Using Our Values--Furthering Diversity and Ending Racism
2020
A journey through history reveals the distressing truth that the US Army has not always been a champion for diversity. Recently, Secretary of Defense Dr. Mark Esper announced new initiatives aimed at improving diversity and inclusion across the force. He challenged all Department of Defense personnel to engage in conversations about difficult topics such as race and inequality at all organizational levels. Open dialogue is a necessary first step to shifting the culture, and Edwards encourages continuing the conversation using a framework with which they should all be familiar -- the Army Values. One of the first concepts introduced to both Soldiers and civilians is that of the Army Values: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage.
