ISO-9001 implementation and critical success factors of the Jordanian consulting engineering firms
PurposeThis paper aims at studying the level of implementation of ISO 9001 in Jordanian consulting engineering firms and to what extent does the implementation effectiveness affect the success of the construction projects. Moreover, the paper seeks to identify the Critical Success Factors (CSFs) that directly influence the ISO 9001 effectiveness in Jordanian consulting engineering firms.Design/methodology/approachA questionnaire was constructed and distributed to a sample of 125 employees from six ISO 9001-consulting firms. After collecting the data, exploratory factor analysis was utilized to validate the latent constructs (CSFs, ISO 9001 Effectiveness, and Firm Performance).FindingsThe findings suggest that firms experience a high level of ISO 9001 effectiveness. Moreover, among the five identified CSFs; employee attributes, external environmental pressure and quality system attribute had a significant impact on the ISO 9001 effectiveness, while internal motivation and firm attributes were insignificant.Originality/valueThe significance of this study lies in exploring such topic in the developing countries, since most of current studies were focused on developed contexts such as the USA and UK. Therefore, this research acts as a response to calls in the current literature regarding considering different industries and contexts.
Diversity in Engineering
This report contains fifteen presentations from a workshop on best practices in managing diversity, hosted by the NAE Committee on Diversity in the Engineering Workforce on October 29-30, 2001. NAE (National Academy of Engineering) president William Wulf, IBM vice-president Nicholas Donofrio, and Ford vice-president James Padilla address the business case for diversity, and representatives of leading engineering employers discuss how to increase the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women and underrepresented minorities in engineering careers. Other speakers focus on mentoring, globalization, affirmative action backlash, and dealing with lawsuits. Corporate engineering and human resources managers attended the workshop and discussed diversity issues faced by corporations that employ engineers. Summaries of the discussions are also included in the report.
Assessment and Ranking of Criteria for Engineering Firm Performance Using RII, Entropy Weight Method, and TOPSIS
Engineering consultants and design firms are central to the success of construction projects. However, the systematic evaluation of their performance in the Saudi Arabian context remains methodologically fragmented and empirically underdeveloped. Existing prequalification frameworks rely predominantly on administrative criteria and single-method ranking approaches that cannot adequately differentiate between high- and low-performing firms. To address this gap, the study proceeds in two distinct parts. Part I—Literature Review: A PRISMA-compliant systematic literature review across five major academic databases was conducted to map the existing evidence base, identify three substantive gaps in the Saudi and GCC engineering firm evaluation literature, and derive a consensus-based set of 29 performance criteria grouped into seven dimensions. This review constitutes an independent contribution: it establishes the gap that motivates the empirical work and provides the criterion framework on which that work is built. Part II—Practical Application: A structured questionnaire was administered to 288 construction professionals in Saudi Arabia (Cronbach’s α = 0.936), and the collected data were analyzed through a hybrid RII–Shannon Entropy Weighting (EWM)–TOPSIS pipeline that produced a Composite Priority Index (CPI) for each criterion, enabling a stable and discriminating ranking that integrates subjective expert consensus with objective distributional information. The main finding revealed that five criteria attained Very High Priority status (CPI > 0.70): Supervisory Experience (CPI = 0.740), Engineers’ Capability Index (CPI = 0.717), License Class (CPI = 0.709), Client Satisfaction Index (CPI = 0.708), and Average Delay Time (CPI = 0.705). These top-ranked criteria collectively center on technical leadership, regulatory standing, client-reported outcomes, and schedule reliability, indicating that procurement decisions should prioritize demonstrable competence over structural size or geographic footprint. The consistently lower importance of physical branch networks and headquarters location further suggests that remote management capabilities and digital coordination tools are reshaping performance expectations under Saudi Vision 2030. The Quality Indicators dimension achieved the highest mean CPI across all seven dimensions. The findings provide actionable evidence for procurement authorities, regulatory bodies, and engineering firms seeking to strengthen performance-evaluation practices in the Saudi construction sector.
Atelier Ten : invisible architecture
Atelier Ten is an international engineering practice based in London but with offices all over the world. Founded in 1990 they specialise in sustainable design and have worked on a number of major projects alongside such architects as Grimshaw, Michael Hopkins, Wilkinson Eyre and Robert Stern. Amongst their most famous projects are Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, Tour Carpe Diem in France, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Federation Square in Melbourne. This book gives a detailed overview of the practice through a series of highly illustrated, thematic essays and covers all their major works since their foundation. It will appeal to engineers and architects alike.
Productivity in motion: a structuration theory lens and inductive analysis of MTM in engineering consulting firms
PurposeThis paper explores the impact of multiple team membership (MTM) on the productivity of team members in engineering consulting firms. MTM refers to employees participating concurrently in multiple teams, a concept closely linked to projectification. Despite the fact that this concept can enhance collaboration, it also introduces coordination challenges that may negatively affect productivity.Design/methodology/approachThrough an inductive approach involving 12 semi-structured interviews with engineering consulting professionals specializing in water and energy infrastructure projects, this paper examines the factors affecting team member productivity in an MTM setting. Following the interviews, a Delphi technique was employed, engaging 16 experts to rank the factors and sub-factors identified from the interview data. This two-stage approach ensured a comprehensive and validated assessment of productivity factors.FindingsThis study develops 8 factors process model grounded in structuration theory to explain the socio-technical mechanisms by which multiple team membership shapes productivity outcomes in engineering consulting firms specialized in water and energy infrastructure projects. Key findings surface micro-foundations, tensions in technology provisions, planning processes, and career development that inform theoretical advances and practical improvements.Originality/valueThis research contributes empirically insights into managing MTM in expert service contexts. Applying Giddens' structuration theory, this study reveals how agency and structures shape productivity across organizational, team, and individual levels. In practice, this study provides recommendations for improving productivity within projectified environments, mainly for team members working in an MTM environment in engineering consulting firms specializing in water and energy infrastructure projects.
