Queer Perspectives on Erotic Human-Supernatural Encounters in Finland-Swedish Folk Legends
Despite numerous studies with various perspectives on the folk legend, the Nordic context is still lacking in studies that combine concepts of queerness and posthumanism with folk legends. This article focuses on Swedish folk legends in Finland that depict erotic encounters between humans and nature spirits. The three example legends used were collected in rural Swedish-speaking parts of Finland in 1890, 1898, and 1917. They all tell of encounters between humans (men) and spirits (females) that take place in nature, a place traditionally perceived as the home of these spirits. The erotic character of the encounters is determined not only by direct sexual interactions, but also within a frame of ambience, language, and acts. By using a combination of queer theory and posthumanist concepts, I challenge the ideas of normative sexual behaviour expressed in the material. A queer reading reveals transgressions within gender-normative behaviour and also interesting contradictions in which gender norms are abided by. The inter-species relationship between human and spirit can be seen as queer, but at the same time, it is normative or pursues normativity. The posthumanist approach results in the dissolution of the theoretical nature/culture dichotomy. The relationship between human and spirit can be viewed as that of companion species; a relationship based on the desire to connect, as well as a mutual past, present, and future.
Espelho de Narciso ou de Oxum? A poesia erótica negro-brasileira antologizada
Silence and verbalization: a metapsychological matrix of Karl Abraham and Robert Fliess
This article aims to analyze the metapsychological matrix of silence from the theoretical contributions of Karl Abraham and Robert Fliess. To Abraham, silence is understood from the concepts of oral, urethral, genital and anal eroticism and the influence of libido and erogenous zones in the development of personality and character. To Robert Fliess, silence is understood from the language apparatus described as a regressive erotic instinctual discharge, thus corresponding to three particular forms of sphincter closure: the erotic-urethral silence, the erotic-anal silence and erotic oral silence.
Queering the late imperial chinese zhiguai tales: strange encounters in the non/human realm
This thesis uses critical theory to examine animal–human relationships in the zhiguai tales [志怪小说], using Deleuze and Guattari as the theoretical framework alongside which I draw on aspects of queer theory and animal studies to think through several intersecting ‘othernesses,’ including the ‘queer,’ the ‘animal,’ and the ‘strange.’ Zhiguai is a well-known transliteration for “Tales of the Strange,” a genre of writing featuring ghosts, magical animal–human shapeshiftings, dreams that intervene in reality, and other supernatural characters and events. In this thesis, the strange comes to the forefront in the figure of the non/human – a two-fold figure made up of both ‘human’ and ‘animal.’ Throughout this thesis I appropriate the term ‘queerkind’ to foreground this ‘strange’ figure, which cannot be wholly generalized as ‘the animal,’ but is instead a magical creature most often existing between ‘human’ and ‘animal.’ The traditional scholarly approach to the zhiguai tales has been to understand the non/humans in these tales as purely allegorical representations of humans and human society. This thesis, however, does not only consider the figurative potential of non/human figures as questioning social and political issues, but also approaches them from the perspective of their distinct supernatural qualities, or the importance of “non/human” bodies in the stories, to complicate anthropocentric readings of the zhiguai tales. In this thesis, while broadly informed by queer theory and animal studies, I am specifically using Deleuze and Guattari’s theories of becoming, affect, and assemblage to argue for a rhizomatical reading and approach to the zhiguai tales, aimed at exploring the affects of ‘queerkind’ ‘animals.’ I therefore also use Noreen Giffney and Myra Hird’s concept of “queering the non/human” as a foundation which finds an affable conjunction with Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s theories, to provide a space for thinking about the fragile and porous boundary between human and animal in the zhiguai tales. I suggest that the blurring of the boundary between animal and human is crucial in shaping the non/human realm of zhiguai through the strange animal-human kinships and erotic encounters we discover there. I specifically argue that affects of these ‘queerkind’ are firstly within the text, as figures of boundary-crossing and ambiguity (humans/animals, alluring/dangerous, just/violent, strange/familiar); secondly beyond the text, affecting the reader through enchantment, anxiety, and titillation. I contextualize kinship and erotic relationships through the competing classical Chinese philosophies of naturalistic Daoism and humanistic Confucianism, which I read alongside Deleuze and queer theory.
Vibrations of Love
This collection of letters offers a profound exploration of Black queer love, desire, and friendship, set against a backdrop of creole-ism and the reclamation of joy. Presented as a counternarrative, it celebrates the elegance of queer eroticism and the beauty of love that blossoms freely between kindred souls. Through email and WhatsApp exchanges, these correspondences craft a narrative that transcends boundaries, celebrating the universality of intimacy and the elegance of queer eroticism. Rooted in the deliberate interplay of Kreyòl, French, and English, and further enriched by the inclusion of photographs, this work also celebrates the authenticity and vibrancy of Haitian culture and language. By weaving these three languages together, it reflects the dynamic, multilingual reality of Haitian communities while honoring the depth and fluidity of their expressions. At its core, this collection is an act of decolonization, reclaiming the pleasures, desires, and spaces where Black women’s joy exists purely for its own sake. It is a tapestry of resistance, creation, and philosophy, presenting an intimate portrayal of sex and sexuality that challenges mainstream narratives. Ultimately, this project is both a celebration and a gift, offering readers a rare glimpse into the extraordinary beauty of Black queer love, a love that is both rare and profoundly transformative. Journeys into the void: reformulations of eroticism in contemporary fictions
This collection of short stories and the accompanying critical exegesis interrogates whether eroticism, as defined by Georges Bataille, is possible in contemporary erotic writing. The project employs a Lacanian lens through which to examine the notions of transgression, selfhood, transcendence and language as aspects of Bataillean eroticism. It argues that works in the erotica genre such as 'Fifty Shades of Grey' rely on nostalgia for the transgression of prohibitions that no longer hold moral authority. This project argues, theoretically and creatively, that we must discover and define what constitutes contemporary taboos and prohibitions in mainstream society if we are to formulate new erotic works that explore their transgression.
