2020
Objective: The objective of the article is to determine the effect of governance structure components (audit committee presence, board size adequacy, and board leadership) on SMEs’ performance and the moderating effect of chief executive officer (CEO) tenure on the influence of governance structure on SMEs’ performance in Ghanaian context. Research Design Methods: We sampled 145 respondents from selected SMEs in the Ghanaian manufacturing, telecommunication, and financial sectors for the study. All selected participants completed questionnaires on governance structure and shared their informed perception of the enterprises’ performance. The data gathered were analysed using multiple regression analysis and Hayes’ process macro. Findings: The results indicated that board leadership, the presence of an audit committee, and board size adequacy do not significantly influence SMEs’ performance. The results further revealed that CEO tenure is a significant negative moderator to the influence of the governance structure on SMEs’ performance. Implications Recommendations: Future studies must focus on how SMEs in Ghana can put CEOs and board succession plans in place so as to ensure creativity/innovation. Contribution Value Added: This study contributes to the body of knowledge relating to the governance structure’s influence on various indicators of business performance of SMEs in Ghana. Therefore, this study sought to assess the contribution of corporate governance structures to the performance of SMEs in Ghana. This would help SMEs to know which aspects of their governance structure should be strengthened to effectively contribute to their success.

Determinants of SMEs' performance: evidence from European countries
2019
This article aims to examine how certain economic and social factors influence short- and long-term performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). SMEs' performance is defined by using the value added (VA) by SMEs, as a percent of the total VA by enterprises. The study targets European Union (EU) countries selected by the authors following a cluster analysis procedure. In order to obtain short- and long-term influences, an analysis that carries out three types of tests is conducted: testing stationarity, testing cointegration and testing causality between the indicators identified as influencing factors and the variable measuring the performance of SMEs. The novelty and originality of this research are defined in terms of addressing the performance of SMEs from a new perspective, using an econometric basis in a macroeconomic view. From an econometric perspective, the results are among the most varied, both in the long- and short-term, however they also have a correspondent economic explanation.

Social Enterprise Performance
2021
Market orientation has been presented as an important predictor of business performance, and it is presumed to contribute to long-term success in both profit-oriented and non-profit enterprises. Similarly, entrepreneurial orientation is a concept that has been widely applied to business firms but has not been empirically tested in social enterprises. Moreover, the literature does not present a widely accepted and tested conceptual model relating entrepreneurial orientation, market orientation and performance, in the realm of social enterprises. In order to fill this gap, this research assesses how these strategic orientations affect social and economic performance in the setting of social enterprises. Structural equation modeling was used as a means to analyze the hypothesized relationships. After testing the model on a sample of 805 Portuguese social enterprises, the findings show that both social entrepreneurship and market orientations significantly impact social performance. The results also indicate that market orientation mediates the effect of social entrepreneurship orientation on the performance of social enterprises.

PurposeThe performance of business enterprises is an impetus to every nation’s growth and development, as they constitute a multitude of businesses in most countries in the world. While ethical crises in the workplace are causing serious depletion in organizational performance and, in some cases, leading to total bankruptcy and the collapse of business in a developing country. This study aims to empirically examine the interaction effect of Islamic work ethics (IWEs) on the linkage between organization culture (OC) and enterprise performance (EP).Design/methodology/approachThe survey method collected data from 531 managers of firms in the SME category of enterprises, using validated measurement instruments adapted from previous studies, and the data were quantitatively analyzed with Smart PLS SEM.FindingsThe results indicate that OC has a positive and significant effect on EP. The study also found that IWEs had a strong positive and significant impact on EP. The investigation revealed a significant effect of IWEs on the OC impact on EP. Therefore, we concluded that increased IWE practice will enhance the OC impact on EP.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the nexus of OC and EP as the first to investigate the interaction effect of IWE in an African context. Furthermore, the study suggests that if enterprise managers can exhibit Islamic work values, it will communicate and stimulate workers’ positive attitudes toward the organization. The creation of a harmonious and unethical behavior-free workplace environment would lead to improved enterprise performance. We presented theoretical and practical implications, along with recommendations for future research.

2023
The digital trade ecosystem’s development relies on the growth of cross-border e-commerce platforms. To ensure the continued growth of China’s digital trade, it is crucial to consider the service capabilities of digital platforms and the digital transformation capabilities of cross-border e-commerce firms. This study explores the impact of these factors on the performance of cross-border e-commerce companies, with digital transformation capability acting as a mediator. Empirical research reveals that the service capability of digital platforms is composed of supply chain communication and cost control abilities, which partially mediate the relationship between digital platform serviceability and cross-border e-commerce enterprise performance. Moreover, both the service capabilities of digital platforms and the digital transformation capabilities of cross-border e-commerce companies have a positive and significant impact on enterprise performance.

Research on the Asymmetric Influence of Non-R&D Subsidy and R&D Subsidy on Digital Enterprises Performance
2024
Digital technology innovation has become the core element driving economic development. Digital enterprise innovation improves performance, which is of great significance for effectively releasing digital dividends and achieving high-quality economic development. Based on the panel data of listed enterprises in China’s digital industry in 2008 and 2021, this study uses the two-way fixed effect model to discuss the influence and mechanism of government subsidies on the digital enterprises performance (DEP). Results show that: first, non-research and development (R&D) subsidies can improve the DEP effectively, however, R&D subsidies have a significant inverted U-shaped effect on DEP, and which show a marginal decreasing trend with the improvement of DEP. Second, mechanism tests show that technological innovation plays a mediating role in the process of non-R&D and R&D subsidies affecting DEP. State-owned property rights strengthen the positive impact of R&D subsidies on DEP. Third, heterogeneity tests show that lowering financing constraints enhances the impact of non-R&D and R&D subsidies on DEP, respectively. The improvement of corporate governance and R&D investment strengthens the promotion effect of non-R&D subsidies on DEP. Furthermore, improvements in network infrastructure strengthen the inverted U-shaped relationship between R&D subsidies and DEP. This study provides a valuable reference for the formulation of high-quality development incentive policies for digital enterprises.

2021
The small and medium enterprise (SME) sector plays an important role in the development of the local, regional, and global economy. This study seeks to examine the relationships among several factors that are claimed to influence the performance of SMEs. Internal and external environmental factors, as well as the moderating role of gender on the research variables, are empirically examined. A survey of 142 entrepreneurs in the northern region of Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, using convenience sampling was conducted. Path analysis was used to test the research model using the Partial Least Squares (PLS) model by Warp PLS (ver. 7). Results suggest that both internal and external success factors influence enterprise performance. Based on statistically significant relationships, entrepreneurial orientation, human capital, and entrepreneur goals and motives (internal factors), as well as economic factors, socio-cultural factors, and legal and administrative factors (external factors) are influencing SME performance. Additionally, results indicate that SMEs almost perform at similar levels regardless of the gender of the SME owner. Gender is found to moderate the influence of economic factors, and legal and administrative factors on performance. There is no indication that gender moderates the influence of the rest of the factors on the performance. Such finding is surprising given the context of the study, i.e. Saudi Arabia was traditionally considered as a conservative male-dominated society. AcknowledgmentThis study was supported and funded by the research sector of Arab Open University – Kuwait Branch under decision number 21002. Authors would like to thank the National Entrepreneurship Institute “RIYADAH”, Tabuk branch, KSA for their support in data collection.
