Canadians at Gallipoli: Royal Newfoundland Regiment honoured
Disease took ten of the regiment's men. The regiment lost its first soldiers during the First World War right here at Gallipoli, 40 lives lost in all. More than half of them are buried just beyond those hills at the Lancashire Landing Cemetery. The Helles Point monument is a tribute to the Allied soldiers, including the Newfoundlanders, surrounded by the same strait that was filled with burning battleships 100 years ago. Newfoundland-and-Labrador's lieutenant governor is the regiment's honorary commander.
