20 years of Electronic Commerce Research
2021
2021 marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of Electronic Commerce Research (ECR). The journal has changed substantially over its life, reflecting the wider changes in the tools and commercial focus of electronic commerce. ECR’s early focus was telecommunications and electronic commerce. After reorganization and new editorship in 2014, that focus expanded to embrace emerging tools, business models, and applications in electronic commerce, with an emphasis on the innovations and the vibrant growth of electronic commerce in Asia. Over this time, ECR’s impact and volume of publications have grown rapidly, and ECR is considered one of the premier journals in its discipline. This invited research summarizes the evolution of ECR’s research focus over its history.

Buyers' trust and mistrust in e-commerce platforms: a synthesizing literature review
2022
Electronic markets have grown substantially, and they are considered an effective form of retail in recent years. Despite such growth, lack of physical transactions between different parties, as well as users' concerns about their privacy and security of transactions in electronic commerce (e-commerce) platforms have jeopardized users' trust. Thus, trust as a key issue for reducing consumers' perceived risk and the successful promotion of e-commerce has motivated many researchers to study it. This paper created a comprehensive and up-to-date framework that synthesized the previous studies in the literature conducted on trust in e-commerce environments. A systematic literature review method was selected to achieve this aim. The initial search in 17 top-ranked information systems journals and conferences resulted in 129 papers that met the inclusion criteria. Then these studies underwent an in-depth examination to determine how trust had been conceptualized in e-commerce environments. Further, the theoretical bases in relation to trust in e-commerce contexts used in the literature were investigated. The study concludes with implications for practice and a critical agenda for future research.

Operationalizing Regulatory Focus in the Digital Age
2019
Regulatory focus theory (RFT) has been regarded as an important theory for understanding customer behavior in e-commerce; however, there is a significant gap between theoretical analysis with RFT and its practical applications. In particular, there is little research on how to identify the chronic regulatory focus of customers; as such, it is difficult to apply RFT in e-commerce operations. To fill this research gap, we propose an innovative method to operationalize customer regulatory focus from the affective dimension, leading to operationalized regulatory focus (ORF). In this regard, our study spearheads a new avenue of research on how social theories can be operationalized and applied in e-commerce operations. We first identify customers’ chronic regulatory focus (i.e., promotion focus or prevention focus) based on online review data using text mining, leading to an innovative method we refer to as “regulatory focus discovery.” Then, we validate the computed results on regulatory focus by surveying corresponding customers included in the same dataset. Finally, we evaluate the applicability of ORF via an econometric analysis. In this article, we demonstrate that it is possible to compute regulatory focus of specific customers for the purpose of assessing their purchasing tendency. The theoretical and practical implications of ORF are discussed.

Analysing impulse purchasing in cross-border electronic commerce
2020
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of product information on impulse purchases in a cross-border electronic commerce (CBEC) setting from the perspective of cue stimulation.Design/methodology/approachThis study proposes a research model of impulse purchases in CBEC based on the cue utilization theory and Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) model. The research model was tested using covariance-based structural equation modelling. Data were collected from the consumers of a popular CBEC platform in China.FindingsA high-quality product description has a significant positive effect on concentration but not on curiosity and autotelic experience. A high-quality product display has a significant positive effect on concentration, curiosity and autotelic experience. High-quality product content has a significant positive effect on curiosity and autotelic experience but not on concentration. Curiosity and autotelic experience both have a significant positive effect on impulse purchases; however, concentration has no such effect on an impulse purchase. Curiosity and autotelic experience have a full mediation effect between product display and impulse purchases and between product content and impulse purchases, respectively.Originality/valueThis study integrates the S-O-R model and cue utilization theory to construct a theoretical model of product information-flow experience-impulse purchases. According to the model, we can understand how product information influences consumers' impulse purchases in CBEC.
