The Techniques of Operational and Investigative Countering Actions Against Extremist Crimes by the Operational Units of the Internal Affairs Bodies
Introduction: the counteraction to crimes of extremist orientation is carried out by the operational divisions of the Internal Affairs Bodies that need the techniques of counteraction to such crimes, which is confirmed by the results of the empirical research. The development of the basic techniques for operational and investigative counteraction to extremist crimes is determined by: improving the activities of the operational units, improving the quality of interaction between the police and other state bodies, religious and public associations on counteraction issues; a comprehensive approach to counteraction depending on the type of extremism and the operational situation in the region. The purpose of the study was to develop the basics of the operational investigative counteraction techniques using a situational approach. Methods: the methodological framework for this research is a set of methods of scientific knowledge, among which the main ones are the methods of systematicity, analysis and situational approach. Results: the paper considers the possibility of using the situational approach to the basics of the techniques for countering extremist crimes, substantiates the authors’ position on various characteristics of the structural and content elements of the techniques, the sources of recommendations, which are the operational-search characteristics of extremist crimes, operational-search practice and science. Conclusions: the identification and description of real typical situations of counteraction in which operational officers of the Internal Affairs bodies have to act is an important condition for the development of specific methodological recommendations. The following structural and substantive elements of the techniques for countering extremist crimes are highlighted (blocks of recommendations): recommendations on legal support of counteraction; recommendations on application of the operational and preventive measures; recommendations on interaction with the subjects of counteraction to extremism; recommendations on the operational situation in the region for extremist crimes; recommendations on the use of the information sources.
The problems of improving the legal framework in combating extremism
This research paper explores the importance of legal definition of the terms “extremism” and “extremist activities”. It reviews a few specific measures announced and adopted by some European countries with extensive counterextremism experience. In the final section, a number of concluding thoughts and recommendations are offered, which express the researchers’ view of combating extremism by improving the legal framework.

From Uncertainty to Extremism: Social Categorization and Identity Processes
Societal change and personal life events sometimes make one feel uncertain about one's self and identity. According to uncertainty-identity theory, this self-uncertainty can motivate people to identify with social groups, particularly groups that provide a distinctive and clearly defined identity and associated normative beliefs and behavioral prescriptions. This process can make more extreme groups and behaviors attractive as a source of identification-contingent uncertainty reduction. People may zealously identify with highly distinctive groups that have strong and directive leadership and ideological and ethnocentric belief systems that proscribe dissent and prescribe group-normative behavior. This analysis has been extended to help illuminate how extremism may emerge in the context of religion, politics, gangs, leadership, and adolescent risk taking. This article describes uncertainty-identity theory, overviews empirical support for its main tenets, and outlines some directions for future research.

Psychological Features of Extreme Political Ideologies
In this article, we examine psychological features of extreme political ideologies. In what ways are political left-and right-wing extremists similar to one another and different from moderates? We propose and review four interrelated propositions that explain adherence to extreme political ideologies from a psychological perspective. We argue that (a) psychological distress stimulates adopting an extreme ideological outlook; (b) extreme ideologies are characterized by a relatively simplistic, black-and-white perception of the social world; (c) because of such mental simplicity, political extremists are overconfident in their judgments; and (d) political extremists are less tolerant of different groups and opinions than political moderates. In closing, we discuss how these psychological features of political extremists increase the likelihood of conflict among groups in society.

Quest for Significance and Violent Extremism: The Case of Domestic Radicalization
In the present study, we applied the quest for significance model of radicalization to explain the use of political violence. According to the model, when people experience loss of personal significance (e.g., due to social rejection, achievement failures, or abuse) the motivation to restore significance may push them toward the use of extreme means. We tested this prediction in a sample of individuals who have committed ideologically motivated crimes in the United States (n = 1496). We found that experiences of economic and social loss of significance were separate and positive predictors related to the use of violence by perpetrators of ideologically motivated crimes. We also found evidence that the presence of radicalized others (friends but not family members) in the individuals' social network increased their likelihood of using violence.
