Words of war win pupil trip to Cassino

Jonathan Falconer, a Year 12 Christ's College student, was one of four students to win the Prime Minister's essay writing competition to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino. As well as taking part in the week of commemoration, Falconer will lay silk poppies at the graves of three Christ's College old boys who died at Monte Cassino -- David Tripp, Ferdinand Batchelor and Thomas Higginson. [Jonathan Falconer] and three other winning authors head to Cassino on May 14 with the official government party to attend the 60th anniversary commemorations of the World War 2 battle fought in and around the Italian town of Cassino. \"It was interesting finding out what the men who went there went through. The sacrifice they put up for New Zealand and the world.\" Jonathan's essay argues the moot is partly true, in terms of loss of life, tactics, errors and misuse of forces. However, he also argues it was where the New Zealand soldiers triumphed despite hardship and adversity fighting with bravery, courage and camaraderie.
