Eliminating health disparities : measurement and data needs
Disparities in health and health care across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds in the United States are well documented.The reasons for these disparities are, however, not well understood.Current data available on race, ethnicity, SEP, and accumulation and language use are severely limited.

Ethnicity and social work practice
Diversity has become a keynote feature of our society and social workers are increasingly finding themselves working with clients from a multitude of backgrounds and cultures. In order to work effectively with these groups and communities, it is imperative that they understand the significance of ethnicity and the ways in which it influences perceptions, behaviors, and responses to interventions. Knowledge is a prerequisite for such understanding and therefore critical for meaningful practice. However, knowledge is not the sole factor necessary for establishing social work relationships. The sensitivity of the practitioner to the culture and traditions of the client is equally important. This book offers a broad conceptual model applicable to working with any diverse ethnic population. Rather than discussing specific groups, it illustrates a model that can be universally applied to all populations. Beginning with the concept of the “ethnic lens” and its many dimensions, the book addresses social work with individuals, families, groups, and communities with separate chapters on ethnicity and services, healthcare, and policy. As each of these areas is examined through the lens, rather than through a description of specific ethnic characteristics or traits, it enables practitioners to become aware of their own lenses as well as those of others and thus to have greater awareness of how society, problems, the helping process, they themselves as social workers may be perceived. The book avoids stereotyping and generalizations as it provides comprehensive conceptual framework that can be used by students and practitioners.
America classifies the immigrants : from Ellis Island to the 2020 census
When more than twenty million immigrants arrived in the United States between 1880 and 1920, the government attempted to classify them according to prevailing ideas about race and nationality. But this proved hard to do. Ideas about racial or national difference were slippery, contested, and yet consequential--were \"Hebrews\" a \"race,\" a \"religion,\" or a \"people\"? As Joel Perlmann shows, a self-appointed pair of officials created the government's 1897 List of Races and Peoples, which shaped exclusionary immigration laws, the wording of the U.S. Census, and federal studies that informed social policy. Its categories served to maintain old divisions and establish new ones. Across the five decades ending in the 1920s, American immigration policy built increasingly upon the belief that some groups of immigrants were desirable, others not. Perlmann traces how the debates over this policy institutionalized race distinctions--between whites and nonwhites, but also among whites--in immigration laws that lasted four decades. Despite a gradual shift among social scientists from \"race\" to \"ethnic group\" after the 1920s, the diffusion of this key concept among government officials and the public remained limited until the end of the 1960s. Taking up dramatic changes to racial and ethnic classification since then, America Classifies the Immigrants concentrates on three crucial reforms to the American Census: the introduction of Hispanic origin and ancestry (1980), the recognition of mixed racial origins (2000), and a rethinking of the connections between race and ethnic group (proposed for 2020).-- Provided by publisher
Latinos in the Legislative Process
In one of the only accounts of Latino legislative behavior, Stella M. Rouse examines how well the growing Latino population translates their increased presence into legislative influence. Latinos in the Legislative Process explores Latino representation by considering the role of ethnicity throughout the legislative process – from bill sponsorship, to committee deliberations, to floor votes – in seven state legislatures. Rouse first identifies issues that are priorities for Latinos and tells us whether a Latino political agenda exists. She then provides a theoretical framework for ethnicity in legislative behavior and outcomes. Rouse demonstrates that ethnicity is a complex dynamic that plays a variable role in the legislative process. Thus, Latino representation cannot be viewed monolithically.
