Impact of a web‐based educational program on Japanese nurses tobacco cessation practice and attitudes in oncology settings
Purpose To evaluate the effects of a short web‐based educational program on Japanese nurses’ self‐reported attitudes toward tobacco cessation and their use of interventions to help smokers to quit. Design Prospective, single‐group design with a pre‐educational survey, a short web‐based educational program, and a follow‐up survey at 3 months. Methods Clinical nurses were asked to view two prerecorded webcasts about helping smokers quit. They completed two online surveys, one at baseline and one at a 3‐month follow‐up. Generalized linear models were used to determine changes in nurses’ self‐reported routine practice after the study intervention. Findings A total of 1401 nurses responded to the baseline survey, 678 of whom completed the follow‐up survey. Compared with baseline, nurses at follow‐up were more likely to advise smokers to quit (odds ratio [OR] = 1.45, 95% confidence interval [CI: 1.15, 1.82]), assess patients’ interest in quitting (OR = 1.46, 95% CI [1.01, 1.04]), and assist patients with smoking cessation (OR = 1.34, 95% CI [1.04, 1.72]). However, the proportion of nurses who consistently recommended resources for tobacco cessation did not significantly improve at follow‐up. Conclusions This study provides preliminary evidence that a web‐based educational program can increase nurses’ implementation of tobacco dependence interventions in cancer care practice. Sustaining these educational efforts could increase nurses’ involvement in providing these interventions, encourage nurses to refer patients to cessation resources, and support nurses’ attitudes towards their role in smoking cessation. Clinical relevance Our short web‐based educational program can increase nurses’ use of tobacco‐dependence interventions in cancer care practice. This role can be enhanced with additional information about existing cessation resources that nurses could use to refer patients for support post‐discharge. Japanese nurses, when properly educated, are willing and significant contributors to promote tobacco use cessation for cancer patients. The contribution can be facilitated through nursing care protocol that integrate tobacco use cessation interventions within evidence‐based cancer care approaches.
The Development and Effectiveness of a Web-Based Emergency Management Educational Program for Long-Term Care Facility Interprofessional Practitioners
Long-term care facility (LTCF) interprofessional practitioners who care for residents at high risk of emergencies due to old age, frailty, and complex diseases must be able to manage such emergencies collaboratively. A shared mental model (SMM) enhances performance toward a common goal by allowing effective collaboration through promoting the sharing of knowledge and skills among interprofessional team members. Therefore, this study developed a web-based educational program for LTCF interprofessional practitioners based on an SMM. We followed a network-based instructional system design that consists of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation for developing the program. A total of 54 participants completed the educational program in four LTCFs in South Korea. A significant improvement was identified in communication knowledge, communication confidence, role recognition, transactive memory system, and team effectiveness in the experimental group. The results show that the program improved the emergency management process and reliability among interprofessional practitioners, positively impacting interprofessional collaboration and ensuring the safety of patients during emergencies in LTCFs.
Effectiveness of web-based education program on knowledge, coping, burden, and quality of life among colorectal cancer caregivers in Vietnam: a quasi-experimental study
Background Web-based interventions have been acknowledged as a valuable resource in managing caregiving duties, enhancing coping abilities, and improving quality of life (QoL), thereby alleviating burden and mitigating stress. The aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness of a web-based education program on the knowledge, coping strategies, burden, and QoL of caregivers of patients with colorectal cancer. Method A quasi-experimental design was conducted in two randomly selected hospitals. The experimental and control groups consisted of 62 and 65 participants, respectively. The experimental group underwent a web-based education program (WBEP) for 12 weeks and received regular care, and the control group received only regular care. Data were gathered at four intervals: baseline and then 3, 6, and 12 weeks from baseline. Generalized estimating equations were used to understand the effectiveness of the treatment. Results Compared to the mean scores in the control group, those in the experimental group for dysfunctional coping significantly decreased at 6 (14.96 ± 6.57) and 12 weeks (13.92 ± 6.46); emotion-focused coping also significantly declined at 3 (20.52 ± 7.54), 6 (17.25 ± 8.91), and 12 weeks (15.91 ± 8.69); and burden scores were significantly lower at 12 weeks (16.01 ± 10.63). Conclusions The WBEP demonstrated a positive effect on the experimental group in decreasing the use of emotion-focused coping, dysfunctional coping, and burden of care for caregivers but not on knowledge and QoL. The results indicate that healthcare professionals should recognize that a WBEP is an effective method by which medical professionals can engage with and provide support to the caregivers of cancer patients.

RETRACTED: An Educational Web-Based Expert System for Novice Highway Technology in Flexible Pavement Maintenance
Nowadays, higher education worldwide is affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. It has affected students’ attendance in the universities and causes universities to close down in more than 190 countries. On the other hand, novice engineers studied only a few lectures related to highway engineering. Their lectures have included very little knowledge about asphalt pavement construction as highway engineering consists of many areas that are not studied in detail during their studying years subject to their traditional education. Due to all mentioned, a new drive to promote online learning paves the way to evaluate our future approach to curriculum development and delivery of educational materials for engineering courses. However, experts can offer solutions to these problems using their past experience. Hence, a system that allows experts to share their experience with other engineers after completing a project is needed. Nevertheless, the web-based expert system for maintaining flexible pavement problems in tropical regions (ESTAMPSYS) designed in this study is a novel concept. Prior to developing this system, the need for such a system was determined through literature review and validated through a questionnaire survey. Experts were interviewed, and a questionnaire survey was conducted to construct the knowledge base of the system. Knowledge was presented as rules and coded in software through PHP programming. Web pages that support the user interface were designed using a framework that consists of CSS, HTML, and J-Query. Furthermore, the system was tested by an array of users engaged in highway engineering, namely, experts, teaching experts, novice engineers, and students. The mean values of the overall system evaluation performed by 20 users using a five-point Likert scale were 4, 4.5, 3.75, 4.25, 5, 4, and 3.5. Expert and user satisfaction prove the effectiveness of the proposed system.
Evaluating the Acceptability of a Brief Web-Based Alcohol Misuse Prevention Program Among US Military Cadets: Mixed Methods Formative Evaluation
As alcohol misuse remains pervasive within the military, evidence-based prevention programs that are feasible to implement and appropriately tailored to meet the needs and norms of military personnel are critically needed. Further, programs that target future military leaders, such as trainees, recruits, and cadets, may be especially impactful. eCHECKUP TO GO is a web-based, evidence-based brief alcohol intervention designed to reduce alcohol misuse through education and personalized feedback that may be suitable for military trainees. However, because it was developed for civilian students, efforts to adapt the content for military settings are needed. This study aimed to evaluate the acceptability of a military version of eCHECKUP TO GO, tailored to include military-specific terminology and alcohol use statistics. US Air Force Academy cadets were recruited to participate in a single-arm, mixed methods study. Following the completion of eCHECKUP TO GO, participants completed a survey that assessed satisfaction with specific aspects of the user experience, including ease of use, design, and relevance of the information and personalized feedback (range: 1=strongly disagree to 7=strongly agree). A subset of cadets also participated in a focus group to expound on the survey responses. Survey participants included 22 cadets (n=12, 55% male; mean age 19.6, SD 1.8 years). In addition, 6 (27%) cadets participated in the focus group. Participants were satisfied with the program overall (mean 5.8, SD 0.9) and gave the highest ratings to ease of use (mean 6.6, SD 0.7), site design (mean 6.5, SD 0.6), and site interactivity (mean 6.4, SD 1.0). Items pertaining to tailoring, relevance, and amount of content specific to cadets scored lowest (mean 5.8, SD 1.4; mean 5.6, SD 1.4; and mean 5.5, SD 1.5, respectively). Most (n=15, 68%) participants said they would act upon the information they were provided. Focus group participants made suggestions for improved tailoring, such as increasing content on social aspects of drinking and military-specific risks of alcohol misuse (eg, Uniform Code of Military Justice violations). Although the acceptability of eCHECKUP TO GO was high, continued efforts are needed to ensure the content accurately reflects the experiences of cadets. Researchers who design military health promotion interventions need to consider the varied contexts within the force and rigorously evaluate the acceptability of all content before implementation.
