Collecting Across Cultures

In the early modern age more people traveled farther than at any earlier time in human history. Many returned home with stories of distant lands and at least some of the objects they collected during their journeys. And those who did not travel eagerly acquired wondrous materials that arrived from faraway places. Objects traveled various routes-personal, imperial, missionary, or trade-and moved not only across space but also across cultures. Histories of the early modern global culture of collecting have focused for the most part on EuropeanWunderkammern, or \"cabinets of curiosities.\" But the passion for acquiring unfamiliar items rippled across many lands. The court in Java marveled at, collected, and displayed myriad goods brought through its halls. African princes traded captured members of other African groups so they could get the newest kinds of cloth produced in Europe. Native Americans sought colored glass beads made in Europe, often trading them to other indigenous groups. Items changed hands and crossed cultural boundaries frequently, often gaining new and valuable meanings in the process. An object that might have seemed mundane in some cultures could become a target of veneration in another. The fourteen essays inCollecting Across Culturesrepresent work by an international group of historians, art historians, and historians of science. Each author explores a specific aspect of the cross-cultural history of collecting and display from the dawn of the sixteenth century to the early decades of the nineteenth century. As the essays attest, an examination of early modern collecting in cross-cultural contexts sheds light on the creative and complicated ways in which objects in collections served to create knowledge-some factual, some fictional-about distant peoples in an increasingly transnational world.

InThe Lives in Objects, Jessica Yirush Stern presents a thoroughly researched and engaging study of the deerskin trade in the colonial Southeast, equally attentive to British American and Southeastern Indian cultures of production, distribution, and consumption. Stern upends the long-standing assertion that Native Americans were solely gift givers and the British were modern commercial capitalists. This traditional interpretation casts Native Americans as victims drawn into and made dependent on a transatlantic marketplace. Stern complicates that picture by showing how both the Southeastern Indian and British American actors mixed gift giving and commodity exchange in the deerskin trade, such that Southeastern Indians retained much greater agency as producers and consumers than the standard narrative allows. By tracking the debates about Indian trade regulation, Stern also reveals that the British were often not willing to embrace modern free market values. While she sheds new light on broader issues in native and colonial history, Stern also demonstrates that concepts of labor, commerce, and material culture were inextricably intertwined to present a fresh perspective on trade in the colonial Southeast.

and congenial phase of the relationship between the United States
and Iran. In Losing Hearts and Minds , Shannon tells the
story of an influx of Iranian students to American college campuses
between 1950 and 1979 that globalized U.S. institutions of higher
education and produced alliances between Iranian youths and
progressive Americans.
Losing Hearts and Minds is a narrative rife with
historical ironies. Because of its superpower competition with the
USSR, the U.S. government worked with nongovernmental organizations
to create the means for Iranians to train and study in the United
States. The stated goal of this initiative was to establish a
cultural foundation for the official relationship and to provide
Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi with educated elites to administer an
ambitious program of socioeconomic development. Despite these
goals, Shannon locates the incubation of at least one possible
version of the Iranian Revolution on American college campuses,
which provided a space for a large and vocal community of dissident
Iranian students to organize against the Pahlavi regime and earn
the support of empathetic Americans. Together they rejected the
Shah's authoritarian model of development and called for civil and
political rights in Iran, giving unwitting support to the rise of
the Islamic Republic of Iran.
