reaching.

The Indian American community is one of the fastest growing
immigrant communities in the U.S. Unlike previous generations, they
are marked by a high degree of training as medical doctors,
engineers, scientists, and university professors. American
Karma draws on participant observation and in-depth
interviews to explore how these highly skilled professionals have
been inserted into the racial dynamics of American society and
transformed into \"people of color.\" Focusing on first-generation,
middle-class Indians in American suburbia, it also sheds light on
how these transnational immigrants themselves come to understand
and negotiate their identities. Bhatia forcefully contends that to
fully understand migrant identity and cultural formation it is
essential that psychologists and others think of selfhood as firmly
intertwined with sociocultural factors such as colonialism, gender,
language, immigration, and race-based immigration laws.
American Karma offers a new framework for thinking
about the construction of selfhood and identity in the context of
immigration. This innovative approach advances the field of
psychology by incorporating critical issues related to the concept
of culture, including race, power, and conflict, and will also

In a series of interviews conducted from 1969 to 1971 and again from 1998 to 1999, more than two hundred members of the Florida Seminole community described their lives for the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program at the University of Florida. Some of those interviews, now showcased in this volume, shed light on how the Seminoles’ society, culture, religion, government, health care, and economy had changed during a tumultuous period in Florida’s history. In 1970 the Seminoles lived in relative poverty, dependent on the Bureau of Indian Affairs, tourist trade, cattle breeding, handicrafts, and truck farming. By 2006 they were operating six casinos, and in 2007 they purchased Hard Rock International for $965 million. Within one generation, the tribe moved from poverty and relative obscurity to entrepreneurial success and wealth. Seminole Voices relates how economic changes have affected everyday life and values. The Seminoles’ frank opinions and fascinating stories offer a window into the world of a modern Native community as well as a useful barometer of changes affecting its members at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
