Contemporary Francophone African Plays
Bringing together in English translation eleven Francophone African plays dating from 1970 to 2021, this essential collection includes satirical portraits of colonizers and their collaborators (Bernard Dadié's Béatrice du Congo; Sony Labou Tansi's I, Undersigned, Cardiac Case; Sénouvo Agbota Zinsou's We're Just Playing) alongside contemporary works questioning diasporic identity and cultural connections (Koffi Kwahulé's SAMO: A Tribute to Basquiat and Penda Diouf's Tracks, Trails, and Traces…). Le théâtre aristotélicien entre en crise peut-être plus tôt qu'on a coutume de le penser. À une époque de porosité des frontières génériques naît le théâtre des poètes qui, dès le romantisme, entame une mise à distance des caractéristiques du genre dramatique au profit de celles de la poésie lyrique : l'action tend à s'effacer derrière l'expression et le lyrisme, de par sa subjectivité, intériorise le drame. Ce théâtre des poètes du XIXe siècle, parfois plus à lire qu'à jouer, en arrive à délaisser le système de la mimesis, parce qu'il préfère, à la réalité objective et concrète, le domaine plus abstrait des idées. Cette subjectivité qu'importe la poésie dans le genre théâtral pousse finalement les dramaturges à braver le tabou absolu du théâtre aristotélicien, à savoir la présence du poète dans son oeuvre : la lyricisation du théâtre entraîne ainsi la manifestation du poète dans sa pièce. Nicolas Diassinous est agrégé de lettres modernes, docteur en langue et littérature françaises et spécialiste de théâtre. Ses recherches portent sur les questions d'intergénéricité, sur la métathéâtralité, ainsi que sur la réception de la dramaturgie classique au XIXe siècle.

postnationalist state and to elucidate the concerns of the francophone world. More
recent changes have introduced a transnational dimension, replacing concerns with
national and ethnic solidarity in favor of irony and self-reflexivity. New
Francophone African and Caribbean Theatres places these theatres at the heart of
contemporary debates on global cultural and political practices and offers a more
finely tuned understanding of performance in diverse diasporic networks.
