The fluegelhorn music of David Sampson: A study of selected fluegelhorn works
Although the flügelhorn is common among trumpeters, the choice to use the instrument is often an artistic decision made by the performer as opposed to a compositional directive. At the end of the twentieth century however, one composer began to write frequently for the flügelhorn in both solo and chamber settings. Composer David Sampson, who is a trumpeter himself, has started a trend that should continue through his use of the flügelhorn as a solo voice unto itself. He has created a model by writing beautiful yet challenging music specifically for flügelhorn. This repertoire merits inclusion in trumpet studio repertoire. This paper attempts to bring to light two solo flügelhorn pieces of David Sampson: Passage for muted flügelhorn and viola, and Serenade for flügelhorn and string orchestra. Focusing on these compositions will provide insight on compositional style and performance techniques that may lead to future performances of these two pieces as well as Mr. Sampson's other flügelhorn works. KEYWORDS: David Sampson, Flügelhorn, Serenade, Passage, Trumpet
