Child Guidance Centres in Japan
This book represents a Copernican change to our understanding of alternative care in Japan and answers the question of Japan's continued use of institutional care over foster care.

In contemporary Japan, 85 per cent of children in alternative care remain housed in large welfare institutions, as opposed to family-based foster care. This publication examines how Japan has been isolated from the global discourse on alternative care, urging a shift in social work and alternative care policies.
As the first ethnographic account from inside child guidance centres, it makes a key contribution towards understanding the closed world of Japan's social services, including the decision-making processes by which a child is removed from the family and placed into care. In addition, regional variation in policy implementation for alternative care is outlined, with reference to detailed case studies and a discussion around organisational cultures of the child guidance centres. Where foster care is constructed as anything other than professional, it is often seen as a threat to the child's family-bond with their natal parent and therefore not used. Child Guidance Centres in Japan destabilises this construction of the family-bond as singular and discrete, highlighting new practices in alternative care.

Place Attachment Index of Landowners in Pandaan Sub-District, Pasuruan Regency, Indonesia
Land-use change occurs alongside the socio-economic, political, social and cultural conditions. Social condition is described as a sense of place or attachment to the place. Attachments to places arise because of changes, conceptualized as emotional links between humans and their environment. The classification of place attachment index indicates the score of three variables on five dimensions which explaines the people's expectation to defend their land. The aim of this study is to determine resident's opinion about the desire to maintain their land in Pandaan Sub-District using the place attachment index. This index consists of three variables: (1) place identity and place dependence; (2) community context (friend bonding and family bonding); (3) and natural environmental context (natural bonding). The research's result shows the score of variables: the place identity (75.88), place dependence (72.50), family bond (76.82), friend bond (72.82) and nature bond (76.97). All of these scores conclude that the place attachment index is on high class group with the average value is more than 73.33. It means that the residents in Pandaan Sub-District attach great importance of their land and have an emotional connection with their surroundings to maintain the sustainability of their village.

Transformation of traditional houses in the development of sustainable rural tourism, case study of Brayut Tourism Village in Yogyakarta
This paper aims to reveal local values used by Brayut villagers to maintain the existence of the traditional house as a dwelling. The transformation of traditional houses goes as time passes, influenced by internal aspects related to the needs of residents and external aspects related to the regional development by the government. Traditional Javanese house as a cultural identity of Javanese people, especially in the village, has also experienced the transformation phenomenon. Modernization affects local residents' needs and the Government's Development Program for tourism village influences demands of change. An unfocused transformation can lead to a total change that can eliminate the cultural identity of the rural Java community. The method used is the case study by taking three models of Javanese house in Brayut Village. Brayut Tourism Village is a cultural tourism village that relies on tradition as a tourist attraction. The existence of traditional Javanese house is an important asset for retaining its authenticity as a dwelling. Three models taken as the case studies represent the traditional Javanese house types. The result obtained is that the family bond is a major factor in preserving the traditional Javanese house in Brayut Village, Yogyakarta.

Evaluación de las necesidades afectivas en niñas y niños adoptados: manifestaciones en su expresividad psicomotriz
La adopción supone un proceso de creación de nuevos vínculos emocionales, un encuentro en el que construir unos lazos que posibiliten al niño o a la niña disponer de un sostén que le permita crecer en las diferentes áreas del desarrollo. Este artículo pretende mostrar los resultados obtenidos en un estudio colectivo de casos realizado con 21 menores en situación de adopción, en el que se describen las manifestaciones referidas a la expresividad emocional, corporal y verbal. Para ello, se han realizado observaciones narrativas de las sesiones de evaluación en Psicomotricidad Relacional, entrevistas biográficas realizadas a las familias y análisis de los informes previos de los menores. El análisis de los datos se realizó con la utilización del paquete estadístico SPSS, tras la identificación previa de un listado de categorías. Los resultados y conclusiones hacen referencia a la detección tanto de las necesidades como de las competencias de los niños y niñas de este estudio, destacando las manifestaciones emocionales derivadas de la falta (o ruptura) de un sostén primario.Como cita este artículo: Sánchez Rodríguez, J., Morillo Lesme, T. and Riera Quintana, C. A family sketch and other private writings
This book publishes, for the first time in full, the two most revealing of Mark Twain’s private writings. Here he turns his mind to the daily life he shared with his wife Livy, their three daughters, a great many servants, and an imposing array of pets. These first-hand accounts display this gifted and loving family in the period of its flourishing. Mark Twain began to write \"A Family Sketch\" in response to the early death of his eldest daughter, Susy, but the manuscript grew under his hands to become an exuberant account of the entire household. His record of the childrens’ sayings—\"Small Foolishnesses\"—is next, followed by the related manuscript \"At the Farm.\" Also included are selections from Livy’s 1885 diary and an authoritative edition of Susy’s biography of her father, written when she was a teenager. Strong family bonds and stress during a health crisis in Vietnam
Although stress and mental health challenges during crises have been widely documented, limited attention has been given to how strong family bonds may also transmit or amplify stress among family members. This dynamic, often reflected in the idea that the suffering of one member affects the entire group, remains particularly understudied in culturally family-oriented contexts such as Vietnam. This study investigates stress patterns among 988 Vietnamese respondents and examines the factors associated with stress using the COVID-19 pandemic as a case study of crisis impact. We employ the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and integrate Conservation of Resources Theory, the Social Determinants Framework, and the Family Systems-Illness Model in our analysis. The key finding highlights how strong family bonds in Vietnamese culture intensify stress levels when family members become infected with the virus, particularly due to, e.g., caregiving responsibilities and the emotional burden of being physically separated from ill family members. Policymakers, when designing interventions to address mental health challenges, should not only focus on individuals directly experiencing illness but also consider the well-being of other family members. The findings should be interpreted with caution, given the cross-sectional design and the context-specific nature of the study.

Flawed Fatherhoods in the Cinema of Jaime Rosales: The Father’s Unmet Gaze
Since his beginnings, Jaime Rosales has directed seven feature films: The Hours of the Day (2003), Solitary Fragments (2007), Tiro en la cabeza (A Shot in the Head) (2008), Dream and Silence (2011), Beautiful Youth (2014), Petra (2018) and Wild Flowers (2022). In his films, the maternal-filial bond becomes the strongest factor in the lives of his characters, but in almost all of his films this bond is treated in parallel with paternal-filial relationships –which this research focuses on. Rosales portrays various models of fatherhood, some clearly failed and others in the light of positive construction. This study aims to analyse, through qualitative and filmic analysis, the design and evolution of these characters, to search for a pattern of fatherhood with common characteristics, to determine if it is a personal theme in the films of Rosales, and to investigate cinematographic resources that specifically make an original portrait of fatherhood. In this sense, we discover that in Rosales’ cinema, the father’s gaze hardly meets that of the son, daughter, or couple, and for this, the director uses various visual strategies such as polyvision, the subjective shot, or panoramic shots to ensure that these gazes, in fact, almost never meet. Desde sus inicios, Jaime Rosales ha dirigido siete largometrajes: Las horas del día (2003), La soledad (2007), Tiro en la cabeza (2008), Sueño y silencio (2011), Hermosa Juventud (2014), Petra (2018) y Girasoles silvestres (2022). En su cine, el vínculo maternofilial deviene en el factor más sólido en las vidas de sus personajes, pero en casi todas sus películas este lazo es tratado en paralelo a las relaciones paternofiliales, que es el vínculo en el que se centra la presente investigación. Rosales dibuja diversos modelos de paternidad, algunos claramente fracasados y otros en vías positivas de construcción. Este estudio quiere analizar, a través del análisis cualitativo y fílmico, el diseño y evolución de estos personajes, buscar si existe un patrón de paternidad con características comunes, determinar si es un tema propio y personal del cine de Rosales e indagar en recursos cinematográficos que de forma específica hagan un retrato original de la paternidad. En este sentido, descubrimos que en el cine de Rosales la mirada del padre difícilmente se encuentra con la del hijo, la hija o la pareja, y para ello el director echa mano de diversas estrategias visuales como la polivisión, el plano subjetivo o las panorámicas con el objetivo de que esas miradas, de hecho, casi nunca se encuentren.

Individuals' waste separation practice in a relationship with social bonds: a case study of Hanoi, Vietnam
PurposeThe paper aims to ascertain whether residents in Nguyen Du ward still sort their waste at source following the end of the 3R project that ended in 2009. Additionally, this paper aims to explore the relationship between waste separation practices and social bonds.Design/methodology/approachThe Travis Hirschi theory of social control was applied, together with the mixed method research design which included a structured questionnaire survey. Twelve semi-structured interviews were also conducted with residents and the data processed by SPSS software, using Chi-Square test, Independent-Samples t-test and Pearson's correlation analysis.FindingsA proportion of respondents has continued practicing waste separation since the 3R project ended. The study also indicated that the greater the involvement in family and neighborhood activities the more the participants were likely to practice waste separation.Research limitations/implicationsThe small sample size limits the extent to which the most influential factors can be determined and therefore the degree to which the findings can be generalized.Practical implicationsThe study includes implications for rerunning the waste separation programs for households as together with community campaigns to improve individuals' attachment and commitment and thus their participation in pro-environmental behaviors.Originality/valueTo the author’s knowledge, this is the first study to take a sociological approach to investigate factors affecting household waste separation, which has attracted little attention in previous studies. Useful information is also provided to local authorities for a policy-making process to implement effective domestic waste policies.
