Re-Evaluating Education in Japan and Korea
International comparisons of student achievement in mathematics, science, and reading have consistently shown that Japanese and Korean students outperform their peers in other parts of world. Understandably, this has attracted many policymakers and researchers seeking to emulate this success, but it has also attracted strong criticism and a range of misconceptions of the Japanese and Korean education system. Directly challenging these misconceptions, which are prevalent in both academic and public discourses, this book seeks to provide a more nuanced view of the Japanese and Korean education systems. This includes the idea that the highly standardized means of education makes outstanding students mediocre; that the emphasis on memorization leads to a lack of creativity and independent thinking; that students' successes are a result of private supplementary education; and that the Japanese and Korean education systems are homogenous to the point of being one single system. Using empirical data Hyunjoon Park re-evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of the existing education systems in Japan and Korea and reveals whether the issues detailed above are real or unfounded and misinformed. Offering a balanced view of the evolving and complex nature of academic achievement among Japanese and Korean students, this book will appeal to students and scholars of Asian, international and comparative education, as well as those interested in Asian society more broadly.

Curriculum Development and Assessment Guidelines for the National Standards Project
This book is designed to make public the detailed work that has been developed for the Korean National Standards Project in two areas, namely curriculum development and assessment guideline. The first part of the book provides basic information on Korea and the Korean language, together with its structure and aims. Part Two discusses the four levels of curriculum currently present in high schools and colleges. The third section consists of assessment guidelines to the four levels available in college education.The entire framework offered here is based on the 5Cs principle (specifically Communication, Cultures, Comparisons, Connections, and Communities) promoted by American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, with more fine-tuned specifications of standards for each aspect.
Education in Radical Uncertainty
In Education in Radical Uncertainty, Stephen Carney and Ulla Ambrosius Madsen return to the philosophical and social critique of Jean Baudrillard and relate his work to the field of education, particularly to comparative studies of youth and schooling in different parts of the world. The book explores how the initial interest in Baudrillard’s work has been replaced by skepticism, and how the field of educational studies has been complicit in marginalizing his influence. The authors argue that labelling Baudrillard as the most extreme of the post-modernists is both misguided and unfortunate, denying a generation of education researchers an engagement with insights that are both profound and challenging. They do so by exploring three of his key ideas: simulation leading to spectacle and seduction; integral reality leading to disappearance; and evil, reversibility and return. The authors situate Baudrillard's works in the broader context of works by other post-foundational theorists, such as Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze, as well as exploring them in relation to empirical studies. Considering ethnographic work with youth in three quite different contexts - Denmark, South Korea and Zambia – the authors use a range of data to bring the different field studies alive and to contrast them with conventional portraits of the Global South. The Effects of Globalization on Korea
There are a plethora of studies on globalization, yet few studies have examined the overall effects of globalization on Korea. Thus, in this study, we investigated the overall effects of globalization on Korea's economy, society, language, and culture. The Korean economy enjoyed further growth as globalization facilitated trade expansion. Yet, income inequality and wealth gap deteriorated. Globalization is expanding generational gap as the younger generation introduces changes in language usage. Social culture is altering from Confucianism and collectivism to individualism and materialism particularly among young people. International marriages raise many social issues as well. Children born in international or interethnic couple experience serious identity confusion, requiring the government's and society's support. Gender equality and low childbirth are serious problems for future economic growth. In summary, globalization helped Korea's economic growth, yet introduced many other issues.
New Women in Colonial Korea
This book provides the first English translation of some of the central archival material concerning the development of New Woman (sin yosong) in Korea during the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. It includes selected writings of both women and men who put forward their views on some of the key issues of new womanhood, including gender equality, chastity, divorce, education, fashion, hygiene, birth control, and the women's movement.
