Pupils who showed they could do better Improving schools
It is hard to believe that in l997 pupils achieved an abysmal 54 out of the maximum of 300 - meaning that very few 11-year-olds achieved the standard expected for their age in English, maths and science. The 10 most improved schools were: [Dalton Foljambe]; St Joseph's Catholic Primary, also in [Rotherham]; Rolleston Junior, Leicester; Deykin Avenue, Birmingham; Ridge Meadow, the Medway Towns; Halcon Community; Oldfield Brow, Trafford; Ranworth Square, Liverpool; Gaskell Primary, Bolton; Kelvin Grove, Lewisham, south-east London.
Primary School League Tables: Success story that defied its social disadvantage Most Improved School
DALTON FOLJAMBE primary school in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, this year's most improved school, is a model of New Labour rectitude. Name almost any new initiative of the many pouring out of the Department for Education, and the school has taken it on board. Phil Rodgers, the head, makes no apology for the fact that the school's success has been achieved by a ruthless concentration on raising standards in reading, writing and maths - just as ministers hoped when they relaxed the rules compelling primary schools to teach nine national curriculum subjects. [Howard White], who was the highest paid primary school headteacher in Rotherham with a salary in excess of [Pounds]50,000 a year, was also found guilty of falsely claiming [Pounds]2,088 in expenses following a school trip to New Zealand in 2001.
