Famine remains one of the worst calamities that can befall a society. This text traces the history of famine from the earliest records onwards. / Lenin's System of Power and Property in Occupied Ukraine. 1917-1923
Lenin s System of Power and Property in Occupied Ukraine. 1917-1923 Kyjiv, Akademperiodyka 2024, 548 s., ISBN 978-966-360-508-1. „Vedlejším\" cílem publikace je zároveň zakomponovat interpretační rámce angloamerických sovětologů (zejména Richarda Pipese a Martina Malii) do ukrajinské historiografie meziválečné Ukrajiny. Kn. 1-3, Kyjiv 2013; TÝŽ, Nacional'na polityka Kremlja ščodo USRR (1919-1922), in: V. A. SMOLIJ (eds.), Nacional'ne pytannja v Ukrajini XX - počatku XXI st.: istoryčni narysy, Kyjiv 2012, s. 155-186; TÝŽ, Jak naspravdi vyhljadav rosijs'ko-radjans'kyj socializm, Svitohljad, 2023, no. 18, s. 46-57.
Victims of Ireland's Great Famine
With one million dead, and just as many forced to emigrate, the Irish Famine (1845-52) is among the worst health calamities in history. In 2006, archaeologists discovered a mass burial containing the remains of nearly 1,000 Kilkenny Union workhouse inmates. In the first bioarchaeological study of Great Famine victims, Jonny Geber uses skeletal analysis to tell the story of how and why the Irish Famine decimated the lowest levels of nineteenth century society. By examining the physical conditions of the inmates that might have contributed to their institutionalization, as well as to the resulting health consequences, Geber sheds new and unprecedented light on Ireland's Great Hunger.
Tears from Iron
This multi-layered history of a horrific famine that took place in late-nineteenth-century China focuses on cultural responses to trauma. The massive drought/famine that killed at least ten million people in north China during the late 1870s remains one of China's most severe disasters and provides a vivid window through which to study the social side of a nation's tragedy. Kathryn Edgerton-Tarpley's original approach explores an array of new source materials, including songs, poems, stele inscriptions, folklore, and oral accounts of the famine from Shanxi Province, its epicenter. She juxtaposes these narratives with central government, treaty-port, and foreign debates over the meaning of the events and shows how the famine, which occurred during a period of deepening national crisis, elicited widely divergent reactions from different levels of Chinese society.
