Quality Lessons in Traditional and Electronic Textbook
The aim of this study is to verify and assess the quality of lessons in traditional and electronic textbook on general standards of textbooks quality. The method of theoretical analysis and content analysis was used. For the purpose of analyzing the contents of the sample we took teaching unit Measures and measurement from two textbooks: the traditional and the electronic. The electronic textbook, which has been the subject of research, is of quality and meets the standards of textbook quality.
Knowledge Annotation for Intelligent Textbooks
With the increased popularity of electronic textbooks, there is a growing interest in developing a new generation of “intelligent textbooks,” which have the ability to guide readers according to their learning goals and current knowledge. Intelligent textbooks extend regular textbooks by integrating machine-manipulable knowledge, and the most popular type of integrated knowledge is a list of relevant concepts mentioned in the textbooks. With these concepts, multiple intelligent operations, such as content linking, content recommendation, or student modeling, can be performed. However, existing automatic keyphrase extraction methods, even supervised ones, cannot deliver sufficient accuracy to be practically useful in this task. Manual annotation by experts has been demonstrated to be a preferred approach for producing high-quality labeled data for training supervised models. However, most researchers in the education domain still consider the concept annotation process as an ad-hoc activity rather than a carefully executed task, which can result in low-quality annotated data. Using the annotation of concepts for the Introduction to Information Retrieval textbook as a case study, this paper presents a knowledge engineering method to obtain reliable concept annotations. As demonstrated by the data we collected, the inter-annotator agreement gradually increased along with our procedure, and the concept annotations we produced led to better results in document linking and student modeling tasks. The contributions of our work include a validated knowledge engineering procedure, a codebook for technical concept annotation, and a set of concept annotations for the target textbook, which could be used as a gold standard in further intelligent textbook research.
Printed Textbooks Versus Electronic Textbooks: A Study on the Preference of Students of Gulf University in Kingdom of Bahrain
Technology has become an indispensable phenomenon in the contemporary era which has its impact in every walk of life and education is not an exception to this. The tech-savvy students of today have easily adopted the electronic textbooks as a replacement of printed textbooks owing to its ease of use, cost effectiveness and accessibility. Varied views on the students’ preference of the specified format of textbooks have laid the platform for more formal and fo-cused research pursuits these days globally. Therefore, a research to differenti-ate the advantages and disadvantages of both the formats and the reasons that are primary to opt for the one over the other at a regional level is very much the need of the hour. The study aimed to find out the interest and preference that prevailed in the minds of students of Gulf University, Kingdom of Bah-rain, with respect to the adopting of electronic textbooks over the printed text-books as this kind of study has been carried out much limited in this region. A list of questions was made in order to find out the pros and cons of the printed textbooks and electronic textbooks so that the valid reasons for the preference could be identified. The study adopted a quantitative research design and the questionnaire as a research tool to collect the data. The result affirms that most of the students are familiar with both the formats of textbooks and are more comfortable using electronic textbooks and have expressed their willingness to a complete shift from printed textbooks to electronic textbooks. Nevertheless, the findings make it clear that the students opt for electronic textbooks depend-ing upon the nature of the subject or academic discipline.
Working with digital textbooks or printed materials: A study with boys and girls on conditional probability
The integration of dynamic visualisations, feedback formats and digital tools is characteristic of state-of-the-art digital mathematics textbooks. Although there already is evidence that students can benefit from these technology-based features in their learning, the direct comparison between the use of a comparable digital and printed resource has not yet been sufficiently investigated. We address this research gap by contrasting the use of an enriched digital textbook that includes these features and comparable printed materials without them. To do so, we investigate the achievement of 314 students in a pretest-posttest control group design in a five-hour series of lessons on conditional probability. Using the Rasch model and mixed ANOVA, the results indicate that students can benefit from digital textbook features, especially compared to the use of comparable printed materials. In line with other studies on mathematical achievement and the use of digital resources, our study also shows differences between boys and girls. It seems that particularly girls benefit from the use of the digital textbook, whereas, for the boys, it does not seem to make a difference what kind of resources they use. The group and gender differences are discussed against the background of other studies considering that, especially in Bayesian situations, the way statistical situations are visualised can be decisive for a student’s performance.
Electronic Physical Education Textbook: Effective or Not? Experimental Study
It is very important for a modern specialist to be aware of information technolo-gies and effectively apply them in their professional activities. Thus, the use of electronic learning tools contributes to the motivation of students and allows them to more deeply master the learning material through video and audio files com-pared to a paper textbook. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effective-ness of the introduction of the experimental electronic textbook in physical educa-tion classes. The proposed textbook consists of 7 modules. The goal, objectives, as well as the tasks for their implementation and test tasks to consolidate the ma-terial learned, have been developed for each module. During January-May 2019, at Aktobe Regional State University named after K. Zhubanov, there was a peda-gogical experiment to introduce an electronic textbook in physical education. The experiment involved 28 young men. The results showed that the introduction of an electronic textbook in the experimental group has a more positive effect on physical fitness compared to the control group.
Creation of an Electronic Textbook for University Students
The need for e-learning in modern Russia is caused by the rapid development of informatization, digitalization, information and communication technologies, the creation of a global environment for mutual integration of cultures and disciplines, as well as the formation of open continuous education, which is the basis of a post-industrial (information) society. These processes stimulate an active search for creative educational practices that meet the requirements of the information society. A modern specialist must have a certain amount of knowledge that will allow him to learn constantly, improve his skills and abilities, self-develop and self-actualize in order to keep up with the time of changes in the information society. In the framework of the modern educational paradigm, the student is considered as a subject of knowledge, not an object of pedagogical influence. In the early - mid-2010s, this is actively promoted by electronic learning (e-learning, EL), which should be used in various educational organizations. E-learning allows integrating into the world scientific community, becoming subjects of interaction between cultures, including the exchange of spiritual values. Implementation of EL is one of the key tasks in the context of modernization of national education. The term \"electronic learning\" is translated into Russian in various ways. The most popular options are: \"distance learning/education\", \"mobile learning\", and \"virtual learning\". The European Commission interprets \"e-learning\" as \"using new multimedia and Internet technologies to improve the quality of learning by improving access to resources and services, as well as remote knowledge sharing and collaboration\". In this study, the concept of \"e-learning\" will correspond to the phrase \"electronic learning\". This is an educational process based on interactive electronic means of storing and providing information: the Internet, corporate networks, and CDs.
Retailers' Differentiation Strategy and Pricing in the Rental Market of Digital Content: A Case of E-Textbooks
Offering digital content for renting has become popular among online retailers. Following the trend, textbook retailers have introduced e-textbook rental programs which satisfy students' needs to reduce the cost of textbooks. Under the e-textbook rental model, retailers have homogeneous digital products and delivery channel. Therefore, they need specific differentiation strategies to distinguish themselves in the competition. In this study we aim to investigate the key factors of retailers' differentiation strategy and their impact on retailers' price advantage in the market. Our horizontal model shows that factors such as service quality are essential for the leading retailer to maintain price advantage in the competition. We also carry out an empirical study on service design and consumers' input by analyzing a unique data set of 151 e-textbooks from two major textbook rental retailers Amazon and Chegg. Our results show that factors including service flexibility, earliest return time, consumers' rating, and e-textbook selling price play a significant role in retailers' pricing differentiation strategy. Overall, our research provides useful managerial insights and operational policies for online textbook rental retailers.
Addressing the Major Information Technology Challenges of Electronic Textbooks
Electronic textbooks (e-Textbooks) are digitized forms of textbooks which are envisioned to replace existing paper-based textbooks. After intensive literature review, together with interview results, our study has figured out four major IT-based challenges associated with e-Textbooks in its pursuit to replace the traditional textbooks, namely standardizing format of content, improving service reliability, improving quality and accuracy of content, and improving readability. This paper also provides an extensive review on how these challenges have been approached using existing e-Textbook solutions, such as N-Screen services, cloud computing, open market place, P2P between devices and HTML5. For each solution, we develop a usage scenario in which users apply the aforementioned technologies to interact with e-Textbooks and share contents among themselves. This article aims to provide a strong foundation for further investigations into the development and distribution of e-Textbooks for eventual successful adoption of e-Textbooks in school education.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Distance Learning in Universities
Distance learning has always been of interest to researchers and scientists since its inception. In the current environment of the modern world, this type of training is becoming increasingly popular despite the large number of its opponents. Of course, it can not be called absolutely perfect, because it requires the availability of impeccable technical equipment of educational institutions, uninterrupted Internet, a perfectly working portal and an appropriate platform for such training. The Article is devoted to the description of the advantages and disadvantages of learning in higher education. In the context of modern realities, distance learning is spreading faster and faster in all areas of our life, in particular in the educational process. However, it cannot completely replace traditional learning. There is no doubt that distance learning has a number of advantages, but in view of the lack of uninterrupted Internet outside of large cities, and sometimes its complete absence, there are many problems regarding the organization of this type of training. It should also be noted that distance learning requires a lot of self-discipline of a person and the ability to independently study a particular subject. Therefore, before making a decision to completely replace traditional distance learning, it is necessary to weigh all the pros and cons, remembering that distance learning cannot be perfect enough and that it cannot be a worthy replacement for traditional learning.
