Risk and safety analysis of nuclear systems
2011,2012
\"The book has been developed in conjunction with NERS 462, a course offered every year to seniors and graduate students in the University of Michigan NERS program. The first half of the book covers the principles of risk analysis, the techniques used to develop and update a reliability data base, the reliability of multi-component systems, Markov methods used to analyze the unavailability of systems with repairs, fault trees and event trees used in probabilistic risk assessments (PRAs), and failure modes of systems. All of this material is general enough that it could be used in non-nuclear applications, although there is an emphasis placed on the analysis of nuclear systems. The second half of the book covers the safety analysis of nuclear energy systems, an analysis of major accidents and incidents that occurred in commercial nuclear plants, applications of PRA techniques to the safety analysis of nuclear power plants (focusing on a major PRA study for five nuclear power plants), practical PRA examples, and emerging techniques in the structure of dynamic event trees and fault trees that can provide a more realistic representation of complex sequences of events. The book concludes with a discussion on passive safety features of advanced nuclear energy systems under development and approaches taken for risk-informed regulations for nuclear plants\"--
Fuel and combustion systems safety : what you don't know can kill you!
\"There are code books and there is manufacturer literature but prior to this book nothing brings it all together and explains the basics in a comprehensive yet simple manner. If you own or operate any kind of boiler, oven, furnace, or large heating equipment you need to read this book and understand the issues. Topics included in the book include case studies of explosions through the years, top combustion systems hazards, and hazard recognition and abatement issues. The book also provides an introduction to combustion and combustion equipment followed by fuel trains and safety systems\"-- Provided by publisher.

2012,2011,2013
\"This book provides guidance on characterizing, recognizing, and responding to warning signs to help avoid process incidents and injuries before they occur. The guidance can be used by both process safety management (PSM) professionals in evaluating their processes and PSM systems as well as for operators who are often the frontline defense against process incidents. Warning signs may consist of process deviations or upsets, instrumentation warnings or alarms, past operating history and incidents, observable problems such as corrosion or unusual odors, audit results indicating procedures are not being followed, or a number of other indicators. Filled with photos and practical tips, this book will turn anyone in a process plant into a hazard lookout and will help prevent potential incidents before they turn into catastrophic events\"--

Chemical engineering-Safety measures
2020
The revised and updated seventh edition of this book contains the most recent information on the selection, use, and care of chemical protective clothing, such as protective gloves, suits, and other garments. The seventh edition includes new selection recommendations, new materials and chemicals tested, and updated information on existing products. This accessible guide also contains the popular color-coded selection grid. The grid system indicates which materials offer protection against specific chemicals, and which do not. Selecting the most appropriate chemical protective clothing is essential for the prevention of illnesses and injures from hazardous chemical exposure, especially where other control measures are not feasible. Written by noted experts on the topic, the book has been thoroughly revised to reflect the most recent advances in the field.
Killed by a traffic engineer : shattering the delusion that science underlies our transportation system
\"Fixing the carnage on our roadways requires a change in mindset and a dramatic transformation of transportation. This goes for traffic engineers in particular because they are still the ones in charge of our streets. In Killed by a Traffic Engineer, civil engineering professor Wes Marshall shines a spotlight on how little science there is behind the way that our streets are engineered, which leaves safety as an afterthought. While traffic engineers are not trying to cause deliberate harm to anyone, he explains, they are guilty of creating a transportation system whose designs remain largely based on plausible, but unproven, conjecture. Killed by a Traffic Engineer is ultimately hopeful about what is possible once we shift our thinking and demand streets engineered for the safety of people, both outside and inside of cars. It will make you look at your city and streets--and traffic engineers--in a new light and inspire you to take action\"-- Provided by publisher.

Chemical and related technologies
2018,2019
There is much industry guidance on implementing engineering projects and a similar amount of guidance on Process Safety Management (PSM). However, there is a gap in transferring the key deliverables from the engineering group to the operations group, where PSM is implemented. This book provides the engineering and process safety deliverables for each project phase along with the impacts to the project budget, timeline and the safety and operability of the delivered equipment.
Safety in design
Sales Handles: Describes and makes a case for the use of High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors as better and safer reactors over the currently used Light Water Reactors - Describes the application of the concept of intrinsic continuous process safeguarding in the chemical industry to other fields of society as well, including transportation, farming, the building trade, and leisure - The concept of intrinsic process safeguarding in the chemical industry comprises that the protection of reaction systems is based on their chemical and physical properties and is therefore not endangered by human errors or failures of instrumentation - Includes the description of approximately 70 accidents/incidents - Teaches the reader where applicable to integrate the safety of a design into the design itself - Recommends safe nuclear reactors Market description: Chemical, Civil, Mechanical, Risk, Safety Engineers, Chemists, Physicists, Managers (technical, production, business), Process Safety professionals, HSE professionals Government personnel involved in regulating and overseeing chemical plants and procedures as well as in traffic, storage, production etc Insurers, especially those dealing with catastrophic loss potentials-- Provided by publisher.
