El presente estudio se concentra sobre la caracterización de la vejez en la Tercera parte de El Criticón(1657) de Baltasar Gracián a partir de un estudio de cinco figuras que nos parecen constituir rasgos originales de esta última obra del jesuita. A partir de un estudio de las dualidades, del uso de la palabra diphtongo, de la angustia de descomposición, de la alegoría doble y reversible de la muerte y, por fin, de la misteriosa Isla de la Inmortalidad, se confirma el carácter vivaz y creativo de la escritura de Gracián.

RESUMEN: Este trabajo presenta en primer lugar una descripción detallada del autógrafo de El Héroe de Baltasar Grácián que da explicación a algunas de sus peculiaridades formales. Por otro lado, en la estela de los trabajos de Adolphe Coster y Miguel Romera-Navarro, ofrece un novedoso aparato genético del tratado, que pretende analizar los mecanismos creativos del autor.

The aim of Gracián’s Agudeza y arte de ingenio (Sharp-mindedness and the Art of Wit) was to write a treatise explaining all the different types of conceits. Being aware that concepto is a multi-purpose word, Gracián proceded to make additional definitions and distinctions, outlining some categories and subcategories of conceits, and establishing different possibilities of combination between them. His theory, based on an inductive procedure, raises some objections: 1) it is difficult to find the rules governing the faculty of wit, the technique of arte de ingenio; 2) the idea of conceit based on the relationship of similarity does not take into account the fact that many witty correspondences are devoid of literary quality; 3) the practice of conceit barely explains the most important achievements and innovations made by the great Baroque poets, at least in Spain, despite their reputation for the bold use of conceptos. In spite of those shortcomings, Agudeza y arte de ingenio deserves credit for its theoretical ambition and for Gracian’s effort to renovate the literary and gnoseological thought of his time.

El artículo comienza con una breve contextualización histórica sobre la práctica y la dimensión que la tauromaquia adquirió en la España de Gracián, subrayando las concomitancias profundas entre las formas y valores del Barroco y las que caracterizan el mundo taurino (la tauromaquia a caballo de la época, pero también –lo que es todavía más significativo- la tauromaquia moderna a pie que vendría después). A continuación el artículo se centra en la obra de Gracián señalando y valorando en ella no solo las alusiones taurinas directas, sino también -y sobre todo- las asombrosas afinidades que con la tauromaquia presenta el universo graciano en su terminología y conceptualización características, así como en sus estrategias de actuación social.

The work of Baltasar Gracián, one of the great writers of the Spanish Golden Age, has been interesting for philolo¬gists, moral philosophers and political theorists but it has hardly been relevant for economists. This paper explores the writings of this great author of the baroque period in order to emphasize the analysis of human nature derived from his work. Gracián suggested a very similar notion to that used by other Spanish contemporaries: one which possessed a great number of the qualities of the homo oeconomicus, an abstract conception of the human being which most of the economists will subsequently embrace.

Presentación del monográfico sobre Baltasar Gracián y su contexto europeo.

Este trabajo se centra en la recepción de Baltasar Gracián en el pensamiento nietzscheano y, más concretamente, en la caracterización que el filósofo de Röcken hizo del jesuita aragonés como cristiano escéptico. En la primera parte se desarrolla un bosquejo de la capital huella que el Siglo de Oro dejó en el pesamiento nietzscheano. En la segunda, nos concentraremos en repasar la herencia formal y estilística que la lectura del Oráculo manual de Gracián, en traducción de Schopenhauer, que puede apreciarse en las obras del periodo positivista nietzscheano. Finalmente, la última parte del trabajo se aborda la estrecha relación existente entre la interpretación nietzscheana de Gracián como escéptico y la configuración de conceptos esenciales de la filosofía nietzscheana de la mañana como los de ciencia jovial y espíritu libre.
