Ethnomathematics: Mathematics in Batik Solo
All people in the world have their culture in living the life. These culture is built of activities they do every day in a long time. Batik is one of traditional art of Indonesia's cultural heritage. It has many varieties, one of them is Batik Solo. It also has many motifs. Ethnomathematics is a study about culture and mathematics concepts. This research is to explore Batik Solo and to find the mathematics concept in it. Using ethnography method, the data collection uses principles in ethnography namely observation, interview, and documentation. The results of the research in this article are twofold. Some Batik Solo motifs contain mathematical elements, especially geometric material, namely the principles of translation and reflection. Besides, that there are vertical and horizontal lines as well as perpendicular and parallel lines included. The mathematical concept, especially the geometry used in the making of Batik, is the use of the tessellation or tiling principle. The tessellation principle is the basis for the development of the Solo batik motifs.
Sampan Kajang: the orang laut's maritime cultural heritage in the East Coast of Sumatra
This article aims to analyze the history and existence of sampan kajang as the Orang Laut's maritime cultural heritage in East Coast Coast of Sumatra. The results of the research showed that the sampan kajang had existed in the East Coast Coast of Sumatra since the 7th century AD. The archaeologis findings in the area of Kayu Agung Komering Hilir, South Sumatra showed similarities in the name and shape of the sampan kajang used by the Orang Laut in East Coast of Sumatra that we still can watch now. Before the 1980s, sampan kajang was home to the Orang Laut in living nomadic lives at sea. All activities of family members, like fishing, cooking, eating, sleeping, sexual activity to birth, are carried out on a sampan kajang. But now almost all of Orang Laut the East Coast of Sumatra is dwelling on the land. The integral function of the sampan kajang as their line of life has moved to the stage house in coastal. In the Lingga Archipelago, the sampan kajang is currently only used when they will go bekelam for a short time. Orang Laut Duano in Riau and Jambi, even only remember sampan kajang as a reminder of their ancestors'. Modernization further alienates and obscures the existence of sampan kajang as an endangered identity and cultural heritage of the Orang Laut in the East Coast of Sumatra.

There are seven types basic of motifs in batik besurek, one of them is the Arabic calligraphy motif. In this paper explained the development of the pattern of the Arabic calligraphy and rafflesia flower motif in batik besurek. The pattern development is done by applying the fractal principles. The results is a new motif of batik besurek that are expected to enrich the style, shape, diversity of motifs, and enhance the beauty and selling value of the batik itself.
Physical Quality of Creative Economic Space on Cultural Tourism Areas in Java Island
Java is an island with the most populous population in Indonesia. With the potential of cultural diversity in Java, creative economic activities on this island need the development. The local wisdom and cultural events are reflecting the creativity of the community and can provide economic value to the community. The physical quality of creative economic spaces that can become generators in some cultural tourism areas does not have functional quality space. To support the preservation of cultural heritage and the development of superior cultural tourism areas, the quality of an excellent creative economic space is necessary. The aim of this study is to identify physical quality of space for creative economic activities or events. The method of this study used a qualitative descriptive method. Results of this study provide an overview that cultural village in Semarang and Banyuwangi have five potential creative economic activities: traditional architecture, culinary, crafts, music, and performing arts. The physical quality of these two creative economic spaces is still limited because of the limited economic capacity of the community in providing the spaces. They are shaping and realizing space with utilizes natural conditions (green open spaces or spaces among tall trees) and local material (bamboo).
The hysteresis of the Antarctic Ice Sheet
More than half of Earth’s freshwater resources are held by the Antarctic Ice Sheet, which thus represents by far the largest potential source for global sea-level rise under future warming conditions 1 . Its long-term stability determines the fate of our coastal cities and cultural heritage. Feedbacks between ice, atmosphere, ocean, and the solid Earth give rise to potential nonlinearities in its response to temperature changes. So far, we are lacking a comprehensive stability analysis of the Antarctic Ice Sheet for different amounts of global warming. Here we show that the Antarctic Ice Sheet exhibits a multitude of temperature thresholds beyond which ice loss is irreversible. Consistent with palaeodata 2 we find, using the Parallel Ice Sheet Model 3 – 5 , that at global warming levels around 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, West Antarctica is committed to long-term partial collapse owing to the marine ice-sheet instability. Between 6 and 9 degrees of warming above pre-industrial levels, the loss of more than 70 per cent of the present-day ice volume is triggered, mainly caused by the surface elevation feedback. At more than 10 degrees of warming above pre-industrial levels, Antarctica is committed to become virtually ice-free. The ice sheet’s temperature sensitivity is 1.3 metres of sea-level equivalent per degree of warming up to 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels, almost doubling to 2.4 metres per degree of warming between 2 and 6 degrees and increasing to about 10 metres per degree of warming between 6 and 9 degrees. Each of these thresholds gives rise to hysteresis behaviour: that is, the currently observed ice-sheet configuration is not regained even if temperatures are reversed to present-day levels. In particular, the West Antarctic Ice Sheet does not regrow to its modern extent until temperatures are at least one degree Celsius lower than pre-industrial levels. Our results show that if the Paris Agreement is not met, Antarctica’s long-term sea-level contribution will dramatically increase and exceed that of all other sources. Modelling shows that the Antarctic Ice Sheet exhibits multiple temperature thresholds beyond which ice loss would become irreversible, and once melted, the ice sheet can regain its previous mass only if the climate cools well below pre-industrial temperatures.
Challenges for Heritage Conservation and Management in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia
This paper describes the issues and challenges in safeguarding and protecting the urban heritage in Medan by observing the town heritage of Medan and interviewing the local communities. The Indonesian Law on Cultural Property Conservation number 11 the year of 2010 allows the provincial and local government for the greater representation in managing and conserving their cultural heritage. This paper also discusses the gaps in that current town planning to assist the heritage conservation in Medan. Through a semi-structured interview, field survey and the SWOT analysis, the research found a broad overview of the challenges in heritage conservation in Medan. For example, overlapping duties, lack of clarity regarding jurisdiction and the lack of inter-organization coordination between government agencies that are significant obstacles to meeting the goals of heritage conservation. Another critical problem in Medan is registration and designation. In conclusion, the local government of Medan has paid less attention to the protection of their heritage during the last three decades. Meanwhile, the awareness of the local community at the grassroots increased; however, the concepts of an active role for the community and integrated conservation linked to the town planning are underdeveloped. Therefore, it has also caused the recent heritage conservation program challenging to achieve its objectives.
Wealth Distribution and Social Mobility in the US
We quantitatively identify the factors that drive wealth dynamics in the United States and are consistent with its skewed cross-sectional distribution and with social mobility. We concentrate on three critical factors: (i) skewed earnings, (ii) differential saving rates across wealth levels, and (iii) stochastic idiosyncratic returns to wealth. All of these are fundamental for matching both distribution and mobility. The stochastic process for returns which best fits the cross-sectional distribution of wealth and social mobility in the United States shares several statistical properties with those of the returns to wealth uncovered by Fagereng et al. (2017) from tax records in Norway.
How legacy firms can embrace the digital ecosystem via digital customer orientation
Because of modern digital technologies, business environments are turning into digital ecosystems, wherein a firm’s traditional interdependencies are increasingly influenced by digital connectivity. For legacy firms, or firms yet to incorporate these technologies into their business models, this shift ushers in new opportunities for value creation, albeit through new capabilities. In this article, we focus on how legacy firms can embrace digital ecosystems to create value through a new capability: digital customer orientation. We define digital customer orientation as offering customized and enriched customer experiences made possible by embracing digital ecosystems. We develop a framework for legacy firms to develop capabilities for digital customer orientation in three steps: (1) by distilling key insights on how digital natives such as Amazon, Google and Facebook leverage their digital ecosystems for digital customer orientation; (2) by showing how legacy firms can apply those insights to harness their digital ecosystems and develop their own approaches for digital customer orientation; and (3) by offering a road map and a research agenda for legacy firms to engage in digital customer orientation—both by highlighting the organizational attributes needed, and by framing those attributes within the principles of transformative marketing.
The artistic style transfer from Shanghai modern landmark buildings images to Xiao Jiaochang New Year pictures based on deep learning
Posting New Year pictures is a folk custom with a long history in China. Shanghai New Year pictures are loved by the people with its unique Shanghai style. As a representative of Shanghai New Year pictures, Xiao Jiaochang New Year pictures have left a strong mark in the history of Shanghai style culture and history through its diverse and comprehensive categories and rich artistic styles. However, due to its short well-developed period, the New Year pictures in Xiao Jiaochang have no inheritance and cannot apply for intangible cultural heritage. Nowadays, it is not realistic for us to use the traditional way to make New Year pictures in small schools because of the lack of inheritors and the production techniques have not been continued. Therefore, this paper mainly focuses on tracing back to this period of history, and realize the recording and dissemination of the style of the New Year pictures of Xiao Jiaochang through modern high-tech. Collect the relatively complete New Year pictures of Xiao Jiaochang in the world as a data set, and realize the style transfer to modern Shanghai's landmark buildings' pictures through the method of machine learning. Realizing the electronic work on spreading the culture in addition to the normal electronic record needs to be in time, so that Xiao Jiaochang New Year pictures can reappear in the world.
