Variants of Dynamic Mode Decomposition: Boundary Condition, Koopman, and Fourier Analyses
Dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) is an Arnoldi-like method based on the Koopman operator. It analyzes empirical data, typically generated by nonlinear dynamics, and computes eigenvalues and eigenmodes of an approximate linear model. Without explicit knowledge of the dynamical operator, it extracts frequencies, growth rates, and spatial structures for each mode. We show that expansion in DMD modes is unique under certain conditions. When constructing mode-based reduced-order models of partial differential equations, subtracting a mean from the data set is typically necessary to satisfy boundary conditions. Subtracting the mean of the data exactly reduces DMD to the temporal discrete Fourier transform (DFT); this is restrictive and generally undesirable. On the other hand, subtracting an equilibrium point generally preserves the DMD spectrum and modes. Next, we introduce an “optimized” DMD that computes an arbitrary number of dynamical modes from a data set. Compared to DMD, optimized DMD is superior at calculating physically relevant frequencies, and is less numerically sensitive. We test these decomposition methods on data from a two-dimensional cylinder fluid flow at a Reynolds number of 60. Time-varying modes computed from the DMD variants yield low projection errors.
Optimization algorithms on matrix manifolds
Many problems in the sciences and engineering can be rephrased as optimization problems on matrix search spaces endowed with a so-called manifold structure. This book shows how to exploit the special structure of such problems to develop efficient numerical algorithms. It places careful emphasis on both the numerical formulation of the algorithm and its differential geometric abstraction--illustrating how good algorithms draw equally from the insights of differential geometry, optimization, and numerical analysis. Two more theoretical chapters provide readers with the background in differential geometry necessary to algorithmic development. In the other chapters, several well-known optimization methods such as steepest descent and conjugate gradients are generalized to abstract manifolds. The book provides a generic development of each of these methods, building upon the material of the geometric chapters. It then guides readers through the calculations that turn these geometrically formulated methods into concrete numerical algorithms. The state-of-the-art algorithms given as examples are competitive with the best existing algorithms for a selection of eigenspace problems in numerical linear algebra.

Learning and Expectations in Macroeconomics
A crucial challenge for economists is figuring out how people interpret the world and form expectations that will likely influence their economic activity. Inflation, asset prices, exchange rates, investment, and consumption are just some of the economic variables that are largely explained by expectations. Here George Evans and Seppo Honkapohja bring new explanatory power to a variety of expectation formation models by focusing on the learning factor. Whereas the rational expectations paradigm offers the prevailing method to determining expectations, it assumes very theoretical knowledge on the part of economic actors. Evans and Honkapohja contribute to a growing body of research positing that households and firms learn by making forecasts using observed data, updating their forecast rules over time in response to errors. This book is the first systematic development of the new statistical learning approach. Depending on the particular economic structure, the economy may converge to a standard rational-expectations or a \"rational bubble\" solution, or exhibit persistent learning dynamics. The learning approach also provides tools to assess the importance of new models with expectational indeterminacy, in which expectations are an independent cause of macroeconomic fluctuations. Moreover, learning dynamics provide a theory for the evolution of expectations and selection between alternative equilibria, with implications for business cycles, asset price volatility, and policy. Similarity relations and exponential of dual-generalized complex matrices
In this study, taking into account the fundamental properties of dual-generalized complex (DGC) matrices, various types of similarity relations are introduced considering coneigenvalues/coneigenvectors via di erent conjugates. The exponential version of DGC matrices are identified and then their theoretical characteristic theorems are obtained. Finally, examples for DGC matrix exponential are given.
Existence and Nonexistence of Positive Solutions for Perturbations of the Anisotropic Eigenvalue Problem
We consider a Dirichlet problem, which is a perturbation of the eigenvalue problem for the anisotropic p-Laplacian. We assume that the perturbation is (p(z)−1)-sublinear, and we prove an existence and nonexistence theorem for positive solutions as the parameter λ moves on the positive semiaxis. We also show the existence of a smallest positive solution and determine the monotonicity and continuity properties of the minimal solution map.
Virtual models in 3D digital reconstruction: detection and analysis of symmetry
Cultural Heritage (CH) artifacts generally possess symmetry of reflection, rotation, translation and glide reflection in their shape. Similarity measures are used to determine complex 3D models where symmetry is considered to be one of the similarity signatures. This work presents the methodology of detecting symmetry in 3D objects based on the three techniques: (1) Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors, (2) local surface discontinuity, and (3) pixel orientation. In this work, these methods have been modified suitably for the detection of symmetry in CH artifacts. Among these methods, it is found that the first two methods yield better performance on the symmetry signature estimation of 98 percent for complex models and up to 100% for primitive models. The execution time of the proposed methods is compared with the state-of-the-art approaches available in the literature. Three levels of random 3D models available in the internet repository are analyzed for efficiency, performance and robustness. At each level, the accuracy of the Eigenvalue method and the local discontinuity method is found to be better than the pixel orientation method. The modified algorithms have been tested for better performance with F -score, robustness, and execution time with 3D benchmark dataset and cultural heritage dataset available in the literature. Future work shall be extended by applying the symmetry features as constraints for the effective search of CH artifacts in digital repositories.
Matrices, Moments and Quadrature with Applications
This computationally oriented book describes and explains the mathematical relationships among matrices, moments, orthogonal polynomials, quadrature rules, and the Lanczos and conjugate gradient algorithms. The book bridges different mathematical areas to obtain algorithms to estimate bilinear forms involving two vectors and a function of the matrix. The first part of the book provides the necessary mathematical background and explains the theory.
