REVIEW OF THE LIFE HISTORY AND CONSERVATION OF FEDERALLY ENDANGERED PLANT SPECIES OF THE LOWER RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS, U.S.A
This review aims to summarize information critical to the conservation of the federally listed endangered species of South Texas, which occur along the border of Texas and Mexico. This paper describes the characteristics, habitat, population status, distribution, life history, threats, and restoration of endangered plant species of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas, which includes Cameron, Willacy, Hidalgo, and Starr County. Seven federally listed species are considered including Ambrosia cheiranthifolia, Asclepias prostrata, Astrophytum asterias, Ayenia limitaris, Manihot walkerae, Lesquerella thamnophila (syn. Physaria thamnophila), and Thymophylla tephroleuca. An eighth species, Physostegia correllii is under consideration for federal listing by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This paper assembles information on the background, biological status, major threats, and conservation to aid managers and the scientific community in restoring and managing these species. El objetivo de esta revisión es resumir la información crítica para la conservación de las especies en peligro de extinción incluidas en la lista federal del sur de Texas, que se encuentran a lo largo de la frontera entre Texas y México. En este documento se describen las características, el hábitat, el estado de la población, la distribución, el ciclo biológico, las amenazas y la restauración de las especies vegetales en peligro de extinción del Valle Inferior del Río Grande, Texas, que incluye los condados de Cameron, Willacy, Hidalgo y Starr. ASTRAGALUS ENDOPTERUS (FABACEAE), A SPECIES PURPORTED AS EXTINCT, FOUND IN NORTHERN ARIZONA, U.S.A
Astragalus endopterus (Barneby) Barneby, listed as an extinct species in a recent Conservation Biology paper (Knapp et al. 2021) was found in abundance after three hours of targeted searching. Continued searches revealed thousands of plants. Our work has doubled the known range of the species. Astragalus endopterus seems to mostly occur on sheetwash deposits composed of particles derived mostly from windblown sands along with a component of clay probably derived from the Chinle Formation. We have no indications that the species may have been in decline or was ever on the verge of extinction. Astragalus endopterus, catalogado como especie extinta en un artículo reciente de Conservation Biology (Knapp et al. 2021), se encontró en abundancia después de tres horas de búsqueda especifica. Las búsquedas continuas revelaron miles de plantas. Nuestro trabajo ha duplicado el rango conocido de la especie. Astragalus endopterus parece ocurrir principalmente en depósitos de láminas compuestos de partículas derivadas principalmente de arenas arrastradas por el viento junto con un componente de arcilla probablemente derivado de la Formación Chinle. No tenemos evidencia que indique que pudo haber estado en declive o al borde de la extinción.
NOTEWORTHY COLLECTIONS FROM THE ALABAMA FLORA (U.S.A.)
From continued botanical exploration in Alabama, noteworthy collections representing seventeen taxa are included. Thirteen of these taxa are reported new to Alabama while the remaining four are significant for historical considerations. Each taxon cited below is vouchered into the University of West Alabama Herbarium (UWAL) with duplicates to be distributed. POTAMOGETON WRIGHTII (POTAMOGETONACEAE) NATURALIZED IN OHIO, U.S.A
In 2021, an unknown Potamogeton species was discovered in Alum Creek Lake in central Ohio. After we were unable to identify the plants as any known North American species, we expanded our search to include all pondweed species and incorporated molecular data to aid in the identification. DNA sequences were obtained for the nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the plastid trnT-trnF region and compared against previously reported sequences for Potamogeton species. Morphological and molecular data consistently identified the plants as P. wrightii, a species native to eastern Eurasia and Malesia and not previously reported to be naturalized in North America. En 2021, se descubrió una especie desconocida de Potamogeton en el lago Alum Creek en el centro de Ohio. Después de no poder identificar las plantas como ninguna especie conocida de América del Norte, ampliamos nuestra búsqueda para incluir todas las especies de espiga de agua e incorporamos datos moleculares para ayudar en la identificación. Se obtuvieron secuencias de ADN para la región nuclear espaciadora transcrita interna (ITS) y la región trnT-trnF del plástido y se compararon con secuencias informadas previamente para especies de Potamogeton. A FLORISTIC INVENTORY OF VASCULAR PLANTS GROWING WILD IN THE NAPLES BOTANICAL GARDEN AND ON IMMEDIATELY ADJACENT LAND (COLLIER COUNTY) FLORIDA, U.S.A
Documented presently as growing wild within, and immediately adjacent to, the Naples Botanical Garden (Collier Co., Florida) are individuals of 115 families, 351 genera, 576 species, and 587 infrageneric taxa of vascular plants. Of the 587 infrageneric taxa documented presently, 414 (70.6%) are clearly native and 13 (2.2%) are endemic to Florida. Herein, seven main kinds of habitats are recognized for the study area, and individual taxa inhabit one or more of those habitats. Seventeen presently reported infrageneric taxa are listed as Endangered (nine taxa) or Threatened (eight taxa) in Florida, and seven are listed as Critically Imperiled in South Florida. Based on the present study and on previous field work undertaken at the study site, 32 species plus two varieties are newly reported for Collier County. En el Jardín Botánico de Naples (Collier Co., Florida) hay documentados actualmente 115 familias, 351 géneros, 576 especies y 587 taxones infragenéricos de plantas vasculares silvestres. De estos últimos, 414 (70,6%) son claramente nativos y 13 (2,2%) son endémicos de Florida. Aquí se reconocen siete tipos principales de hábitats para el área de estudio, y los taxones individuales habitan uno o más de esos hábitats. Diecisiete taxones infragenéricos reportados actualmente están listados como En Peligro (nueve taxones) o Amenazados (ocho taxones) en Florida, y siete están listados como En Peligro Crítico en el sur de Florida.
