The safe and reliable operation of technical systems is of great significance for the protection of human life and health, the environment, and of the vested economic value. The correct functioning of those systems has a profound impact also on production cost and product quality. The early detection of faults is critical in avoiding performance degradation and damage to the machinery or human life. Accurate diagnosis then helps to make the right decisions on emergency actions and repairs. Fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) has developed into a major area of research, at the intersection of systems and control engineering, artificial intelligence, applied mathematics and statistics, and such application fields as chemical, electrical, mechanical and aerospace engineering. IFAC has recognized the significance of FDD by launching a triennial symposium series dedicated to the subject.The SAFEPROCESS Symposium is organized every three years since the first symposium held in Baden-Baden in 1991. SAFEPROCESS 2006, the 6th IFAC Symposium on Fault Detection, Supervision and Safety of Technical Processes was held in Beijing, PR China. Deep Learning Techniques in Intelligent Fault Diagnosis and Prognosis for Industrial Systems: A Review

Fault diagnosis and prognosis (FDP) tries to recognize and locate the faults from the captured sensory data, and also predict their failures in advance, which can greatly help to take appropriate actions for maintenance and avoid serious consequences in industrial systems. In recent years, deep learning methods are being widely introduced into FDP due to the powerful feature representation ability, and its rapid development is bringing new opportunities to the promotion of FDP. In order to facilitate the related research, we give a summary of recent advances in deep learning techniques for industrial FDP in this paper. Related concepts and formulations of FDP are firstly given. Seven commonly used deep learning architectures, especially the emerging generative adversarial network, transformer, and graph neural network, are reviewed. Finally, we give insights into the challenges in current applications of deep learning-based methods from four different aspects of imbalanced data, compound fault types, multimodal data fusion, and edge device implementation, and provide possible solutions, respectively. This paper tries to give a comprehensive guideline for further research into the problem of intelligent industrial FDP for the community.

Gearbox Fault Identification and Classification with Convolutional Neural Networks

Vibration signals of gearbox are sensitive to the existence of the fault. Based on vibration signals, this paper presents an implementation of deep learning algorithm convolutional neural network (CNN) used for fault identification and classification in gearboxes. Different combinations of condition patterns based on some basic fault conditions are considered. 20 test cases with different combinations of condition patterns are used, where each test case includes 12 combinations of different basic condition patterns. Vibration signals are preprocessed using statistical measures from the time domain signal such as standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis. In the frequency domain, the spectrum obtained with FFT is divided into multiple bands, and the root mean square (RMS) value is calculated for each one so the energy maintains its shape at the spectrum peaks. The achieved accuracy indicates that the proposed approach is highly reliable and applicable in fault diagnosis of industrial reciprocating machinery. Comparing with peer algorithms, the present method exhibits the best performance in the gearbox fault diagnosis.

The Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) has drastically impacted how the world operates. The Internet of Things (IoT), encompassed significantly by the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), is an important subsection component of the IR 4.0. WSNs are a good demonstration of an ambient intelligence vision, in which the environment becomes intelligent and aware of its surroundings. WSN has unique features which create its own distinct network attributes and is deployed widely for critical real-time applications that require stringent prerequisites when dealing with faults to ensure the avoidance and tolerance management of catastrophic outcomes. Thus, the respective underlying Fault Tolerance (FT) structure is a critical requirement that needs to be considered when designing any algorithm in WSNs. Moreover, with the exponential evolution of IoT systems, substantial enhancements of current FT mechanisms will ensure that the system constantly provides high network reliability and integrity. Fault tolerance structures contain three fundamental stages: error detection, error diagnosis, and error recovery. The emergence of analytics and the depth of harnessing it has led to the development of new fault-tolerant structures and strategies based on artificial intelligence and cloud-based. This survey provides an elaborate classification and analysis of fault tolerance structures and their essential components and categorizes errors from several perspectives. Subsequently, an extensive analysis of existing fault tolerance techniques based on eight constraints is presented. Many prior studies have provided classifications for fault tolerance systems. However, this research has enhanced these reviews by proposing an extensively enhanced categorization that depends on the new and additional metrics which include the number of sensor nodes engaged, the overall fault-tolerant approach performance, and the placement of the principal algorithm responsible for eliminating network errors. A new taxonomy of comparison that also extensively reviews previous surveys and state-of-the-art scientific articles based on different factors is discussed and provides the basis for the proposed open issues.

Fault Location for Distribution Smart Grids: Literature Overview, Challenges, Solutions, and Future Trends

Thanks to smart grids, more intelligent devices may now be integrated into the electric grid, which increases the robustness and resilience of the system. The integration of distributed energy resources is expected to require extensive use of communication systems as well as a variety of interconnected technologies for monitoring, protection, and control. The fault location and diagnosis are essential for the security and well-coordinated operation of these systems since there is also greater risk and different paths for a fault or contingency in the system. Considering smart distribution systems, microgrids, and smart automation substations, a full investigation of fault location in SGs over the distribution domain is still not enough, and this study proposes to analyze the fault location issues and common types of power failures in most of their physical components and communication infrastructure. In addition, we explore several fault location techniques in the smart grid’s distribution sector as well as fault location methods recommended to improve resilience, which will aid readers in choosing methods for their own research. Finally, conclusions are given after discussing the trends in fault location and detection techniques.

This book provides an introduction and offers approaches for finding and addressing normalization of deviation both in operational and organizational activities. It addresses the initial and long-term effects of normalization of deviations as seen in reduced efficiencies, reduced product quality, extended batch run time, and near miss process safety incidents which can lead to loss of containment of hazardous materials and energies.This book addresses how to recognize and respond to the normalization of deviation that can, and almost certainly will, occur in any ongoing operations that involves humans. The book's primary focus is on reducing the incidence of normalization of deviation and the associated increased risk exposure due to its effects when operating chemical or petrochemical manufacturing facilities. It contains an introduction to the concept and offers approaches for finding and addressing normalization of deviation when it presents itself in both operational and organizational activities.
