The Wolf and his shadow and other fables
\"Being a good friend takes practice and effort. Loyalty, patience, and selflessness are key parts of friendship, and hard to put into practice when trying to recruit many friends instead of just a few. Aesop's fable 'The Hare with Many Friends' drives this point home to readers! They'll take away similar lessons from the many other stories of Aesop, including 'The Lion, the Fox, and the Stag' and 'The Swan and the Goose.\" All enhanced by hand-drawn illustrations, these fables help readers begin to understand strong character and the good it can bring to self and others\"--Provided by the publisher.
The Complete Fables of Jean de La Fontaine
2007,2010,2014
Charming and elegant, Jean de La Fontaine's (1621-1695) animal fables depict sly foxes and scheming cats, vain birds and greedy wolves, all of which subtly express his penetrating insights into French society and the beasts found in all of us. Norman R. Shapiro has been translating La Fontaine's fables for over twenty years, capturing the original works' lively mix of plain and archaic language. This newly complete collection is destined to set the English standard for the oeuvre of one of the world's greatest fabulists.
Mice and the weasels and other fables
\"In 'The Lion and Mouse, ' a lion catches a mouse that begs to be set free, offering a favor in the future. The lion doesn't think the mouse could ever help him-until the little mouse is the one to free him from a net! This and 14 other fables will introduce readers to the lessons of Aesop, including 'The Eagle and the Beetle, ' another tale telling about the greatness of the small. Lovely, full-color illustrations add charm and fun to these fables, enhancing the reading experience and readers' enjoyment\"--Provided by the publisher.
Animal Farm
1996
a novel by George Orwell, published in 1945. Orwell's most famous and widely read work, Animal Farm is a political fable that partly recounts, in an allegorical mode, the aftermath of the Russian revolution, and partly illustrates a belief in the universal tendency of power to corrupt. The major characters are all animals, who have overthrown their human masters to establish a collective farm run on egalitarian lines. Before long, a hierarchical power structure re-emerges, with the pigs forming a ruling élite. Their progressive detachment from the rest of the animals has the same alienating effect as the Bolshevik Party's leading role in post-revolutionary Russia. The pigs themselves divide into two factions, led by a Stalinlike Napoleon on one side, and a Trotsky-like Snow-ball on the other. The heroic sufferings of the Soviet peoples are reflected in the dedication of Boxer the carthorse, who is killed by his Stakhanovite workload, while the idiocies of political orthodoxy are satirized in the behaviour of the sheep with their repeatedly bleated slogan ‘Four legs good, two legs bad’. By the end of the story, the pigs' regime has become more savage than the one it replaced, and the final betrayal of the revolution is expressed in the bewilderment of the starved and exhausted ‘lower’ animals: ‘The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again: but already it was impossible to say which was which.’ The most effective writing in the book deals with the attempts of those in power constantly to rewrite history, to redefine what is true and what is false, and to revise the first principles of their political programme. The most memorable example of this tendency in ...
