Implementing a Hand Gesture Recognition System Based on Range-Doppler Map
There have been several studies of hand gesture recognition for human–machine interfaces. In the early work, most solutions were vision-based and usually had privacy problems that make them unusable in some scenarios. To address the privacy issues, more and more research on non-vision-based hand gesture recognition techniques has been proposed. This paper proposes a dynamic hand gesture system based on 60 GHz FMCW radar that can be used for contactless device control. In this paper, we receive the radar signals of hand gestures and transform them into human-understandable domains such as range, velocity, and angle. With these signatures, we can customize our system to different scenarios. We proposed an end-to-end training deep learning model (neural network and long short-term memory), that extracts the transformed radar signals into features and classifies the extracted features into hand gesture labels. In our training data collecting effort, a camera is used only to support labeling hand gesture data. The accuracy of our model can reach 98%.
High-Precision Vital Signs Monitoring Method Using a FMCW Millimeter-Wave Sensor
The method of using millimeter-wave radar sensors to detect human vital signs, namely respiration and heart rate, has received widespread attention in non-contact monitoring. These sensors are compact, lightweight, and able to sense and detect various scenarios. However, it still faces serious problems of noisy interference in hardware, which leads to a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We used a frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar sensor operating at 77 GHz in an office environment to extract the respiration and heart rate of a person accustomed to sitting in a chair. Indeed, the proposed signal processing includes novel impulse denoising operations and the spectral estimation decision method, which are unique in terms of noise reduction and accuracy improvement. In addition, the proposed method provides high-quality, repeatable respiration and heart rates with relative errors of 1.33% and 1.96% on average compared with the reference values measured by a reliable smart bracelet.
Human Activity Recognition Method Based on FMCW Radar Sensor with Multi-Domain Feature Attention Fusion Network
This paper proposes a human activity recognition (HAR) method for frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar sensors. The method utilizes a multi-domain feature attention fusion network (MFAFN) model that addresses the limitation of relying on a single range or velocity feature to describe human activity. Specifically, the network fuses time-Doppler (TD) and time-range (TR) maps of human activities, resulting in a more comprehensive representation of the activities being performed. In the feature fusion phase, the multi-feature attention fusion module (MAFM) combines features of different depth levels by introducing a channel attention mechanism. Additionally, a multi-classification focus loss (MFL) function is applied to classify confusable samples. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves 97.58% recognition accuracy on the dataset provided by the University of Glasgow, UK. Compared to existing HAR methods for the same dataset, the proposed method showed an improvement of about 0.9–5.5%, especially in the classification of confusable activities, showing an improvement of up to 18.33%.
MMPFNet: A Novel Lightweight Road Target Detection Method of FMCW Radar Based on Hypergraph Mechanism and Attention Enhancement
Road target detection is a crucial aspect of current research in automotive advanced driver assistance systems and intelligent transportation systems, where accuracy, speed, and lightweight design are key considerations. Compared to various sensors employed in driving assistance systems, millimeter-wave radar offers advantages such as all-weather operation, low hardware cost, strong penetration capability, and the ability to extract rich spatial information about targets. This paper tackles the challenges posed by the characteristics of Range-Angle map data from 77 GHz Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave radar—namely, non-visible light imagery, abstract representation, rich fine details, and overlapping features. To this end, this paper proposes MMPFNet, a lightweight model based on the hypergraph mechanism with attention enhancement, as an extension of YOLOv13. First, an M-DSC3k2 module is proposed based on the hypergraph mechanism to enhance attention toward small targets. Second, a detection head with a double-bottleneck inverted MBConv-block structure is designed to improve the model’s accuracy and generalization capability. Third, a lightweight PPLConv module is customized to transform the backbone network, enhancing the model’s lightweight design while slightly reducing its accuracy. Considering the differences from traditional visible light datasets, the Focus Expansion-IoU loss function is introduced into the model to focus attention on different regression samples. The MMPFNet model achieves significant improvements in detecting common road targets such as pedestrians, bicycles, cars, and trucks on the Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave radar Range-Angle dataset compared to the baseline YOLOv13n model: mAP50-95 increases by 16%, precision improves by 6%, and recall rises by 8.7%. MMPFNet is also evaluated on other non-visible light datasets such as CRUW-ONRD and soundprint datasets. Compared to commonly used detection models like FCOS and RetinaNet, MMPFNet achieves significant performance gains, attaining state-of-the-art results.
Experimental Comparison of IR-UWB Radar and FMCW Radar for Vital Signs
In this paper, we compare the performances of impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) and frequency modulation continuous wave (FMCW) radars in measuring noncontact vital signs such as respiration rate and heart rate. These two type radars have been widely used in various fields and have shown their applicability to extract vital signs in noncontact ways. IR-UWB radar can extract vital signs using distance information. On the other hand, FMCW radar requires phase information to estimate vital signs, and the result can be enhanced with Multi-input Multi-output (MIMO) antenna topologies. By using commercial radar chipsets, the operation of radars under different conditions and frequency bands will also affect the performance of vital sign detection capabilities. We compared the accuracy and signal-to-noise (SNR) ratios of IR-UWB and FMCW radars in various scenarios, such as distance, orientation, carotid pulse, harmonics, and obstacle penetration. In general, the IR-UWB radars offer a slightly better accuracy and higher SNR in comparison to FMCW radar. However, each radar system has its own unique advantages, with IR-UWB exhibiting fewer harmonics and a higher SNR, while FMCW can combine the results from each channel.
Signal Expansion Method in Indoor FMCW Radar Systems for Improving Range Resolution
As various unmanned autonomous driving technologies such as autonomous vehicles and autonomous driving drones are being developed, research on FMCW radar, a sensor related to these technologies, is actively being conducted. The range resolution, which is a parameter for accurately detecting an object in the FMCW radar system, depends on the modulation bandwidth. Expensive radars have a large modulation bandwidth, use the band above 77 GHz, and are mainly used as in-vehicle radar sensors. However, these high-performance radars have the disadvantage of being expensive and burdensome for use in areas that require precise sensors, such as indoor environment motion detection and autonomous drones. In this paper, the range resolution is improved beyond the limited modulation bandwidth by extending the beat frequency signal in the time domain through the proposed Adaptive Mirror Padding and Phase Correction Padding. The proposed algorithm has similar performance in the existing Zero Padding, Mirror Padding, and Range RMSE, but improved results were confirmed through the ρs indicating the size of the side lobe compared to the main lobe and the accurate detection rate of the OS CFAR. In the case of ρs, it was confirmed that with single targets, Adaptive Mirror Padding was improved by about 3 times and Phase Correct Padding was improved by about 6 times compared to the existing algorithm. The results of the OS CFAR were divided into single targets and multiple targets to confirm the performance. In single targets, Adaptive Mirror Padding improved by about 10% and Phase Correct Padding by about 20% compared to the existing algorithm. In multiple targets, Phase Correct Padding improved by about 20% compared to the existing algorithm. The proposed algorithm was verified through the MATLAB Tool and the actual FMCW radar. As the results were similar in the two experimental environments, it was verified that the algorithm works in real radar as well.
FMCW Radar Sensors with Improved Range Precision by Reusing the Neural Network
This paper addresses the challenge of enhancing range precision in radar sensors through supervised learning. However, when the range precision surpasses the range resolution, it leads to a rapid increase in the number of labels, resulting in elevated learning costs. The removal of background noise in indoor environments is also crucial. In response, this study proposes a methodology aiming to increase range precision while mitigating the issue of a growing number of labels in supervised learning. Neural networks learned for a specific section are reused to minimize learning costs and maximize computational efficiency. Formulas and experiments confirmed that identical fractional multiple patterns in the frequency domain can be applied to analyze patterns in other FFT bin positions (representing different target positions). In conclusion, the results suggest that neural networks trained with the same data can be repurposed, enabling efficient hardware implementation.
Recognition of Soccer Player Actions Using a Synchronized Multi-Camera and mm-Wave Radar Platform
This paper presents a multimodal sensing approach for fine-grained soccer action recognition using synchronized mm-wave FMCW radar and multiview RGB cameras. A TI IWR1443BOOST FMCW radar and three Sony IMX296 global-shutter cameras were used to record seven soccer-related actions in different movement directions in an outdoor environment. Range–Doppler radar processing is applied to extract global mel features and CFAR-localized block representations of mel and radar spectrogram features to capture both coarse and fine micro-Doppler characteristics. Camera features are derived from bounding box, HOG, optical flow, and pose estimations. Classification is performed using logistic regression as the classical model and various deep models. Performance is evaluated using cross-validation. Radar alone achieved moderate performance (0.897 F1macro using TCN), successfully identifying coarse motion but showing limited separability for dribbling-based actions. Camera-only models achieve near-perfect accuracy (≥0.997 F1macro using 1D-CNN), with the confusion matrices being nearly perfectly diagonal already. The best performance is obtained from a cross-modal transformer with multiple cameras (0.998 F1macro). These results demonstrate that a camera by itself performs strongly for the action recognition task but also that radar–camera fusion can improve robustness and enhance the discrimination of finer soccer player movements for outdoor analytics and player monitoring applications.
Fully Integrated 24-GHz 1TX-2RX Transceiver for Compact FMCW Radar Applications
A fully integrated 24-GHz radar transceiver with one transmitter (TX) and two receivers (RXs) for compact frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar applications is here presented. The FMCW synthesizer was realized using a fractional-N phase-locked loop (PLL) and programmable chirp generator, which are completely integrated in the proposed transceiver. The measured output phase noise of the synthesizer is −80 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset. The TX consists of a three-bit bridged t-type attenuator for gain control, a two-stage drive amplifier (DA) and a one-stage power amplifier (PA). The TX chain provides an output power of 13 dBm while achieving <0.5 dB output power variation within the range of 24 to 24.25 GHz. The RX with a direct conversion I-Q structure is composed of a two-stage low noise amplifier (LNA), I-Q generator, mixer, transimpedance amplifier (TIA), a two-stage biquad band pass filter (BPF), and a differential-to-single (DTS) amplifier. The TIA and the BPF employ a DC offset cancellation (DCOC) circuit to suppress the strong reflection signal and TX-RX leakage. The RX chain exhibits an overall gain of 100 dB. The proposed radar transceiver is fabricated using a 65 nm CMOS technology. The transceiver consumes 220 mW from a 1 V supply voltage and has 4.84 mm2 die size including all pads. The prototype FMCW radar is realized with the proposed transceiver and Yagi antenna to verify the radar functionality, such as the distance and angle of targets.
