Pope Francis, Islam, and the Ethics of Recognition: Openings and Muslim Responses

2024
Through his numerous visits to the Muslim world, and by promoting an ethics of recognition of Islam, Pope Francis built trust and a religious encounter with various Muslim institutions. His dedication to global ethical concerns, such as human brotherhood, the environment, migration, and peace, has made religious leaders throughout the Middle East, particularly in Iraq, Egypt, and the Gulf states, favourable to interfaith co-operation with the Catholic Church for the common good. In particular, Pope Francis has influenced how justice and tolerance are perceived by many in the Muslim world, as evidenced by various Muslim responses to his messages. He was therefore effective in initiating an ethical encounter to overcome injustice and violence, in addition to re-establishing religious diplomacy and communication with Islam.

2024
The article discusses Pope Francis’s visit to Bahrain in 2022, which, although religiously and politically important, has not yet been exposed to science. This is the second visit of the head of the Catholic Church to the countries of the Persian Gulf, which is part of the refreshing interreligious dialogue between Christians and Muslims. This article analyzes changes in the Catholic Church’s understanding of dialogue with Islam, as illustrated by Pope Francis’s visit to Bahrain. Using comparative analysis, the article highlights the evolving nature of interreligious dialogue and its role in strengthening Muslim–Christian connections. The papal visit to Bahrain caused much controversy among human rights activists. Bahrain is seen, on one hand, as a tolerant and religiously inclusive country, but on the other, as a nation that frequently violates human rights, particularly in cases involving differences among its members. Pope Francis, as a diplomat, was not afraid to talk about some social issues in Bahrain (death penalty, discrimination, labor law) from the beginning of his visit. Pope Francis’s attitude and the benefits of interreligious dialogue that he has generated may not only confirm the presence of Christians in Bahrain but, above all, must change their destiny in the countries of the region that have so far treated this religion as an enemy. This article is an analysis of sources and their systematic review. The authors have focused on the interpretation of Pope Francis’s statements and their reception in the world. Interreligious and intercultural dialogue, as well as interpersonal fraternities, are extremely important in the international policy of the Holy See.

Meet Pope Francis. He is the first person from the Americas ever to be chosen to lead the Catholic Church. Despite his position in the world, Francis is a model of humility. He spreads an important message, encouraging everyone to help the less fortunate, protect the earth, and above all love one another.
Integral Ecology as a Call to Responsibility: Approximations Between Hans Jonas and Pope Francis
2025
This article aims to examine the concept of responsibility through the lens of the “integral ecology” proposed by Pope Francis in Laudato Si’. The objective is to demonstrate how the ethics of responsibility developed by Hans Jonas in his seminal 1979 work aligns with Pope Francis’s concerns and simultaneously offers a complementary theoretical–philosophical framework. To this end, we begin by showing how responsibility occupies a central place in the papal encyclical, assuming a multidimensional perspective. From there, we analyze how the understanding of responsibility transitions from ontology (Jonas) and anthropology (Francis) to ethics, taking the biosphere as a new object of responsibility in light of the threats posed by the unchecked advance of technological powers against nature. This investigation is based on a comparative and conceptual analysis of primary texts by Hans Jonas and Pope Francis. This shift also entails the recognition of nature’s intrinsic rights and an understanding of species extinction as both an impoverishment (Jonas) and a mutilation (Francis) of creation. We conclude by demonstrating how the call for integral ecology becomes an urgent task for the present generations in the context of catastrophe prevention. In this way, integral ecology attains its radical meaning when understood as demanding two fundamental transformations: a change in consciousness and a change in lifestyle—from consumerism to frugality.

Pope Francis originally intended this book to appear only after his death, but the needs of our times and the 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope have moved him to make this precious legacy available now. 'Hope' is the first autobiography in history ever to be published by a Pope. Written over six years, this complete autobiography starts in the early years of the twentieth century, with Pope Francis's Italian roots and his ancestors' courageous migration to Latin America, continuing through his childhood, the enthusiasms and preoccupations of his youth, his vocation, adult life, and the whole of his papacy up to the present day.
Pope Francis’s Communication Strategies During His Middle East Pilgrimages: An Analysis of Interreligious Discourse and Pontifical Diplomacy
This article examines the communication strategies of religious diplomacy used by Pope Francis in his diplomatic relations with the countries of the Middle East from 2013 to 2025. The study identifies and characterizes key elements of papal communication, taking into account both verbal and nonverbal dimensions, in the context of the complex geopolitical and religious situation of the region. Based on the analysis of official documents, speeches, foreign visits and diplomatic initiatives, specific communication patterns are identified that distinguish Francis’ pontificate from that of his predecessors. The research results indicate an innovative approach of the Pope, combining traditional Vatican diplomacy with direct personal engagement, the use of symbolism of gestures and the promotion of interreligious dialogue as a tool for building peace and intercultural understanding.

The Pope of the Rain: The Extraordinary Solitude in the Media
2024
The COVID-19 pandemic produced substantial and sudden changes in the reality of everyday life and in the collective construction of meaning. Questions arose: how should events occurring within an empty reality be broadcast? And, even before that, what structure is needed to make these events transmissible and interpretable, coping with the fact that they happen within a framework of lack of relationships and absolute silence? By analysing the worldwide live recording broadcast on 27 March 2020, commonly known as “the pope alone in Saint Peter’s Square during the pandemic”, this paper identifies a series of communicative solutions adopted by television. These range from making visible what should be hidden, to variously filling the emptiness by modifying the spatial colocation of the event, to an even more extreme solution, in which the emptiness remains as it is, and a rare semantic case occurs in which the sign coincides with its meaning. The latter is what I label the “pope of the rain” solution.
