A Review of Fibre Reinforced Polymer Bridges
Fibre-reinforced polymer composites (FRPs) offer various benefits for bridge construction. Lightweight, durability, design flexibility and fast erection in inaccessible areas are their unique selling points for bridge engineering. FRPs are used in four bridge applications: (1) FRP rebars/tendons in concrete; (2) repair and strengthening of existing bridges; (3) new hybrid–FRP bridges with conventional materials and (4) all–FRP composite new bridges made entirely of FRP materials. This paper reviews FRP bridges, including all–FRP and hybrid–FRP bridges. FRP bridges’ history, materials, processes and bridge components—deck, girder, truss, moulded parts and cables/rebars are considered. This paper does not discuss the use of FRP as an architectural element and a strengthening system. While lack of design codes, material specifications and recycling are the major challenges, the high cost of FRPs still remains the most critical barrier to the progress of FRPs in bridges.
Residual Fire Resistance Testing of Basalt- and Hybrid-FRP Reinforced Concrete Beams
The fire resistance of fiber-reinforced polymer reinforced concrete (FRP-RC) elements depends on the temperature performance of the original concrete member, the fire scenario, and FRP reinforcement behavior. In this study, fire resistance tests are described, along with the characteristics obtained during and after applying elevated temperatures, simulating the effects of fire. The tested beams were reinforced with basalt (BFRP) bars and with a hybrid composite of carbon fibers and basalt fibers (HFRP) bars. Fire tests were performed on full-scale beams, in which the midsections of the beams were heated from below (tension zone) and from the sides for two hours, after which the beams were cooled and subjected to flexural testing. BFRP-RC beams failed before the heating time was completed; the best failure was associated with a BFRP reinforced beam that failed approximately 108 min after heating. Contrary to the BFRP-RC samples, HFRP-RC beams were capable of resisting exposure to elevated temperatures for two hours, but showed a 70% reduction in strength capacity when compared to non-heated reference beams. According to the author, the higher resistance of HFRP-RC beams was the result of the thermal expansion coefficient of carbon fibers employed in HFRP, which “prestresses” the beams and enables smaller deflections. The preliminary findings of this study can increase the feasibility of using FRP materials for engineering purposes.
Study on the fire resistance of RC beams reinforced with BFRP and HFRP bars
For non-metallic reinforcement to be successfully integrated into residential and commercial construction, extensive research is required to understand the structural performance of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) reinforced concrete (RC) elements in various conditions, including the effect of elevated temperatures on structural performance. To accomplish this, a full-scale investigation was performed on the structural performance of FRP-RC elements subjected to elevated temperatures. The study involved conducting fire tests on beams, where the midsection was heated from below (tension zone) and the sides while being simultaneously loaded with 50% of their ultimate loads. The beams were reinforced with Basalt FRP (BFRP) bars and a hybrid composite of Carbon and Basalt Fibers (HFRP) bars. The HFRP-RC beams showed better resistance to the combined effect of loading and elevated temperatures compared to BFRP-RC beams. This study provides insights into the behavior of FRP materials in RC structures subjected to high temperatures, and contributes to the advancement of knowledge in this field.
A Review of Fibre Reinforced Polymer Structures
This paper reviews Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites in Civil Engineering applications. Three FRP types are used in Structural Engineering: FRP profiles for new construction, FRP rebars and FRP strengthening systems. Basic materials (fibres and resins), manufacturing processes and material properties are discussed. The focus of the paper is on all-FRP new-build structures and their joints. All-FRP structures use pultruded FRP profiles. Their connections and joints use bolting, bonding or a combination of both. For plate-to-pate connections, effects of geometry, fibre direction, type and rate of loading, bolt torque and bolt hole clearance, and washers on failure modes and strength are reviewed. FRP beam-columns joints are also reviewed. The joints are divided into five categories: web cleated, web and flange cleated, high strength, plate bolted and box profile joints. The effect of both static and cyclic loading on joints is studied. The joints’ failure modes are also discussed.
Flax, Basalt, E-Glass FRP and Their Hybrid FRP Strengthened Wood Beams: An Experimental Study
In this study, the structural behavior of small-scale wood beams externally strengthened with various fiber strengthened polymer (FRP) composites (i.e., flax FRP (FFRP), basalt FRP (BFRP), E-glass FRP (“E” stands for electrical resistance, GFRP) and their hybrid FRP composites (HFRP) with different fiber configurations) were investigated. FRP strengthened wood specimens were tested under bending and the effects of different fiber materials, thicknesses and the layer arrangements of the FRP on the flexural behavior of strengthened wood beams were discussed. The beams strengthened with flax FRP showed a higher flexural loading capacity in comparison to the beams with basalt FRP. Flax FRP provided a comparable enhancement in the maximum load with beams strengthened with glass FRP at the same number of FRP layers. In addition, all the hybrid FRPs (i.e., a combination of flax, basalt and E-glass FRP) in this study exhibited no significant enhancement in load carrying capacity but larger maximum deflection than the single type of FRP composite. It was also found that the failure modes of FRP strengthened beams changed from tensile failure to FRP debonding as their maximum bending load increased.
Innovative Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Rope-Based Closed-Form Retrofitting Methods Applied in Reinforced Concrete T-Shaped Beams under Torsion
The fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) elements with torsional deficiencies has not yet been extensively studied. Existing studies have primarily focused on rectangular RC beams. The few studies on L or T-shaped beams have used open-form retrofitting methods. However, premature debonding of the retrofitting from concrete surfaces often leads to detachment before achieving enhanced torsional capacity. This study introduces an innovative application of closed-form FRP retrofitting for RC T-beams against torsion. Two novel closed-form torsional upgrading methods were proposed and investigated through a comprehensive experimental program involving eight large-scale T-beams. One method employs FRP ropes embedded in transverse grooves near the surface, while the other combines U-shaped EB-FRP strips with FRP ropes. Additionally, two configurations were examined replicating scenarios where the upper part of the slab is accessible or inaccessible. The results demonstrate that the closed-form methods improve torsional strength by 9% to 25% and twist at failure by 92% to 536% compared to unstrengthened beams, with beams retrofitting through the slab exhibiting superior performance. Step-by-step technical guidelines of the proposed methods are presented to minimize construction defects and ensure effective implementation in real RC structures.
Investigation of Ensemble Machine Learning Models for Estimating the Ultimate Strain of FRP-Confined Concrete Columns
Accurately predicting the ultimate strain of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP)-confined concrete columns is essential for the widespread application of FRP in strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) columns. This study comprehensively investigates the performance of ensemble machine learning (ML) models in estimating the ultimate strain of FRP-confined concrete (FRP-CC) columns. A dataset of 547 test results of the ultimate strain of FRP-CC columns was collected from the literature for training and testing ML models. The four best single ML models were used to develop ensemble models employing voting, stacking and bagging techniques. The performance of the ensemble models was compared with 10 single ML and 11 empirical strain models. The study results revealed that the single ML models yielded good agreement between the estimated ultimate strain and the test results, with the best single ML models being the K-Star, k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) and Decision Table (DT) models. The three best ensemble models, a stacking-based ensemble model comprising K-Star, k-NN and DT models; a stacking-based ensemble model comprising K-Star and k-NN models and a voting-based ensemble model comprising K-Star and k-NN models, achieved higher estimation accuracy than the best single ML model in estimating the strain capacity of FRP-CC columns.
Post-Fire Characteristics of Concrete Beams Reinforced with Hybrid FRP Bars
One of the main concerns of experimental and numerical investigations regarding the behavior of fiber-reinforced polymer reinforced concrete (FRP-RC) members is their fire resistance to elevated temperatures and structural performance at and after fire exposure. However, the data currently available on the behavior of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforced members related to elevated temperatures are scarce, specifically relating to the strength capacity of beams after being subjected to elevated temperatures. This paper investigates the residual strength capacity of beams strengthened internally with various (FRP) reinforcement types after being subjected to high temperatures, reflecting the conditions of a fire. The testing was made for concrete beams reinforced with three different types of FRP bars: (i) basalt-FRP (BFRP), (ii) hybrid FRP with carbon and basalt fibers (HFRP) and (iii) nano-hybrid FRP (nHFRP), with modification of the epoxy matrix of the rebar. Tested beams were first loaded at 50% of their ultimate strength capacity, then unloaded before being heated in a furnace and allowed to cool, and finally reloaded flexurally until failure. The results show an atypical behavior observed for HFRP bars and nHFRP bars reinforced beams, where after a certain temperature threshold the deflection began to decrease. The authors suggest that this phenomenon is connected with the thermal expansion coefficient of the carbon fibers present in HFRP and nHFRP bars and therefore creep can appear in those fibers, which causes an effect of “prestressing” of the beams.
A Review of Recycling Methods for Fibre Reinforced Polymer Composites
This paper presents a review of waste disposal methods for fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials. The methods range from waste minimisation, repurposing, reusing, recycling, incineration, and co-processing in a cement plant to dumping in a landfill. Their strength, limitations, and key points of attention are discussed. Both glass and carbon fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP and CFRP) waste management strategies are critically reviewed. The energy demand and cost of FRP waste disposal routes are also discussed. Landfill and co-incineration are the most common and cheapest techniques to discard FRP scrap. Three main recycling pathways, including mechanical, thermal, and chemical recycling, are reviewed. Chemical recycling is the most energy-intensive and costly route. Mechanical recycling is only suitable for GFRP waste, and it has actually been used at an industrial scale by GFRP manufacturers. Chemical and thermal recycling routes are more appropriate for reclaiming carbon fibres from CFRP, where the value of reclaimed fibres is more than the cost of the recycling process. Discarding FRP waste in a sustainable manner presents a major challenge in a circular economy. With strict legislation on landfill and other environmental limits, recycling, reusing, and repurposing FRP composites will be at the forefront of sustainable waste-management strategies in the future.
Mechanical Properties of Fibre Reinforced Polymers under Elevated Temperatures: An Overview
Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite is one of the most applicable materials used in civil infrastructures, as it has been proven advantageous in terms of high strength and stiffness to weight ratio and anti-corrosion. The performance of FRP under elevated temperatures has gained significant attention among academia and industry. A comprehensive review on experimental and numerical studies investigating the mechanical performance of FRP composites subjected to elevated temperatures, ranging from ambient to fire condition, is presented in this paper. Over 100 research papers on the mechanical properties of FRP materials including tensile, compressive, flexural and shear strengths and moduli are reviewed. Although they report dispersed data, several interesting conclusions can be drawn from these studies. In general, exposure to elevated temperatures near and above the resin glass transition temperature, Tg, has detrimental effects on the mechanical characteristics of FRP materials. On the other hand, elevated temperatures below Tg can cause low levels of degradation. Discussions are made on degradation mechanisms of different FRP members. This review outlines recommendations for future works. The behaviour of FRP composites under elevated temperatures provides a comprehensive understanding based on the database presented. In addition, a foundation for determining predictive models for FRP materials exposed to elevated temperatures could be laid using the finding that this review presents.
