The aim of this study was to analyze the Orla Marítima de João Pessoa (PB) [João Pessoa Waterfront] as an organization resulting from its daily practices and its Management Committee (Waterfront Project of the Federal Government). It is understood as an organization a collective and dynamic process around a practice that allows its recognition and social maintenance, considering the socio-material relations. The collection of empirical data used an ethnomethodological approach and was performed in two stages, the first through participation in twelve meetings of the Comitê Gestor Orla [Waterfront Management Committee], and the second with immersion in the Waterfront itself. Among the results, it was pointed out that the organizing occurs through scientific, economic, political, third sector, and tourism/leisure sociomaterial practices. It was found that the use of the Waterfront goes beyond what is discussed in its management committee and, as a social organization, it is only possible because there is sociomaterial interaction.
Review Symposium: Interactionism Meets Historical Analysis: An Author-Critic Dialogue on \Revolution and Witchcraft: The Code of Ideology in Unsettled Times\
In this article, an author-meets-critics session is recorded for the book \"Revolution and Witchcraft: The Code of Ideology in Unsettled Times,\" authored by Gordon C. CHANG. The session took place at the 2024 Annual Meeting of the Social Science History Association (SSHA) in Toronto, Canada. Beside the author, panelists included sociologist Andrew CHALFOUN (University of California, Los Angeles); sociologist Tad SKOTNICKI (University of North Carolina, Greensboro); historian Aminda SMITH (Michigan State University); and communication scholar J.R. OSBORN (Georgetown University). The highly unconventional, cross-disciplinary nature of the book sparked an engaging dialogue. Differing opinions were voiced regarding: 1. How—and whether— CHANG in his \"codification model\" advanced a workable, original sociology of knowledge approach; 2. the utility of that model for scholars from different disciplines who study idea systems and social phenomena; 3. the difference between idea systems that are empirically based and those that are ideationally based; and 4. how microscopic analysis of language might make causal claims about macroscopic patterns of humanistic and social-scientific relevance. These issues arose due to differences between and among diverse approaches of interactionism and historical analysis. In this dialogue, methodological decisions and judgments are unveiled which were involved in CHANG's eclectic study, as well as applications and areas of future development that are otherwise hidden in the research product.
Discursive leadership in technological change
This thesis is contributing to a greater understanding of discursive leadership by exploring as it happens in situ and by looking more closely at the daily interactional work of leadership actors in the process of technological change. In this thesis, I argue that many of the existing accounts of leadership in organisational studies have contributed to a widely accepted ‘grandiose’ image of leadership conceptualising the phenomenon as a pre-existing entity and a taken-for-granted privilege of people on the top of organisational hierarchy who are responsible for making the executive decisions. My view on leadership is different. It is less grandiose, more mundane, and fundamentally a reality-defining activity. Being intrigued by daily discursive practices of doing leadership - as moments of providing an ‘intelligible formulation’ of reality - I contribute to the discursive leadership agenda by following a social constructionist path. The ‘linguistic turn’ in social sciences is my point of departure towards embracing the social and linguistic aspects of leadership. My thesis contributes to the field of management and organisation studies by developing an analytical framework to study discursive leadership as an interactional accomplishment by elaborating and synthesising theoretical insights from organisational sensemaking, discursive leadership and the social studies of technology. The value of this framework informed by the principles of ethnomethodology is that it has the potential for providing a better understanding of how technological change is constructed, negotiated and accomplished through the daily discursive practices of leadership actors who make sense of and give sense to processes of technological change in organisations. Responding to the empirical challenge of tracing the everyday interactional constitution of discursive leadership, my study is based on an extensive dataset, including meeting observations, interviews, and documents obtained during a twelve-month fieldwork. Drawing on this data, I use a range of interpretive approaches; namely, ethnomethodologically-informed discourse analysis (EDA), conversation analysis (CA), membership categorisation analysis (MCA) and organisational ethnography that iv enabled me to undertake a painstaking exploration of discursive micro-granularity of members’ sensemaking accounts which I used as units of my analysis. My study advances the existing research on organisational sensemaking by analysing reasoning procedures through which leadership actors construct a meaningful sense of the technological change through accounts. By setting a micro-discursive lens on leadership as a situated discursive practice and giving priority to participants’ own sensemaking, I identified a repertoire of discursive devices used by leadership actors to make sense and to give sense to the technological change in an organisation. Through examining the interactional accomplishment of the leadership phenomenon, my research advances the existing work on organisational sensemaking by an empirical demonstration of the organising properties of leadership as ‘sensemaking in action’. My thesis contributes to the discursive leadership field by offering insights into category predication work of leadership actors which enable sensemaking and sensegiving about technological change through the processes of framing and reframing. Three vignettes (each comprising of a set of episodes) demonstrate the membership categorisation work in leadership interaction which includes the following processes: reconstituting a category, characterising a category and generating category constraints thus revealing how technological change is accomplished through discursive practice of leadership actors.

Secular wrestling of Ilha de Marajó, in Northern Brazil, the Marajoara Wrestling is present in the lives of the people of Cachoeira do Arari in different contexts, such as farms, riverbanks, improvised training centers, and popular festivals like the Festivity of Glorious Saint Sebastian. Like other types of combat sports, Marajoara Wrestling can be understood as a culturally constructed manifestation imbued with meanings. Among the factors that contribute to the wrestlers acquiring different meanings is the context in which their practice occurs. Following this interpretation and based on the theoretical assumptions of festival and culture by Brandão (1989, 2010), Geertz (2008) and Duvignaud (1983), this research analyzed the meanings attributed to Marajoara Wrestling in the Festivity of Glorious Saint Sebastian in Cachoeira do Arari. Anchored in elements of Ethnomethodology, the research is grounded in a qualitative approach. Data collection took place through participant observation, field notes, a field diary and semi-structured interviews. The categorization, analysis, and interpretation of the data allowed us to infer that fun is the main meaning attributed to Marajoara Wrestling in the Saint Sebastian festival in Cachoeira. It is concluded that Marajoara Wrestling is not only an attraction of the festival but one of its main symbolic assets, which, governed by fun, enriches it with meanings, knowledge, and feelings.
