Natural Trouble continues Scott Hightower's investigation begun in Tin Can Tourist . Themes of inheritance extend through changes of landscape and bad weather to hungers, urgencies, inequities, and bereavements. Hightower also reminds us that the practice of writing is at the core of democracy: poetry seeks a foundation in the truth of the individual, guaranteed and restored through the integrity of language.

561 Embedding cultural perspectives in co-production of research to address inequalities in healthy ageing for older African and Caribbean adults
2025
Abstract
OP 36: Challenges and Opportunities for Health 2, B207 (FCSH), September 5, 2025, 10:15 - 11:15
Aims
This paper outlines the findings from a series of co-produced knowledge-sharing and mobilisation activities with older adults from African and Caribbean communities to gain insights and cultural perspectives on ageing within these communities.
Methods
The events involved a series of co-produced activities using strong community engagement and community-based participatory methods. These included: (i) Roundtable discussions with community members, influential community leaders, and older adults to understand challenges related to ageing as well as potential solutions to inform future interventions. (ii) A research dissemination and prioritisation workshop to discuss findings and set priorities for upcoming ageing research. (iii) A multigenerational community event bringing together the African and Caribbean communities through poetry, food, music, and dance to celebrate the community, encourage conversations, and build trust to ensure representation and engagement in future ageing research.
Results
A total of 120 participants from the African and Caribbean communities across the UK were involved in the co-produced activities. These activities took place from October 2023 to October 2024. Major challenges related to ageing included limited growing spaces, social isolation, stress and depression, unlearning unhealthy eating habits and food choices, and financial costs. Participants highlighted research topics such as hypertension, mental and sexual health, diabetes, dementia, companionship and housing, and physical activity tailored to functional capacity, as well as integrating physical activity into their overall wellbeing. They stressed the importance of action-oriented research that leverages collective community knowledge and builds social capacity.
Conclusions
This study exemplifies best practice in the co-production of ageing research with adults from the African and Caribbean communities. The findings are timely and align with initiatives promoting inclusion, ethical standards, and co-produced research with underserved communities. It underscores the need for support beyond grant funding to enable researchers and communities to collaborate effectively and develop their capabilities for future ageing research.

Courage of the Cogs
2024
In this submission, the writer spins a tale of crushing fears and dystopian forces through humor-packed rhyming poetry. As our world faces challenging issues that can make us all feel like underdogs, this short piece seeks to bring some light to the darkness while portraying the truth that progression rarely proceeds as planned. Yes, it is a convergence of Dr. Seuss and 1984, arriving at the very moment our species might need to find motivation to ultimately \"do better.\"
