We quantify the effects of lending and balance sheet channels on corporate investment during large devaluations. We find that if currency crises are accompanied by banking crises, domestic exporters holding unhedged foreign currency debt decrease investment while foreign exporters with better access to credit increase investment despite their unhedged foreign currency debt. We do not find such a differential effect under pure currency crises. Using firm-bank matched data during the global financial crisis, we show that both domestic and foreign-owned firms experienced a decline in bank credit from affected banks; however, foreign-owned firms substituted the lost credit.

Local Institutions, Audit Quality, and Corporate Scandals of US-Listed Foreign Firms
2016
Using data on shareholder-initiated class action lawsuits in the US, I investigate the corporate scandals of US-listed foreign firms. The shareholders of scandal firms suffer considerable loss in both the short term and the long term. I document that firms domiciled in countries with weak institutions are more likely to be embroiled in corporate scandals, but such a relation can be moderated by the presence of Big 4 auditors. Investors automatically adjust for undiscovered misconduct when valuing the stocks of non-scandal firms (i.e., the spillover effect). Investors rely on the audit quality to form their expectations about the severity of undiscovered misconduct, and thus impose less negative spillovers on firms with Big 4 auditors, especially when the firms are from countries with weak institutions. Taken together, my results suggest that listing on US exchanges does not fully compensate for weak local institutions; voluntarily bonding to a more stringent audit process has an incremental effect on protecting shareholder interests and enhances the confidence of investors in firms' financial integrity.

Gender pay gaps in domestic and foreign-owned firms
2021
We investigate differences in gender wage gaps between foreign-owned and domestically owned firms in Poland, a country that has experienced large FDI inflows over the past three decades. We show that the adjusted gender wage gaps are larger among employees working in the foreign-owned sector than in the domestic sector. The gender pay gaps are found to be larger in the foreign-owned companies than in the domestically owned firms at every decile of the wage distribution, with the largest disparities being observed at the bottom and at the top. Our findings also show that in the foreign-owned sector, the returns to individual, job, and firm characteristics earned by women are much lower than the returns earned by men, but that the foreign-owned firms appear to pay higher firm-specific wage premia to women than to men, thereby narrowing within-firm gender wage inequality. These patterns differ from those observed in the domestic sector, in which firm wage premia tend to widen within-firm wage distributions, and contribute to the overall level of gender wage inequality.

MULTINATIONALS AND U.S. PRODUCTIVITY LEADERSHIP: EVIDENCE FROM GREAT BRITAIN
2009
We study the productivity of U.S. and other foreign-owned plants in the United Kingdom. Using a new data set that can identify for the first time domestic U.K. MNEs in such a study, we find that U.K. MNEs are less productive than U.S. affiliates, but as productive as non-U.S. foreign affiliates. Exploiting dynamic variation in our data, we find evidence suggesting that this additional U.S. advantage is due to the takeover of already highly productive U.K. plants rather than the sharing of superior firm-specific assets. The study also features a novel approach to TFP calculation.

On the Treatment of Foreigners and Foreign-owned Firms in the Cost-benefit Analysis of Transport Projects
2019
This paper addresses the issue of the treatment of foreigners and foreign-owned firms in the costbenefit analysis of transport projects. The distinction between the indirect utility function of national and non-national allows the consideration of some relevant cases. These are: the
common case of zero weights to foreign consumers, and foreign companies shipping their producer surpluses abroad; the case of local firms owned by foreigners; the altruist local household case; the consequence of fixed factors (for example, land) for the evaluation of foreign surpluses in
infrastructure investment; and the case of transnational projects with asymmetrical distribution of costs and benefits.

The empirical study defines typical investment behaviour of foreign-owned firms against local firms and highlights benefits and any discrepancies of foreign capital. The paper focuses on industrial enterprises in Slovakia mainly from the automotive, engineering and wood-processing industry (N = 164). Results show the significant dependence of foreign ownership and better business performance compared with domestic firms. The performance was expressed through ROE indicator. Enterprises with the foreign participation of property achieve better performance, most typically with ROE above 10% (p-value < 0.05). The better performance, as well as distinctive feature of intangibles and research & development investments, are typically in foreign-owned firms. Intangibles and R&D as crucial investments do not directly cause better business performance in foreign-owned firms, and we discuss the reasons. The research results offer relevant and interesting implications for managers behaviour, also public authorities as well as motives for further investigation of the business performance management and foreign direct investment issues.

The Evolution of the Foreign-Ownership Wage Premium in Poland
2022
The study examines the foreign-domestic wage differential in Poland during 2014-2017. The individual-level data come from ongoing surveys conducted by a major Polish HR consulting firm. The empirical analysis shows that during this period, there was a substantial (albeit decreasing) raw wage advantage for workers whom foreign-owned firms employed. This differential reduced significantly after controlling for personal, work, and workplace characteristics. Foreign firm employees at the lower end of the earnings distribution faced a smaller wage gap than those at the upper end; the wage gap showed a noticeable decline at all the percentiles over the years. Wage gap decompositions reveal that a predominant portion of the wage differential was due to differences in observed characteristics; nevertheless, a substantial portion of the wage gap remained unexplained.
