Miss Manners: Guests at a charity dinner are not required to donate
Rich Friend 2 then told me that a guest at a charity dinner is expected to donate money, which makes me think she already knew that I had not donated on that occasion.I smiled again and said that I had not been her guest and truly feel it is my business (read: not your business) how much I donate to charity. Is Rich Friend 2 correct that an invited nonpaying guest to a charity event is expected to donate money at the event?
Twain's Roughing It In the World of Commerce
The tabloid title -- \"Ignorance, Confidence, and Filthy Rich Friends\" -- does not do justice to Mr. [Peter Krass]'s rather momentous point. Which is that literature was, for Twain, only a secondary goal. Mr. Krass maintains that the author's \"primary focus\" -- indeed, his \"primal drive\" (emanating from his father's bankruptcy) -- was to accumulate great wealth. By the early 1890s, [Samuel Clemens] had made a fortune from writing and then squandered it on a disastrous attempt to develop an automatic typesetting machine, as well as on Webster & Co., which goes bankrupt and leaves him saddled with debt. But he embarks on a year-long speaking tour and repays his creditors in full. He also entrusts his financial affairs to Henry Rogers, a shrewd financier and officer at Standard Oil. Clemens implores Rogers to get him in on \"the ground floor\" -- which is to say, before the general public -- in hot new stock issues, at the time a perfectly legitimate, though not exactly folksy, practice. Of the Morgan steel trust, Clemens writes exuberantly: \"I would rather have that stock than be free of sin.\" Thanks to Rogers, as well as to Clemens's growing royalties, the author rebuilds his fortune. Nor does Clemens try to disguise (except with wit) what money means to him. Of his involvement in an insurance start-up, he observed: \"Ever since I have been a director in an accident-insurance company I have felt that I am a better man. Life has seemed more precious.\" No less mocking was his opinion of communism, which he seemed to view as a scheme for entrusting the wealth of those with money and brains to those who had neither. \"Communism is idiotcy,\" he reckoned. \"They want to divide up the property. Suppose they did it -- it requires brains to keep money as well as make it. . . . The division would have to be re-made every three years or it would do the communist no good.\"
Collagen and platelet-rich plasma in partial-thickness rotator cuff injuries. Friends or only indifferent neighbours? Randomised controlled trial
Background Partial-thickness rotator cuff injuries (PTRCI) are the sum of degenerative, overload, and microtrauma processes. An external supply of collagen and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) could potentially counteract the deterioration of degenerative tendinopathy. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of collagen with PRP, PRP alone, and collagen alone in the treatment of PTRCI. Methods Ninety patients with PTRCI were randomised and treated with ultrasound-guided injections into the shoulder bursa every consecutive week: Group A – collagen with PRP ( n  = 30), Group B – collagen alone ( n  = 30), and Group C – PRP alone ( n  = 30). Primary outcomes were pain intensity measured in control points on a numeric rating scale (NRS), QuickDash, and EQ-5D-5L questionnaires at the initial assessment (IA) and control assessments after 6 (T1), 12 (T2), and 24 (T3) weeks, respectively. Results No statistical differences were found between groups in primary outcomes, although there was a trend towards improvement in Groups A and C (opposite to Group B) between T2 and T3. The following parameters were also observed: rotator cuff discontinuity ( n  = 3, one case in each group) and rotator cuff regeneration ( n  = 22 in Group A, n  = 20 in Group B, and n  = 23 in Group C). Conclusions Combined therapy of collagen and PRP in PTRCI presents similar effectiveness to monotherapies with collagen or PRP. Trial registration The study was prospectively registered on the NCT Trial Center (identification number: NCT04492748 ) on 30.07.2020.

Up to 250 tech center jobs bound for Lewiston
Customers call them on edge, worried that they've lost business files, wedding photos or thesis papers. \"They are in high-tension mode, I would say,\" [David Friend] said. With a positive experience on the phone, and a tech that can reach their data, \"we turn a nervous person into an evangelist.\" Rich Surace, Carbonite's vice president of services, said average pay for the full-time jobs would be $35,000, including benefits, with a range of $45,000 to $50,000 for managers. The center will be open from 9 a.m. to midnight seven days a week. Surace said he's looking for people with Mac and PC skills and associate and bachelor's degrees. \"It's also a testament to the strong effort this area has made historically over the years (in attracting higher education),\" [Ed Barrett] said. \"That investment, which was a long-term effort on the part of lots of people, put us in the position where we could be attractive to a company like this.\"

Ruth Foster praised
Rich Hewitt's excellent photo of Gov. Angus King, Cooper Friend and [Ruth Foster] (BDN, April 28-29) perhaps has more significance than the well-deserved \"Top Drawer Award\" to Friend. Over a period of quite a few years, I've gone to Ruth Foster's children's shop in Ellsworth to find gifts for birthdays and other special occasions.
People learn true value of treasures
Mullins and his son, [Stephen Mullins], were participating in their second \"Antiques Side Show,\" a Sandy Sowell take-off on the popular PBS program, \"Antiques Roadshow.\" Like Sowell's popular karaoke, game shows and horse races, the Antiques Side Show helps after-dinner audiences have fun while learning something new. [Margo Friend] said that has public grants and private money begin to dry up, fundraisers such as Sowell's Antiques Side Show grow more important.
