Geophysical Evidence of the Collisional Suture Zone in the Prydz Bay, East Antarctica

The location and origin of Neoproterozoic‐Cambrian sutures provide keys to understand the formation and evolution of the supercontinent Gondwana. The Larsemann Hills is located near a major Neoproterozoic‐Cambrian suture zone in the Prydz Belt, but has not been examined locally by comprehensive geophysical studies. In this study, we analyzed data collected from a one‐dimensional (1D) joint seismic‐MT array deployed during the 36th Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition. We found that a sharp Moho discontinuity offset of 6–8 km shows up in the stacked image of teleseismic P‐wave receiver function analysis; coinciding with the abrupt Moho offset, a near‐vertical channel with (a) low resistivity extending to the uppermost mantle depths, and (b) high crustal Poisson's ratio in the crust is identified. These findings provide evidence for the determination of the location and collisional nature of the Prydz belt or a portion of it. Plain Language Summary Our study seeks to unravel the history of a supercontinent called Gondwana. We do this by exploring ancient geological features known as sutures. These sutures are like stitches that hold the Earth's crust together, and they're crucial in understanding how continents were once connected. We specifically focused on a place in Antarctica called the Larsemann Hills, which is located near an important suture zone. This region hasn't received much attention from scientists until now. During the 36th Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition, we made some exciting discoveries. We found a clear boundary in the Earth's crust, a bit like a seam in a piece of clothing. At the same time, we noticed a unique underground pathway. This pathway had special properties, suggesting that it reaches deep into the Earth's mantle. It's a bit like finding a hidden treasure beneath the Earth's surface. Our findings strongly suggest a connection between these underground discoveries and the ancient sutures in the Earth's crust. In other words, we're piecing together a puzzle that can help us learn more about the Earth's past and how continents have moved over millions of years. The influence of landfast ice on the navigation in the Arctic Northeast Passage

Landfast ice is one of the most important factors that affect the navigation safety of Arctic Northeast and Northwest Passages but usually is treated as drift ice in previous studies. This study focused on the situation of landfast ice in four key traits of the Arctic Northeast Passage from 2007 to 2021 and calculated the navigational windows for different ice-class vessels in the influence of landfast ice. The results show that the extent of landfast ice in these straits generally reaches its maximum from March to June, and decreases to a minimum or even disappears in July and August. The proportion of landfast ice extent in the four straits is quite different, such as Bering Strait (1.3%), De Long Strait (3.6%), Dmitry Laptev and Sannikov Strait (DLS Strait) (53.5%), and Vilkitsky Strait (27.8%). The average navigational windows range from 27 weeks (Bering Strait) to 8 weeks (Vilkitsky Strait) per year, and the Bering Strait showed the smallest increase trend (0.20 weeks per year), while the Vilkitsky Strait experienced the largest increase trend (0.62 weeks per year). The increasing navigational windows in the key straits are beneficial for future commercial and scientific expeditions of polar vessels in the Northeast Passage.

The role of macroalgae in Blue Carbon assessments has been controversial, partially due to uncertainties about the fate of exported macroalgae. Available evidence suggests that macroalgae are exported to reach the open ocean and the deep sea. Nevertheless, this evidence lacks systematic assessment. Here, we provide robust evidence of macroalgal export beyond coastal habitats. We used metagenomes and metabarcodes from the global expeditions Tara Oceans and Malaspina 2010 Circumnavigation. We discovered macroalgae worldwide at up to 5,000 km from coastal areas. We found 24 orders, most of which belong to the phylum Rhodophyta. The diversity of macroalgae was similar across oceanic regions, although the assemblage composition differed. The South Atlantic Ocean presented the highest macroalgal diversity, whereas the Red Sea was the least diverse region. The abundance of macroalgae sequences attenuated exponentially with depth at a rate of 37.3% km−1, and only 24% of macroalgae available at the surface were expected to reach the seafloor at a depth of 4,000 m. Our findings indicate that macroalgae are exported across the open and the deep ocean, suggesting that macroalgae may be an important source of allochthonous carbon, and their contribution should be considered in Blue Carbon assessments.
