In recent years, there has been a growing awareness that innovation plays the key role in the success and the functioning of organizations. This publication reveals an interdisciplinary dimension, because it addresses the increasing need for sustainable innovation that combines economic, environmental and social elements. Its aim is to present the international exchange of ideas, research results and practical experience in the field broadly understood as innovation, to highlight the importance of innovation management in a competitive, global economy, and to discuss the current problems related to innovation and entrepreneurship.
In the economy reliant on innovation of various organizations, cross-sectoral co-operation is of paramount importance. It allows to achieve synergy between entities with diverse resources and competences in generating innovative projects. Originally, analysis of cross-sectoral relations focused on building links between business and science – in particular, the realms of research and development. This is the most obvious system by means of which the economy is fed with innovative concepts and their implementation solutions. Over time, the public sector too has begun to be perceived not only as an entity that creates economic regulations, but also as a real partner in the process of shaping economic development: it provides innovative projects, which are then commercialised in business. Therefore, the role of the public sector is not only to legislate, but also to conduct joint actions with the innovative business sector in order to stimulate local development of innovative projects. This publication will address the so-called triple helix (the most effective process of generating innovation): the system of co-operation between business, science, and government that contributes to the creation of innovative economy.

Exploring senior engineering students’ engineering identity: the impact of practice-oriented learning experiences

BackgroundEngineering identity reflects students' acceptance and recognition of engineering, which has a great influence on their willingness to enter and stay in the engineering field. Existing studies have shown that curricular and co-curricular practice-oriented experiences may be helpful for developing students’ engineering identity. However, the actual impact of various practice-oriented learning experiences remained to be further examined. This quantitative study aims to explore the impact of three types of practice-oriented learning experiences (capstone experiences, technological innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, and engineering-related internships) in the development of engineering talents' engineering identity. A theoretical framework of engineering identity, which consists of three dimensions, that is, Interest, Performance/Competence and Recognition, was adopted to guide the research.ResultsThrough responses from 160 senior engineering students at a leading research intensive Chinese university, the study explored the relationships between engagement in practice-oriented learning experiences and engineering identity. Senior capstone design was found to be associated positively with students' development of engineering identity and recognition by others. Participating in two or more technological innovation and entrepreneurship competitions associated positively with students' development of engineering identity, performance/competence and recognition. Meanwhile, internships did not show any statistically significant effect on engineering identity. Moreover, by analyzing the potential mediating effect, we found that recognition played a complete intermediary role between senior capstone design and engineering identity. In addition, recognition and performance/competence mediated the relationship between twice or more technological innovation and entrepreneurship competitions and engineering identity.ConclusionsThese findings add to our current understanding about the role of different practice-oriented learning activities on students’ development of engineering identity. These findings point to the importance of learning activities, including technological innovation and entrepreneurship competitions and senior capstone design, on the development of engineering identity. Moreover, the results highlighted the important role of students’ engagement in multiple authentic engineering projects throughout the curriculum and their gaining recognitions through these project experiences. Based on these findings, practical suggestions are proposed to help nurture students’ engineering identity. In addition, future qualitative investigations about the underlying mechanisms are recommended to facilitate the understanding of students’ development of engineering identity.

Joseph A. Schumpeter suggested two models about the evolution process of capitalist societies. The article aims to specify the essential roles of these models in discussions about the modern firm theories and the development of integrated economic growth and international trade theory. In this context, this article aims to evaluate these developments and point out their role in bridging the gap between micro-economics and macroeconomics. The Schumpeterian framework, as a bridge, provides us a very productive base to discuss the connections among entrepreneurs, firms, innovation, economic growth, and international trade.

Advancements in technology and digitalisation have paved the way for multidimensional possibilities in the availability, extraction, and implantation of data. Consequently, the application of big data in understanding the spectra of different fields of knowledge has been evolving. Entrepreneurship research is one such developing area. Within this field, research has called for the advancement and application of methodological approaches to understand entrepreneurial phenomena. This study attempts to respond to this call by addressing how big data can be applied to entrepreneurship research. Therefore, the use of big data analysis and analytics in entrepreneurship research was explored and several theoretical perspectives and methodological possibilities for applying big data to entrepreneurship research were investigated. Furthermore, benefits, challenges, and ethical considerations were considered with a focus on how to navigate these challenges and implement them. The study concludes with future directions for emerging technologies that can be adopted in entrepreneurship research. Finally, recommendations are offered to researchers on how to apply big data not only to collect information but also to analyse and present it in a meaningful way.

A Dynamic Network Measure of Technological Change

This article outlines a network approach to the study of technological change. We propose that new inventions reshape networks of interlinked technologies by shifting inventors’ attention to or away from the knowledge on which those inventions build. Using this approach, we develop novel indexes of the extent to which a new invention consolidates or destabilizes existing technology streams. We apply these indexes in analyses of university research commercialization and find that, although federal research funding pushes campuses to create inventions that are more destabilizing, deeper commercial ties lead them to produce technologies that consolidate the status quo. By quantifying the effects that new technologies have on their predecessors, the indexes we propose allow patent-based studies of innovation to capture conceptually important phenomena that are not detectable with established measures. The measurement approach presented here offers empirical insights that support theoretical development in studies of innovation, entrepreneurship, technology strategy, science policy, and social network theory.

Entrepreneurship research is on the rise but many questions about the fundamental nature of entrepreneurship still exist. We argue that entrepreneurship is about experimentation; the probabilities of success are low, extremely skewed, and unknowable until an investment is made. At a macro level, experimentation by new firms underlies the Schumpeterian notion of creative destruction. However, at a micro level, investment and continuation decisions are not always made in a competitive Darwinian contest. Instead, a few investors make decisions that are impacted by incentive, agency, and coordination problems, often before a new idea even has a chance to compete in a market. We contend that costs and constraints on the ability to experiment alter the type of organizational form surrounding innovation and influence when innovation is more likely to occur. These factors not only govern how much experimentation is undertaken in the economy, but also the trajectory of experimentation, with potentially very deep economic consequences.

This article contributes to the study of process innovation as a growth strategy for SMEs, enriching and complementing the well-researched debate about product innovation. Thus, underresearched process innovation strategies are analyzed, and their antecedents and innovative performance implications explored. The results show that process innovation strategy is mainly shaped by the acquisition of embodied knowledge, which acts as a key mechanism for countering firms' weak internal capabilities. As process innovation is mainly production oriented, performance consequences are measured using the production process indicators of cost reduction, flexibility and capacity improvement, avoiding traditional misguided measures based on sales, which are more product oriented. Drawing on information for 2,412 firms taken from Spanish CIS data, our results suggest that R&D efforts are not positively related to production process performance, but that the latter is improved by the synchronous co-adoption of organizational and technological innovation. SMEs conducting a process innovation strategy rely heavily on the acquisition of external sources of knowledge in order to complement their weak internal innovative capabilities, and their pattern of innovation shows clear-cut differences from traditional R&D-based product innovation strategies. The article uses a resource-based view framework to generate hypotheses.
