METAL, HEAL THYSELF
Metals are critical in a huge range of structures and products--from bridges to engines, from airplanes to solder joints in electronic devices. But metals are susceptible to fatigue damage. Over time, stress and motion create microscopic fissures that enlarge and spread until the metal breaks. While researchers have concocted some types of self-healing concrete and plastic, self-healing metal was always considered science fiction. Until a decade ago. That's when Michael Demkowicz, professor of materials science and engineering at Texas A and M University, used computer simulations to theorize that, under certain conditions, the microscopic cracks formed in metal by wear and tear would reseal. Now, by accident, Sandia National Laboratories researchers have witnessed the phenomenon. The investigators were using an electron microscope to observe how cracks formed as the team repeatedly tugged on the ends of a nanoscale slice of platinum.
Landscapes of possibility: An introduction to fantasy in 2SLGBTQIA+ and disabled therapeutic contexts
This article introduces the concept of 'landscapes of possibility' as an extension of and prequel to Michael White's landscapes of action and meaning. This article focuses on landscapes of possibility found in fantasy realms as they affect 2SLGBTQIA+ populations and disabled populations (communities in which I and many people I am in conversation with hold membership). I discuss considerations and limitations for landscapes of possibility and offer examples that illustrate the mechanics of implementing landscapes of possibility and integrating the results into landscapes of meaning and action.
The convergence of media. Internet audiovisual platforms (Over-The-Top) and their impact on the audiovisual market in Spain
Introduction. Among the current pay television offer, the impact of OTT operators (streaming audiovisual services) in the transformation of the current panorama of the Spanish audiovisual market stands out. Objectives and Hypotheses. The general objective is to analyze the current situation of the television panorama in Spain and compare it with the available data about the emergence of OTT operators. We start from the hypothesis that it raises an initial growth situation towards a saturated but powerful model, which makes it possible to fragment audiences even more, but which calls into question the linear television model and raises serious questions about the viability of its business model. Method. An exhaustive review of the information published by secondary sources, whether periodic or not, at the national level, as well as of the specialized press was carried out. Results. The decrease in linear television consumption in benefit of IPTV and OTTs is confirmed. In Spain, pay television revenues are equal to those of free-to-air television, confirming the change of model towards a television system based on video-on-demand and mobile devices. The OTT market is increasingly diverse but is highly concentrated in just two operators, Netflix and HBO Spain. Conclusions. The hypothesis is confirmed by finding a saturated audiovisual panorama that represents a benefit for viewers in terms of increasing the quality of productions, especially those related to fiction, but which also entails a problem of visibility of the contents and a problem of exhaustion for the spectators.
Desistance: Literature and the Logic of Life
By “Latin American literary tradition,” in other words, I am only referring to the customary inscription of these texts within the so-called Latin American studies, an “area study” among others that results from the internal division of labor within modern and contemporary universities. However, more important than this administrative division is the fact that all the texts I will comment on are elaborations of a singular experience of finitude and exhaustion. Thus, what dies in these texts is not only the main character—and soon enough the writer—but also a particular way of understanding literature that has defined its modern relationship to politics. José María Arguedas’s El zorro de arriba y el zorro de abajo (1971), Severo Sarduy’s Pájaros de la playa (1993), and Clarice Lispector’s A hora da Estrela (1977), among others, constitute a series of literary texts in which conventional criticism informed by the nationformation processes and its economimesis begins to fade away. What we see in these texts is a combination of testimony and the thematization of illness and death affecting both characters and authors, which demands from us a different practice of reading.

The Ridiculous Sublime in Don DeLillo’s White Noise and Cosmopolis
The sublime figures significantly in Don DeLillo’s novels. Transformed into what has been termed postmodern sublime - disposing of transcendence in favor of immanence - it is considered to be more of a hollow, confusing and overwhelming phenomenon rather than an elevating and empowering one. Moreover, the multiplicity of prior representations and the exhaustion of the possible have undermined the authenticity and power of the sublime, turning it into pseudo-sublime and mock-sublime. As such, it has moved ever closer to the realm of the ridiculous to the point where it is rather a question of co-existence and co-implication between them rather than an opposition. This can be phrased the ridiculous sublime. This paper focuses on DeLillo’s White Noise (1984) and Cosmopolis (2003) by drawing on major theorists of the sublime like Kant, Jameson, Zizek and, most notably, Lyotard, in an attempt to shed light on the modality of the merging of the sublime and the ridiculous. Our analysis shows that in DeLillo’s fiction, White Noise and Cosmopolis, the events and phenomena that transpire to convey a sense of sublimity are almost always interrupted and tarnished by an implication of the grotesque and the ridiculous. This transformation of the concept of the sublime reflects the decline of metanarratives and the exhaustion of possible experiences as the hallmarks of the postmodern era.
Finding truth in fictions: identifying non-fictions in imaginary cracks
I critically examine some recent work on the philosophy of scientific fictions, focusing on the work of Winsberg. By considering two case studies in fracture mechanics, the strip yield model and the imaginary crack method, I argue that his reliance upon the social norms associated with an element of a model forces him to remain silent whenever those norms fail to clearly match the characteristic of fictions or non-fictions. In its place, I propose a normative epistemology of fictions which clarifies a model's ontological commitments when the community of scientists lack any clear, shared norms of use. Specifically, I will introduce a variational account of fictions as an extension of Laymon's monotonic improvability account of idealizations. I will conclude by connecting this variational account of fictions to didactic fictions in general.
