On the Vorlage, Tendenz, and Scribal Negligence of AT Esth 1:10-15
by
Lee, Lydia
2021
Abstract
In this article, a section of the Alpha-Text Esther story (1:10-15) is brought to the foreground to reveal the hitherto unrecognized hints that point to the Hebrew Vorlage, the literary Tendenz, and the scribal negligence unparalleled in either the Septuagint or the Masoretic text. All these literary phenomena suggest that the Alpha-Text and the Masoretic text versions reflect two variant archetypes of a Hebrew text, but this does not mean that both archetypes cannot overlap at places. When the archetypes do overlap, some of the unique readings in the Alpha-Text actually reflect later exegeses or misunderstandings that are dependent on the readings preserved in both the Masoretic text and the Septuagint. The later exegeses in particular help locate the Sitz im Leben of Alpha-Text Esth 1:10-15 in the Hasmonean period and thereafter when the Jewish-gentile relationship is strained.

A Macedonian in the Persian Court: Addition E of Esther and the Vetus Latina
2021
Abstract
This paper proposes that the identification of Haman as Macedonian can best be explained as originating in the Greek Vorlage to the Vetus Latina. It has been previously suggested, although it is a matter of controversy, that the non-canonical sections of Esther derive from the Greek Vorlage to the Vetus Latina. This article offers additional evidence in favour of this proposal.

Esther : the extraordinary true story of the First Fleet girl who became first lady of the colony
\"Esther Abrahams was one of the first Jewish women to arrive in the new land. Through her we meet some of the key people who helped shape the nation. Her life is an extraordinary rags-to-riches story. Aged 16, she stood trial at the Old Bailey in London for stealing 24 yards of black silk lace. Her sentence was transportation to New South Wales. She embarked on the perilous journey on the First Fleet as a convict, with no idea of what lay ahead. Once on shore, she became the servant and, in time, the wife of the young first lieutenant George Johnston. Much like another, better-known colonial woman, Elizabeth Macarthur, Esther successfully managed her husband's property and became a significant figure in the new colony. George Johnston, her husband, as leader of the Rum Rebellion against Governor Bligh, appropriated the office of Lieutenant-Governor of NSW, making Esther First Lady of the colony, a remarkable rise in society for a former convict.\" -- Unedited summary from book.
Oregon's Doctor to the World
2012,2015
Esther Clayson Pohl Lovejoy, whose long life stretched from 1869 to 1967, challenged convention from the time she was a young girl. Her professional life began as one of Oregon's earliest women physicians, and her commitment to public health and medical relief took her into the international arena, where she was chair of the American Women's Hospitals after World War I and the first president of the Medical Women's International Association. Most disease, suffering, and death, she believed, were the result of wars and social and economic inequities, and she was determined to combat those conditions through organized action.
Lovejoy's early life and career in the Pacific Northwest gave her key experiences and strategies to use for what she termed \"constructive resistance,\" the ability to take effective action against unjust power. She took a political and pragmatic approach to what she called \"woman's big job\"-achieving a full female citizenship-and emphasized the importance of votes for women. In this engaging biography, Kimberly Jensen tells the story of this important western woman, exploring her approach to politics, health, and society and her civic, economic, and medical activism.
