\A Way to Paradise\: Pious Neoliberalism, Islam, and Faith-Based Development
2012
Three faith-based development organizations (FBDOs) in Cairo and the popular religious star, Amr Khaled, illustrate the melding of Islamic piety and neoliberal development. Together they produce a \"pious neoliberalism\" that transforms both Islamic charity and neoliberalism as they narrate an Islamic solution to social problems. Their narration links volunteerism, self-help rhetoric, and management science to piety. Focusing on three Islamic development organizations, this study demonstrates how they promote financial investment, entrepreneurship, and business skills as important components of religiosity. The combination of piety and neoliberal values illustrates a new space of compatibility between neoliberalism and Islamism that changes both the spaces for and impact of Islamic da'wa (preaching) in Cairo. FBDOs alter socioeconomic space in Cairo as they insert religiosity into spaces previously seen as un-Islamic. The research contributes to our understanding of the compatibility between religious and neoliberal values through an introduction to the concept of pious neoliberalism. It contributes to our understanding of the changing role of FBDOs in the Middle East and the spatiality of such transformations.

Egypt of the Saite pharaohs, 664–525 BC
2026,2019,2023
In the 660s BC Egypt was a politically fragmented and occupied country. However, this was to change when a family of local rulers from the city of Sais declared independence from the Assyrian Empire, and in a few short years succeeded in bringing about the reunification of Egypt. The Saites established central government, reformed the economy and promoted trade. The country became prosperous, achieving a pre-eminent role in the Mediterranean world. This is the first monograph devoted entirely to a detailed exploration of the Saite Dynasty. It reveals the dynamic nature of the period, the astuteness of the Saite rulers and their considerable achievements in the political, economic, administrative and cultural spheres. It will appeal not only to students of Egyptology but also, because of the interactions of the Saite Dynasty with the Aegean and Mesopotamia worlds, to anyone interested in ancient history.
Cairo collages
2025,2020,2023
In Cairo collages, the large-scale political, economic, and social changes in Egypt brought on by the 2011 revolution are set against the declining fortunes of a single apartment building in a specific Cairo neighbourhood. The violence in Tahrir Square and Mohamed Mahmud Street; the post-January euphoric moment; the increasing militarisation of urban life; the flourishing of dystopian novels set in Cairo; the neo-liberal imaginaries of Dubai and Singapore as global models; gentrification and evictions in poor neighbourhoods; the forthcoming new administrative capital for Egypt – all are narrated in parallel to the ‘little’ story of the adventures and misfortunes of everyday interactions in a middle-class building in the neighbourhood of Doqi.
The Muslim Brotherhood and the Strategic Reframing of the Palestinian Cause in the Aftermath of October 7
2025
Since their ouster from power in Egypt and the exclusion of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) from the public and political arenas in 2013, the movement has suffered from a deep leadership crisis, exacerbated by internal divisions among three competing leaderships: the London Front, the Istanbul Front, and the Current of Change. The dramatic events of October 7, 2023, and the ensuing conflict between Israel and Hamas are perceived by the MB as a strategic opportunity to rehabilitate its image and reestablish its standing within the broader Islamist sphere. However, the politicization of the Palestinian issue has failed to mend the internal rifts, particularly given the stark differences in discourse regarding the appropriate stance toward Arab regimes allied with Israel. This article analyzes the discourse of the movement’s three central leaderships concerning their positions on Israel and the Arab regimes, with particular emphasis on the Egyptian regime. It also examines the response of Egypt’s Salafi movement to the Muslim Brotherhood’s propaganda against the Egyptian state, in the context of the Brotherhood’s efforts to craft a new narrative that blends civil resistance with emotional mobilization around the Palestinian cause. Through this analysis, the article offers an up-to-date perspective on the ideological, geopolitical, and intra-organizational factors shaping the Muslim Brotherhood’s perceptions and actions in the post–October 7 era.

2026
This article proposes a critical rereading of Silhouettes d’Égypte (1931) by Raoul Fargeon through a postcolonial methodology grounded in the theoretical contributions of Edward Said and Homi Bhabha. The text is conceived not as a mere biographical compendium, but as a discursive artifact that articulates a hierarchized and aestheticized representation of the Arab female subject in interwar Egypt. Through the analysis of discursive strategies such as exoticization, cultural duplicity (mimicry), and the aestheticization of the Other, it is argued that Fargeon’s work operates as a vehicle of ideological mediation that perpetuates a form of symbolic Francophone colonialism in literary guise.

This paper addresses three features that characterise the authoritarian restoration following what is known as the Arab springs of 2011: a) the recourse to technocratic governments, b) the proliferation of discourses on the depoliticisation of governance and c) the postponement of the renegotiation of the old social contracts. Added to this is the importance of the international nexus, given that strategic allied states at a global level and international financial institutions embrace a formula that ensures stability and facilitates the implementation of neoliberal reforms. However, this authoritarian technopopulism fails to address the economic demands of the population, nor does it provide avenues of political inclusion or a framework for drawing up a new social contract; at best, it serves momentarily as a structure to contain the protests.
