To see if variations in timing of rapamycin (Rapa), administered to middle aged mice starting at 20 months, would lead to different survival outcomes, we compared three dosing regimens. Initiation of Rapa at 42 ppm increased survival significantly in both male and female mice. Exposure to Rapa for a 3‐month period led to significant longevity benefit in males only. Protocols in which each month of Rapa treatment was followed by a month without Rapa exposure were also effective in both sexes, though this approach was less effective than continuous exposure in female mice. Interpretation of these results is made more complicated by unanticipated variation in patterns of weight gain, prior to the initiation of the Rapa treatment, presumably due to the use of drug‐free food from two different suppliers. The experimental design included tests of four other drugs, minocycline, β‐guanidinopropionic acid, MitoQ, and 17‐dimethylaminoethylamino‐17‐demethoxygeldanamycin (17‐DMAG), but none of these led to a change in survival in either sex. Intermittent (1 month on/1 month off) or a limited 3‐month exposure to rapamycin, beginning at 20 months, was as effective as continuous exposure in increasing survival in males. In females, only intermittent exposure increased survival but the increase was not as great as continuous exposure.

Building Grit: The Longitudinal Pathways between Mindset, Commitment, Grit, and Academic Outcomes

Despite academics’ enthusiasm about the concept of grit (defined as consistency of interest and perseverance of effort), its benefit for academic achievement has recently been challenged. Drawing from a longitudinal sample (
N
= 2018; 55.3% female; sixth–nineth grades) from Finland, this study first aimed to investigate and replicate the association between grit and achievement outcomes (i.e., academic achievement and engagement). Further, the present study examined whether growth mindset and goal commitment impacted grit and whether grit acted as a mediator between growth mindset, goal commitment, and achievement outcomes. The results showed that the perseverance facet of grit in the eighth grade was associated with school achievement and engagement in the nineth grade, after controlling for students’ conscientiousness, academic persistence, prior achievement and engagement, gender and SES, although the effect on engagement was stronger than on achievement. In addition, grit was predicted by goal commitment in the sixth grade, but not by the growth mindset in the sixth grade. Finally, the perseverance of effort (not the consistency of interest) mediated the effect of goal commitment on engagement. These findings suggest that grit is associated with increased engagement and academic achievement; and practitioners who wish to improve grit of adolescents may encourage goal commitment more than growth mindset.

Microstructure and nanomechanical properties of foreleg surface of the praying mantis (Mantis religiosa Linnaeus)

Detailed investigations on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the surface of the praying mantis’ foreleg were carried out in this work since the microstructure and mechanical properties of insect organisms surface are well adjusted to their functions. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the surface microstructures of the tibia and femur were composed of squamous fibre and the spine surfaces on these two parts are arris. A nanoindenter was used to investigate the mechanical properties of the praying mantis's foreleg, including the mean Young's modulus and hardness of the femur cuticle, tibia cuticle and the apical claw. The test results on these parts were E = 5.533 GPa, H = 0.239 GPa, E = 3.471 GPa, H = 0.186 GPa, E = 2.232 GPa, H = 0.449 GPa, respectively. The variation of mechanical properties agreed with the analysis of microstructure.

Effect of caffeine consumption on the academic performance among students of University of Kalamoon (UOK)

Introduction: Caffeine is the most commonly used psychoactive substance throughout the world. It is found in coffee, tea, and chocolate, as it is produced naturally in the beans and leaves of the plants used to manufacture these products. Caffeine is often used for its benefits, which include increased vigilance. It does have side-effects, however, such as palpitations and withdrawal symptoms that include headache. Objective: This study aimed to determine the frequency of caffeine consumption and its effect on academic performance among students of the University of Kalamoon (UOK). Methodology: The study was conducted 550 undergraduate students from first to final year. Results: About 51.6% were females, 84.2% of the students scored less than 3 Grade Point Average (GPA). Majority of the students (98.9%) consume caffeine in any form such as an international Coffee’s trademark (72.9%), tea and coffee. About 64.4% of the students consume caffeine at morning. About 51.3% of the students reported sleeplessness as a side effect and 32.9% of them reported headache as a withdrawal symptom. High proportions of the students were found to be consuming caffeine due to the misconception that caffeine (75.5%) increase their academic performance. Conclusions: This study found no significant association between academic performance and caffeine consumption. Introducción: La cafeína es la sustancia psicoactiva más consumida en todo el mundo. Se encuentra en el café, el té y el chocolate, ya que se produce de forma natural en los granos y hojas de las plantas utilizadas para elaborar estos productos. La cafeína se utiliza a menudo por sus beneficios, que incluyen una mayor lucidez mental. Sin embargo, presenta efectos secundarios, como palpitaciones y síntomas de abstinencia, como dolor de cabeza. Objetivo: Este estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar la frecuencia del consumo de cafeína y su efecto en el rendimiento académico de los estudiantes de la Universidad de Kalamoon (UOK). Metodología: El estudio se realizó con 550 estudiantes de pregrado, desde el primero hasta el último año. Resultados: El 51,6 % eran mujeres y el 84,2 % de los estudiantes obtuvo un promedio de calificaciones (GPA) inferior a 3. Site-Specific Glycan Microheterogeneity Evaluation of Aflibercept Fusion Protein by Glycopeptide-Based LC-MSMS Mapping

The evaluation of the protein glycosylation states of samples of aflibercept obtained from three different regions was conducted by site-specific N-linked glycan microheterogeneity profiling. Glycopeptide-based nano-LC MSMS mapping of tryptic-digested samples of each aflibercept lot provided site-specific information about glycan microheterogeneity on each of the five N-glycosylation sites (two sites in the VEGFR-1 region, two sites in the VEGFR-2 region, and one site in the human IgG Fc region). Next, the glycopeptide-mapping results obtained from the three different aflibercept lots were compared to evaluate the similarity between the samples. Three aflibercept lots showed a high degree of similarity in glycan composition, fucosylation level, sialylation level, and branching, when all five N-glycosylation sites were assessed together as a group. On the other hand, noticeable variations between lots in the glycan types and sialylation levels on the two sites of the VEGFR-2 domain were observed when each of the five N-glycosylation sites were assessed using the glycopeptide-based method. The presence of N-glycolylneuraminic acid (NeuGc) glycans, which may mediate adverse immune reactions in antibody therapeutics, were also detected on the sites of VEGFR1 and VEGFR2 domains, but not on the IgG Fc domain site. These results imply that analyses of the glycosylation profiles of fusion proteins containing multiple N-glycosylation sites, such as aflibercept, being done as a part of quality control for the therapeutics manufacturing process or for biosimilar development, can be done with a more applicable outcome by assessing each site separately.

Laryngotracheal granulomatous inflammation is a clinical entity that may complicate either localized or systemic disorders. It can result in life-threatening airway compromise, requiring urgent medical or surgical intervention. We report the case of a patient presenting with recurrent tracheal stenosis secondary to anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis, refractory to conventional treatments. Despite multiple endoscopic dilatations and surgical resection of tracheal rings, disease control remained suboptimal. Introduction of sirolimus led to a sustained improvement of the stenotic lesion, as demonstrated by clinical and instrumental assessment. Sirolimus may be considered a valuable therapeutic option for severe subglottic inflammatory manifestations in ANCA-associated vasculitis.

Prevalence and correlates of food insecurity among U.S. college students: a multi-institutional study

Background
College students may be vulnerable to food insecurity due to limited financial resources, decreased buying power of federal aid, and rising costs of tuition, housing, and food. This study assessed the prevalence of food insecurity and its sociodemographic, health, academic, and food pantry correlates among first-year college students in the United States.
Methods
A cross-sectional study was conducted among first-year students (
n
= 855) across eight U.S. universities. Food security status was assessed using the U.S. Department of Agriculture Adult Food Security Survey Module. Cohen’s Perceived Stress Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Eating Attitudes Test-26 were used to assess perceived stress, sleep quality, and disordered eating behaviors, respectively. Participants self-reported their grade point average (GPA) and completed questions related to meal plan enrollment and utilization of on-campus food pantries.
Results
Of participating students, 19% were food-insecure, and an additional 25.3% were at risk of food insecurity. Students who identified as a racial minority, lived off-campus, received a Pell grant, reported a parental education of high school or less, and did not participate in a meal plan were more likely to be food-insecure. Multivariate logistic regression models adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics and meal plan enrollment indicated that food-insecure students had significantly higher odds of poor sleep quality (OR = 2.32, 95% CI: 1.43–3.76), high stress (OR = 4.65, 95% CI: 2.66–8.11), disordered eating behaviors (OR = 2.49, 95% CI: 1.20–4.90), and a GPA < 3.0 (OR = 1.91, 95% CI: 1.19–3.07) compared to food-secure students. Finally, while half of the students (56.4%) with an on-campus pantry were aware of its existence, only 22.2% of food-insecure students endorsed utilizing the pantry for food acquisition.
Conclusions
Food insecurity among first-year college students is highly prevalent and has implications for academic performance and health outcomes. Higher education institutions should screen for food insecurity and implement policy and programmatic initiatives to promote a healthier college experience. Campus food pantries may be useful as short-term relief; however, its limited use by students suggest the need for additional solutions with a rights-based approach to food insecurity.

Media multitasking is associated with distractibility and increased prefrontal activity in adolescents and young adults

The current generation of young people indulges in more media multitasking behavior (e.g., instant messaging while watching videos) in their everyday lives than older generations. Concerns have been raised about how this might affect their attentional functioning, as previous studies have indicated that extensive media multitasking in everyday life may be associated with decreased attentional control. In the current study, 149 adolescents and young adults (aged 13–24years) performed speech-listening and reading tasks that required maintaining attention in the presence of distractor stimuli in the other modality or dividing attention between two concurrent tasks. Brain activity during task performance was measured using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We studied the relationship between self-reported daily media multitasking (MMT), task performance and brain activity during task performance. The results showed that in the presence of distractor stimuli, a higher MMT score was associated with worse performance and increased brain activity in right prefrontal regions. The level of performance during divided attention did not depend on MMT. This suggests that daily media multitasking is associated with behavioral distractibility and increased recruitment of brain areas involved in attentional and inhibitory control, and that media multitasking in everyday life does not translate to performance benefits in multitasking in laboratory settings.

Background
Lung cancer is the most frequent source of brain metastases (BMs), with 20-40% of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) developing BMs during the course of disease. The NSCLC-GPA (Graded Prognostic Assessment), developed by Sperduto et al., aims to estimate overall survival (OS) in lung cancer patients with BMs based on multiple prognostic factors. This study aimed to validate the applicability and prognostic relevance of the updated 2022 NSCLC-GPA in a German clinical cohort, with particular attention to programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression and treatment-related outcomes.
Methods
We retrospectively analyzed patients with NSCLC and BMs treated between 2020 and 2022 at a German university hospital. GPA scores were calculated using established parameters: age, Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS), number of BMs, presence of extracranial metastases (ECM), EGFR and ALK mutation status, and PD-L1 expression. Due to the low number of non-adenocarcinoma (NAC) cases in our cohort, only patients with adenocarcinoma (AC) were included. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression models, log-rank tests, and Kaplan–Meier curves for illustrative purposes were used to evaluate associations between prognostic factors and OS.
Results
A total of 110 AC patients met the inclusion criteria. Median OS was 10 months (range: 6-11). Patients with GPA scores of 0-1 and 1.5-2 had significantly worse outcomes compared with the reference group (GPA 3.5-4; median OS: 36 months), with median OS times of 3 and 8 months, respectively (HR: 8.34, 95% CI: 2.53-27.5,
p
= 0.0005 and HR: 5.24, 95% CI: 1.584-17.33,
p
= 0.0067). Patients with a GPA of 2.5-3 had a median OS of 22.5 months (HR: 1.6, 95% CI: 0.469-5.45,

= 0.0047), low KPS (KPS ≤ 70; HR: 3.88, 95% CI: 2.33-6.46,

< 0.0001) were all significantly associated with decreased OS. In the multivariate analysis, low KPS and ECM remained independently significant prognostic factors. PD-L1 expression showed no significant association with OS.
Conclusion
Despite shorter OS outcomes in our cohort, the 2022 NSCLC-GPA proved to be a valuable prognostic tool, with lower scores consistently associated with poorer outcomes. In addition, older age, low KPS, ECM, and a higher number of BMs were identified as prognostic factors, with low KPS and ECM remaining independent prognostic factors in the multivariate analysis.

Academic procrastination and academic performance: Do learning disabilities matter?

The growing number of students with learning disabilities (LD) in higher education increases the need to understand and address the factors that affect their academic performance. One of these factors is academic procrastination, which affects over 70% of college students, including students with LD. The present study examined the relationship between academic procrastination and academic performance, and the moderating role of LD in this relationship. Findings showed a negative effect of academic procrastination on GPA, and more strongly for students with LD, indicating that a high-level of procrastination might be more harmful for these students’ academic performance. These initial findings contribute to the body of knowledge concerning students with LD in higher education. They emphasize the need to support students with LD in a manner that will address the specific difficulties that may lead to higher rates of procrastination and subsequently lower academic achievement.
