Peter Racine Fricker: Intrada Op 64/ Five Short Pieces Op 83/ Pastorale/ Toccata Gladius Domini Op 55/ Choral/Praeludium Op 60/ Trio/ Recitative, Impromptu and Procession Op 92/ Ricecare Op 40
2020
Today, both his name and his music are unknown to many musicians and music-lovers in this country, but his centenary, which falls this year, is as convenient a peg as any to justify a fresh look at his output of around 100 opus numbers, covering almost every genre of music (except opera), and it is on that basis that this new disc from Toccata may prove to be the start of rehabilitating the music of a genuine composer of rare quality. Yet, as we learned from our recent publication of a short study of Fricker's organ music by the artist on this new disc, Tom Winpenny - the listening experiences of audiences today cannot help but be more wide-ranging than when this music first appeared (between 1956 (Choral) and 1985 (Op 92)), and the result in this excellently produced disc is something of a revelation. Robert Matthew-Walker The English Organ Our last issue No 390 [November 2019January 2020] contained a feature by Will Fraser on The English Organ, a major recording project from Fugue State Films - now successfully released in a splendid boxed set on four DVDs and three CDs, including a full-colour 64-page book.
